India Elections 2009 – Open Letter to Rahul Gandhi

Dear Rahul Gandhi

I am writing to you because Times of India has this report from PTI that you will always take care of me.

Now that you have promised to the whole nation that you will take care of me, I thought it was important for you to know me close and personal for you dont seem to know very much.

Let me begin with your assurance that the UPA Government was a Government of the “poor people” and “aam admi”.

Did you know that back in 2004 you said the same thing that the UPA Government would be a government for the “poor people” ?

Well even if you didnt I am happy that you kept your promise.

Because of your promise State Governments across the country took good care of us poor people.

They took such good care of us poor people that between 2004 and 2008

#1 The proportion of BPL population fell to 26% from 28% at the national level

#2  poverty decreased across all states barring Uttarakhand

#3 poverty has declined in 380 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies

So I am little confused when you say the UPA Government in 2009 will be a Government of the poor because guess what there are many of us who are no longer poor !

#1 Does that mean that if in 2004 you were for us, now in 2009 you are against us ?

#2 Does that mean you will take care of us only if we remain poor and you will abandon when we no longer remain poor ?

#3 Does that mean we are “common masses” as long as we remain poor and you will treat as uncommon exceptions when we are no longer BPL ?

#4 Does that mean if in 2004 when you came to our village found that we didnt understand “India Shining”, we should remain ignorant that way for 5 years and still not understand it in 2009 ?

#5 Does that mean India should never shine for us even if we manage to improve our standard of living ?

You may not have all the answers for these but I think I do.

When the rest of us in those 385 Lok Sabha constituencies managed to reduce poverty, in your own pocket borough of Rae Barelli poverty increased.

I now understand your duplicity better.

#1 When you say you are for the poor in 2004 and in 2009 what you really mean is you are for the poor staying poor election after election ?

#2 When you say you will take care of the aam admi in 2004 and in 2009 what you really mean is you want the aam admi to continue to be helpless and dependent election after election ?

#3 When you say you are a Government for the common masses in both 2004 and 2009 what you really mean is you want us to remain faceless underachievers ?

#4 When you say in 2004 and in 2009 that we didnt understand India Shining, what you really mean is you want us to remain ignorant and never understand what “India Shining means” ?

#5 When you say in 2004 and in 2009 that anyone who talks of India Shining is talking for the rich, what you really mean is you never want us to aspire to become rich and you never want India to Shine for us ?

I can see how well you have done this in Rae Barelli and Amethi and I can also how well your comrades-in-arms the CPI-Mafioso has done this in West Bengal where after decades for claiming to be pro-poor the Government has actually accomplished by keeping the people of Bengal poor and by increasing their numbers so there are more poor to celebrate the triumph of Social Justice.

You made this claim today that

Congress president Sonia Ganhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and myself will not let down common man and will leave no stone unturned in removing poverty

but how can I believe you when you are coming back to me in 2009 with the same attitude you had in 2004.

Here I am in 2009, I am no longer below the poverty line, I am hungry for knowledge and learning, I am hungry for opportunities.

But I see that you dont have a new message for me.

I see that you want me to feel guilty that I am now above the poverty line.

I see that you want my fellow poor to look upon me as rich and anyone who wants myy vote as being there enemy.

You claim the opposition is practising divisive politics, but I see here that you are practising the same divisive politics by making my fellow poor feel victims of my success and by making me feel guilty about that.

I see that you are practising the same divisive politics by making an enemy of the poor anyone who wants to talk about how India can shine for me with new skills, knowledge and opportunities.

But what hurts the most is when you claim to take care of me as an aam admi when you were nowhere to be seen when Terrorists struck in Varnasi, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Malegaon, Samjhauta Express, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Guwahati and again in Mumbai on 26th November 2008.

When my kith and kin aam admi who were both poor and common died in these incidents you did nothing to take care of us and you now come back in 2009 to talk about something that happened in 1999.

I dont care about what happened in 1999. I do care about what happened to the promises you made in 2004 and what you delivered at the end of 2008.

In closing as “an above the poverty line”, “not so common”, “one in a few” aam admi, I am lead to conclude that you have no real intention of taking care of me and that you intend to make an enemy of anyone who provides me with the opportunity to take care of myself.

Yours Sincerely

a recently uplifted and barely Above The Poverty Line Aaam Admi

The much ballyhooed pro-poor schemes of the UPA are nothing but sponges that sucked the tax payer’s money to keep sychophants in good humor. Even the world bank thinks schemes like the NREGA are an impediment to improving lives of the poor. So you are right, all this is by design to keep the aam aadmi continually aam.

It is rather curious all claims by the dynasty go unaudited and unchallanged, while any claim by non patron political parties is immediately denounced. That’s “Social justice” in the Indian milieu.

  4. Bhavananda says:

Offstumpted, it seems to me, has a penchant for talking to walls. Like MMS, like Sonia Gandhi, or now to Rahul baba. One problem with talking to walls is that it reflects everything back at you, not to count the waste of time.

