Now that both the BJP and Congress Manifestoes have been made public the public debate can shift from personalities to issues.
It is clear that elections 2009 will not see a definitive fault-line along straight-jacket political ideologies typical of Western Democracies.
But then it is a curious year to be complaining about it for the Global Economic Meltdown has rendered these straight-jacket labels largely irrelevant with the trillion dollar bailouts.
So how must we bring sanity to this Manifesto Madness debate within the Indian context ?
We can do so by first recognizing the present day political reality.
What we have in India are essentially Center Left leaning and Center Right leaning “Minority Coalitions”.
Compounding this reality is the fact that these “Minority Coalitions” have to make further “pportunistic compromises” to close the gap to the half-way mark which gets them a simple majority.
Hence to judge these Minority Manifestoes on the basis of hard ideological definitions is foolish.
Instead we must judge them on the basis of the cost at which they will make opportunistic compromises and on the basis of that which will not be compromised.
More detailed analysis is bound to follow over the days to come from experts on the financial implications and the relative merits of the two manifestoes, it is clear that there is a fundamental difference between the Congress and the BJP’s approach.
Where the Congress seeks to tax and spend, the BJP has clearly staked itself for a low tax regime.
On entitlements too one can see subtle differences like when the BJP promises 35kgs of subsidised rice or wheat at Rs 2 for BPL Families it is not doing so at the expense of an enlarged and flawed Public Distribution System but by making a beginning on Direct Delivery of Entitlements via Food Coupons that will be redeemable at both PDS and Private Outlet.
Similarly Bicycle handout program is tied to Girl Child School Enrollment.
On education while promising entitlements at the primary and secondary level, the BJP has also subtly differentiated itself on the the question of full autonomy to Institutions of Higher Education with an emphasis on the Private Sector.
Freedom and Autonomy make a come back again on the question of Science and Technology Research by Academic and Research Organizations and on the question of Financial Autonomy to Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies.
In closing if there is one proposal that stands out in the BJP Manifesto it is the proposal to free Hindu Religious bodies from Government Control.
It is a travesty of Indian Democracy that an avowedly Secular State has resorted to Constitutional Ammendments to ensure Government control of Religious bodies like the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam.
From Sabarimalai to Tamil New Year, there have been numerous instances of the tyranny of State Control on the functioning of Hindu Temples and Religious bodies.
By promising to revert control to the stakeholders of these Institutions amongst the devotees and local communities, the BJP proposal will uphold true secularism and religious freedom.
This proposal could also provide a framework for resolving contentious issues like Ram Janmabhoomi and Amarnath.
As coalition politics continues to make party manifestoes largely inconsequential it will be important to see how the NDA’s National Agenda for Governance and Vision for the Country will reflect the Centre-Right leaning proposals in the BJP Manifesto and go beyond them on the question of Economic Reforms, Privatization and Disinvestment.

Drummasala,
Thanks for the link of media bias,
man it is so good to see that lot of people getting realized about the tamasha of NDTV,IBN and TIIMES NOW.
Advaniji is talking of miracle in Bihar, MP, Chattisgarh and Maharashtra.
Arjun where is the link to Advaniji’s comments?
http://www.dailypioneer.com/167664/NDA-has-left-its-rivals-far-behind-Advani.html
Senior BJP leader LK Advani said here on Sunday that given the tremendous response his party was receiving in its electioneering, he foresaw an electoral ‘miracle’ in the States of Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh and “good results” in favour of his party elsewhere in the country.
“Our rivals are trailing far behind us. We can expect good results in the polls,” the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate said, as he along with Shiv Sena’s executive president Uddhav Thackeray launched the saffron alliance’s campaign in Mumbai at a huge public rally at Shivaji Park here.
what is this on ndtv – Nitish kumar dithering – am with NDA 2day ; do not know about 2morow.
looks like he may follow thw Laloo road
Nitish might go with Congress post elections. There were reports of Congress trying to rope him as an ally.
Natish is not fully committed to NDA, but he cannot leave NDA also. He cannot do like Naveen Patnaik for the simple reason that in Orissa, oposition congress is weak and Naveen could take risk to ditch BJP. But it is not the case in Bihar. Lalu is still strong with 30+% vote. Without BJP support Natish cannot keep his CM post.
Also, BJP has 55 seats in Bihar and Congress has 9 seats. If Nitish does that he will be giving away Bihar on a platter to Laloo. It is all damn lies by NDTV to misguide public.