Yossarin is lucky to have come out of poverty before the elections. For many of us, we can come out of anything, only if we are lucky enough to stay alive. With 5 more years of congress rule, that chance is going down – exponentially. The last time I heard Rahul baba’s name regarding national security was when he was in news for partying all night soon after Mumbaikars got butchered by the Kasai from across the border (Did I say Kasai? My bad … I meant Kasab)

PS – I’m not thinking much of Rahul baba’s economic ideas. I’m sure they’re brilliant. For now, staying alive is more important to me.

  6. drummasala says:

Yeah I did read this news. Also I read that in US lot of churches have been shut down due to poor attendance and economic downturn. Our swamis and babas should continuously work without any spotlight in background irrespective of any government. This will be bigger achievement than bringing BJP to power.

Modiji’s interview with Arnab Goswami. 2parts

  8. drummasala says:

Arnab is also in same esteemed league of Mr. Sirdesai, Madam Dutt, Mr. Gupta, Mr. Thapar and Mr. Mehta. I thought this guy was different than those mentioned. But I was wrong.

  9. arjun says:

Just saw that interview on Times Now. This guy is so blatantly Congressi. Modi had to slap him during the interview for taking the side of Congress.

  10. Raghu says:

Can someone tell the impact of Byre Gowda entering fray from Bangalore South?

  11. holygod says:

I was very unhappy reading abc manifesto. Rather than improving India as a country, rather than uplifting people across all sections, community, caste, creed, religion…they have communalised by giving sops to certain sections and ignoring others. It is very sad to see abc resorting to this kind of antics. I like this blog, but dont post anti abc articles, either your blog will be banned or some abc party worker will file case against you for degrading its party. all the best. Hope no case is filed against me.

  12. Janpar Mallai says:

The nomination of Byre Gowda over someone like SM Krishna shows that the Congress has basically given up. He is a political heir with little base built up. Congress has fielded a lot of heavyweights, there is going to be a lot of embarassment when most of them end up losing!

Janata Dal-Secular’s threat is being overplayed. I put my money on this: There are only two candidates they are fielding that have any shot at all to win: HD Gowda and HDK…

  13. YAPoBber says:

    Rahul Gandhi said:

“Even if there is one last poor person in the country, we will be there”

    Probably what he meant was:
“We will strive to keep at least one person poor if that means we are in Business”

  14. YAPoBer says:

    @Janpar Mallai

Bangalore south is dominated by Brahmins and Vokkaligas. Krishna Byre Gowda is a Vokkaliga. With Brahmin dominated assembly constituencies like Malleswaram & Rajajinagar being part of Bangalore Central now, Krishna Byre Gowda with his “youth” appeal, might prove to be a handful to Ananth kumar.

  15. Balaji says:

    yossarin,

congrats! you and IBN Live are only people who take Rahul Gandhi seriously. ppl who vote bcos “Rahul is young” equal ppl who vote bcos “Nagma is hot”. Good luck following his politics.

    Raghu, Janpar,

S M Krishna contesting would have made the contest a lot more interesting. Most voters in B’luru South will perhaps know very little of Byre Gowda. It shud be easy for Ananth.

Anyway Ananth seems very confident of winning. He recently turned down offer of campaign support from some volunteers and asked them to work in Central or North where he felt it would be tougher than South.

you guys may also wanna check out http://ananth.org/

  16. Sudhir says:

    Drummsala,

The more I see NaMo interview, more I get impressed.

Arnab tried his level best to be holier than thou secular but NaMo was simply amazing.

  17. arjun says:

Per telegraph story, Congress not doing so good in AP. Also given NCP Congress alliance facing rebellion in 6 seats or so, Congress is in deep trouble.

Chances of 150 seats seems distant for Congress.

BJP looking like the single largest party.

  18. Anup says:

I think Chiluveraya swamy or some swamy from Mandya can win if Ambarish does not contest. So, JDS will win 3 seats congress 3 seats and BJP 22! This is the final score i am expecting.

  19. Anup says:

Forget Byregowda, he will get lesser votes than Capt. Gopinath and Prof. Radhakrishna, the JDS candidate.

  20. SuperChooha says:

He can alteast be a change agent. He says he will help the poor. That cant be intrepreted as he wont be there for the educated not so poor class

    http://in.c2w.com/quizzes/67136-Know-your-Politician-Rahul-Gandhi

  21. Anup says:

After reading the telegraph article on Congress prospects in AP and TN, it should be concluded that this election is more like a survival for congress than winning it. If you look at their going alone in UP and Bihar for increasing their base, is an indication that they are more worried about expanding congress in non-existent states than forming the next government under UPA. If it crosses 100 seats then it has just survived.

  22. arjun says:

    BJPs ads.

  23. A.B says:

Surprised to see this article in a MSM paper!

  24. aru says:

What is Rahul achievement in 5 years as MP?

  25. Yogesh says:

    A.B.

I am seeing a clear sense that Media has started to guage the true mood – this is the first sign.