Nitish is not dithering. He will stay firmly with NDA .He is a man of honour. He will not forget how Manmohan , sonia and Lalu ganged up and blocked him from becoming CM by invoking(unconstitutional) governer’s rule. And at that crucial juncture only NDA supported him firmly.
As for NDTV interview Barkha was doing congress’s work by repeatedly asking, pushing and when he is finally said “as of now Iam with NDA”,she herself intrepretd it as “anything can happen tommorow”,Which is ridiculous.Barkha and NDTV are not practicing journalism ,but shameless political propoganda.Barkha’s place in this world is right beside Kapilsibal ,abhishek singhvi,Manish Tiwari and jayanthy natarajan as another congress spoksperson.

Modiji”s interview
UPA strange, Dilli mein dosti, gaon mein kushti: Narendra Modi
How is this election different from previous ones?
This is the first time in electoral history that both Congress and BJP have announced their prime ministerial candidates. It is a good trend.
Who will form the next government at the Centre?
BJP as well as allies will win more seats than last time.
Why do you feel so?
Because this country has remained leader-less for the past five years. Ask any Congressmen who is their leader, nobody names Manmohan Singh. When the party does not accept Singh as a leader, why would the country? When BJP announced LK Advani as PM candidate, all NDA allies backed him. Whereas UPA leaders be it Lalu Prasad or Sharad Pawar aspire to become PM. Their alliance is strange: Delhi mein dosti, gaon mein kushti (They are friends in Delhi and fight in the states). Voters are smart enough to understand why they are doing this.
How many seats will the UPA get?
Congress score will not reach double digits. They will get less than 100 seats. UPA’s allies have offered Congress just nine seats in Bihar, UP and Jharkhand. Need I say more?
Do parties have an election issue?
The main issue is: Does this country need politics of votebanks anymore . People of Gujarat have already rejected it and have opted for development politics. The rest of the country, especially the youth, also think on similar lines. UPA government’s failure in tackling terrorism and their wrong economic policies will be major issues. The country’s future lies in a strong leadership, which NDA can provide. The battle this time is between Congress parivarwaad (nepotism), Third Front’s takwaad (opportunism) and BJP’s rashtrawaad (nationalism). Let us see who wins.
Which will be a bigger issue, security or economy?
Both. People have lost faith in UPA as far as tackling terrorism goes. Taliban is wreaking havoc in Pakistan. The stretch between Pashupati (Nepal) to Tirupati has become a Red corridor for terror. Bangladesh has become the new breeding ground for terrorists. On the economic front, UPA has goofed up with its policies.
After Advani, you have also raised the black money issue?
This is not an election issue. Advaniji had written to the PM in this regard last year. But nothing moved. At the agenda meeting for G-20 summit held a few months back, the issue was raised again. But, it seems something is stopping the Congress from taking this issue up with the Swiss banks. Estimates suggest more than Rs 25 lakh crore belonging to Indians is lying in Swiss banks. We have a right to know the details and this is the right time. When we have an opportunity, why let it go?
The Modi magic hasn’t surfaced this time?
(Laughs). Good performance is the only magic that works. People don’t vote for BJP because of my speeches. They do so because of the hard work and results shown by our government over the last seven years.
Now that you are BJP’s campaign in-charge for the entire western region, are you looking at a bigger role in national politics?
I don’t think that way. I was given this additional responsibility because I have toured these areas extensively. Pramod Mahajan’s death has left a vacuum in Maharashtra. Moreover, most senior leaders are fighting elections themselves.
What is more important in candidate selection: winnability or clean image?
In today’s world, clean politics is a relative term.
But, why has BJP fielded tainted candidates in Gujarat?
The ones you are calling tainted have been acquitted by court. One must respect the judiciary. You cannot call them tainted.
BJP has also fielded a number of Congress turncoats in the state. Don’t you have good candidates?
It is not that. If a sitting MLA joins BJP, it is our achievement.
Home Minister Chidambaram’s dubious actions. We need clarification from him. Will he answer?

That article On nostradamus predictions etc from Francois Gautier was amongst the most nonsensical I have read in recent times.Whatever happened to the guy- normally he writes much more logically than this!
India TV poll seems promising. If the BJP can pull ahead of the COngress by a few more seats and make it around 150:130 or 155:125, it will be advantage NDA post poll.