If you see all the comments below – they are so good, representative.

Modi is so good in Times Now! I love him!!!

BTW, he shd have said – “I don’t support national debate on TV b/w Mr Advani and Manmohan Singh”. Bemused, they will ask “WHY?”. He shd say – “you are doing a better job at playing Conmen of CongMen better than they can ever play”. . . so whatever is happening now, is also a “cong vs BJP” debate! H ah aha ha

  26. Yogesh says:

Here is another testimony to the same fact – look at the two questions Prabhu Chawla has answered in Indiatoday.in

Some of the news channels are shamelessly biased against the BJP. Are they not misleading the citizens by giving the party unfair coverage?

Isn’t it a shame for the IPL as it couldn’t host the matches in India?

More to come guys – as long as our leaders keep their toungues in cheeks, this will happen.

  27. Anup says:

This vokkaliga effect and youth effect that people are saying will work for Byregowda in Bangalore south, I some how don’t accept this. Ananth has lot of appeal among young voters and educated middle class in Bangalore and in 9 constituencies of Bangalore South 7 has BJP MLAs and only two has congress MLAs. I don’t think it will be a tough fight also. Ananth will win this one. SMKrishna would have made bigger difference than this Byregowda.

  28. i9indian says:

    Hi All,

My only suggestion all of you is, if there is any bias against BJP or Hidus pls keep a comment there.
    You people always disturn them.

    Thanks,
    i9indian.

@Yogesh, Wish other party leaders also take a cue from Modi regarding handling/combating the media.

    @above
Jaswant Singh has been an embarrassment to the party in recent times. He recently said something like Operation Parakram was wrong etc….this is apart from speculations that he was involved in sabatoging the prospects of vasundra raje in rajastan.

I hoep the guy is sidelined and not given any important ministry if the BJP comes to power.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Mahatma Gandhi’s Sewagram Ashram near Wardha on Tuesday left a few ‘sadhaks’ peeved as the Congress general secretary preferred to take the VVIP Guest Register with him promising to have it returned in a few days.

SBN Vishwaswara Rao, an ISO consultant and a sadhak, said that some government secretary would probably be asked to write a poetic tribute in the register before it is returned

  36. Yogesh says:

Just read IBN politics.com – Classic case of yellow journalism –

“Sushma says NDA not sure of getting majority”

I am not sure that NDA will get majority on its own or not but if NDA emerges as a single largest coalition then the post poll alliances… We will be able to form the government with that,” she said.

Is this a preparation for another emergency kind of blackout of media?

  37. prashant says:

Is this a preparation for another emergency kind of CRAWLING of media?

  38. aru says:

From the post of A.B I found interesting that Sheela Dixit in a function told that her role model is Advani. This is blocked out by all channels. We are proud of 20 + national news channels but none of them want to show an event which is uncomfortable to ruling party. If this is the behavior why some one should impose emergency, censorship etc.

  39. prashant says:

Once again Kandahar, this time by Rahul Gandhi. Why don’t the BJP retaliate. At least BJP can own up and say that we tried to save the lives of our citizens. Perhaps if such a situation, God forbid, once again happens a similar decision may be taken for we consider the lives of our citizens are of primary importance to us.

On the contrary we can very well say that Congressmen won’t even bat an eyelid if the entire plane is blown up as none of the passengers are Congress VIPs or from Gandhi Family. Put the entire matter before the public. Let the people decide. The Congressmen should not be allowed to get away with such kind of remarks. In this regard there are mature voices even from Congress like that of Chidambaram. But Gandhi family has no concern for the common citizens which is evident from their oft repeated remarks.

    Rahul’s choice embarrasses Congress
Chandigarh: Bittu and Danny, the two young Lok Sabha candidates handpicked by AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi to contest the forthcoming elections, have become an embarrassment to the party in Punjab.

Twenty-nine-year-old Ravneet Singh Bittu, grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh and the party’s candidate in the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, has never been to college. Bittu is facing the Akali Dal’s Diljeet Singh Cheema, who has an MBBS degree and has been a practising doctor for more than 10 years.

Pilibhit Sikhs and Muslims rally in support Varun
Pilibhit, March 31 (IANS) Terming charges against young Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi as a political conspiracy, a section of the Sikh community in this Uttar Pradesh district deny that the controversial politician had said anything against any group.

“A large number of Sikhs and Muslims made it a point to attend Varun’s rally. He has never said a word against any community, be it Sikhs or Muslims,” said Amarjit Singh, a farmer of Gajraula Patti village in Pilibhit.

According to the statistics by the district administration, there are over 90,000 Punjabi and Sikh voters in Pilibhit. The district has over one million voters. Sikh and Punjabis of this district are mainly farmers.

“We support Varun and reject and condemn all attempts to defame, malign and prosecute him. We stand behind the proud son of India,” said Virender Singh of Udaykaranpur village.

The gathering of over 100 representatives of the Sikh community from all parts of the district also saw a few Muslims backing Varun.