Btw, what’s happening in Haryana?. Almost all polls unanimously predict only 1-2 seats for BJP-INLD and 8 for Congress. Even without INLD, BJP won 1 seat last time- I was hoping the alliance would get atleast 5-6 seats.
In A.P,from recent surveys, it seems PRP is dividing anti-Congress vote and looks like the Congress may still get around 20 seats. if that tally drops further, Congress may land up with around 120 seats and have no chance of forming the next govt.
http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=BJP+to+contest+11+seats+in+Tamil+Nadu&artid=JWCPVUpI4fs=&SectionID=vBlkz7JCFvA=&MainSectionID=fyV9T2jIa4A=&SectionName=EL7znOtxBM3qzgMyXZKtxw==&SEO=Lok+Sabha+elections
BJP to contest 11 seats in Tamil Nadu.
Even including allies, it only comes to 19 seats, half the total number of seats in the state.
Very strange if this is the final list of constituency they are going to contest in T.N… Even in the 2006 assembly polls, they contested practically all seats- so it makes no sense to me not to do the same for L.S polls.

Modi mania shocks Naveen, Pyari
Bhubaneswar (Orissa):BJD chief Naveen Patnaik and his advisor Pyari Mohan Mohapatra are now in back foot following Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s starling revelation against the regional out’s Big Boss.
Sources said on Monday that Naveen had sought a report on Modi visit but he shocked after reading saffron surge in Orissa.
While Pyari said Modi mania could only work in Gujarat not in Orissa but sources said that BJP Rajya Sabha MP’s remark came out of frustration.
Modi, who addressed a huge public meeting at exhibition ground here, termed Naveen as a very weak Chief Minister, who even failed to protect the image of the State in national level.
The senior BJP leader also claimed that Swami Laxmananda Saraswati’s atama haunting Naveen. Therefore, the BJD chief is committing mistakes one after another.
Accusing Patnaik Government of not taking action against Swamiji’s killers, Modi said the Santh’s atma could be forcing Patnaik to commit mistakes. This disgusted soul would finish Naveen Patnaik and his Government, Modi predicted. “Still there is time for Naveen, he should book the killers and get blessings of Swamiji”, BJP’s star campaigner said.
Alleging that Patnaik too indulge in “Vote Bank Politics” the Gujarat Chief Minister said killers were not arrested to appease a particular community.
Modi who was scheduled to address a meeting at Raikia, how ever could not go to Kandhamal due to technical snag in his aircraft. He promised that he would certainly visit Kandhamal and demand arrest of killers.
The BJP’s Hindutwa Mascot explained that his failure to attend Kandhamal meeting should not be interpreted otherwise. “ Maut ko darne walon se hum nehin hein, maut ko haath mein leke ghoomtein hein”, he said.
guys,
I am trying to guage if the incessant media baiting is affecting how the readers view the BJP. IN this context I was reading some comments to Jayanti Natarajans’ blog in IBN Live. The whole blog had a majority of negative comments and an article on Modi had only positive comments and on the ratings Modia has over 350k positive votes and about 20k negative votes. this is incredible. One comment from a blogger on Jayanti Natarajan’s blog, i could not resist reprodicing below, it is hilarious.
Brilliant piece, Ms. Natarajan.
You’ve shown there is no dearth of good fiction writers in the country. A career beckons ma’am. We are really bored of Shobha De and ilk churning out the same stuff time and again. It’s time for you to rise to the call. Punjabi Kesari apparently wants good writers for some interesting ghost stories.
Last, your piece so reminds me of a famous song that goes something like this….
Tauba tera jalwa, tauba tera pyaaaar, tera ee-mo-ssional atyaachaar
What happened to yoss. no tweets for last 48 hrs as well. is he fine or busy with some volunteer work.
This is off the topic but still important. When the Congress is in alliance with Muslim League, the NDF (now in a new name but a rabid communal organization ) pledging support to them, the CPM sharing platform with Abdul Nazar Madhani of PDP all in the name of Secularism it is time people are aware of the type of secularism these outfits are practicing.
In Kerala no opportunity is spared by the so called patent holders of secularism to bring the name of Narendra Modi and ow Kandhamal. But they never utter a word about the plight of Kashmiri hindus or any atrocities on any hindus. These secular and MSM suppress any atrocities, riots against hindus but go overboard if the victims are minorities. There seem to be secret agenda. Why no so called seculars are silent on the atrocities against hindus. The following link shows that nobody is bothered about the plight of hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh. http://www.weeklyblitz.net/index.php?id=547
