It is without parallel in any modern democracy that the Office of the Chief Executive is treated as entitlement as has been the case in India for the past 5 years.
The NDA’s Prime Ministerial candidate and BJP Leader L.K. Advani has thrown the gauntlet to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
#1 – Challenging him to a Live Televised Debate
#2 – Urging him to earn the right to High Office by contesting an election
It is in order to reiterate that the only countries that seem to get by with indisposed and electile dysfunctional Chief Executives are failed Communist Dicatorships like Cuba and North Korea.
So will Dr. Manmohan Singh who looks upon lame duck Prime Ministers like Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral as role models, rise to the challenge or is he too chicken to debate ?

He will give excuse,, that he needs to take rest.
naa, but the latest news is that even left front wants to join the live debate and then we will have all the PM aspirants lining up for debate and then we will have the entire thing cancelled
Well its a shame that someone like Advani with no credentials of any sort of constructive work for the country challenge Manmohan Singh. Manmohan will never be a part of this slug-fest which is not a sign of weakness but a humble way of telling that ‘one can never win an argument against a fool’. Advani will always be the PM in waiting…infact he will go down in history as the guy for longest term as ‘PM in waiting’..
Aadish – a public debate on issues is for the people not for the contenders. To call it a “slug fest” is sheer arrogance and an insult to the voters. It is symptomatic of the undemocratic mindset of the congress that thinks its leaders are above public scrutiny.
aadhish – Becoming PM or not is not the issue but how you become a PM is a issue.
It is fine if Advani goes down as PM-in-waiting, what will not happen is Advani going down as PM with no authority. He earned a name with hard work and dedication and not with the help of any family. Advani will go down with his spine intact and not like Manmahon with electile dysfunction.
Friends of BJP’ campaign in Delhi sees large crowd
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Friends of BJP’ campaign launched in the capital Thursday evening saw an enthusiastic crowd voice support for the party ahead of the elections.
“Friend of BJP – Because India deserves better” is floated by a group of young professionals, entrepreneurs and common citizens. The group has already had meetings in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore.
Launching the campaign at FICCI auditorium here, BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley slammed the Congress for “poor handling” of the country’s economy and security and “dynasty politics”.
Jaitley called Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a “night watchman” of the Congress.
“Like in cricket we have a night watchman, the (Congress) government has Manmohan Singh,” Jaitley said. Night watchman is a lower-order Test batsman who bats higher up the order than usual near the end of the day’s play to protect other, more capable batsmen from being out cheaply in what may be a period of tiredness or in poor light.
Over 1,200 people attended the programme of who around 500 signed for the campaign.
“I got am SMS about this programme a few days ago. I support the BJP as they work for development more than anything else,” Bhaskar Reddy, 33, who works with a private company, told IANS.
Some of the young participants even expressed their desire to see Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at the helm.
“We love Narendra Modi and he should be the one to rule the country,” said east Delhi businessman Parminder Singh. His brother and business partner Pyara Singh echoed the statement.

@aadhish- any constructive work is possible more with the people in power, and you know who has done any constructive work ever since bharat has attained independence !
Going down as PM in waiting is far far far better than destroying and betraying the country (needless to mention the myriad reasons to support this)
The dumb reason/excuse that you gave for PM denying a live public debate goes well with aristocracy – not in a democracy.
Or at least being a professor, one can expect from him to start a blog or some IT means to face educated youth if he can’t face off with LKA. I know you would be coming up with some other excuse like he only talk with dignified poor! The way the party is. Really sick !
Yossarin,
This aadish phenomenon has become far too common these days. I do visit couple of other message boards and see the same thing happening. These people will never debate about the achievements of the past government but will only say random things like “In this economic situation we need an economist like MMS” or “what if his ministers are corrupt, MMS is clean” or “communal BJP.. Gujarat Kandahar” so on and so forth.
When you present facts you will be branded as communal guy.
Aadish and others,
What I don’t understand is what *exactly* is MMS’ contribution to the country, inspite of the long drivel that we hear in the ELM.
Is it because he’s a great academic? If going to Harvard (or a top US university) is a sign, then I’m sure there are plenty of such academics to contend for the top post, including yours truly (:P)
Is it because he’s a mass leader? Surely not, given that he can’t even win a lok sabha seat.
Is it because he is the *master of Indian reform*? Clearly not, because for 40 yrs till ‘91 India failed as an economy because of his and his party’s policies. Then came judgement day and we were bankrupt with no Forex to import anything. All he did subsequently (GATT) was to mortgage India at the World Bank/IMF and comply with their demands in exchange of loans.
What amazes me (correct me if I’m wrong) is that nobody, and I mean absolutely no one, realizes that it was *his* and his party’s policies that called for this disaster of a socialist state. And yet, we call it his contribution?
@Bhavananda
And one PM who has a near ‘right’ approach was the one who made him FM. Unfortunately he (PVNR) had to give in to the family game of that party without any credit. Indeed it was a compulsion for him too.
We do not think that Mr. Singh has the guts to go for a debate with Mr. Advani. Neither will he ever have guts to fight a Lok Sabha election. He has already offered an excuse that he is recovering from by-pass surgery. Then, why is he continuing as PM.
See all pro-nationalist opinions from all newspapers of India in one spot:
http://www.bharatright.com
MMS need not participate in any debate because he is not accountable to voters. Voters did not elect him. He is not involved in the election process at all, not even in campaigning.
This is the irony of indian democratic process.
bloggerind and KKumar: Both of you are correct.
In fact, I’ve been asking this for a long time, about the *EXACT* contribution of MMS – but all I’ve got is long, meaningless drivel from the usual suspects. If anyone can be given any credit for helping the country out, it would be PVNR (and not these Gandhi stooges) but we all know his legacy, or whatever you wanna call it, will forever remain in oblivion for refusing to bend over backwards. Anyone remember Sitaram Kesri being locked up in toilet?
Unfortunately, in absence of any formidable opposition political party, the kangress had most economists/opinion makers in their ranks. These “eminent economists” (adapted from Shourie’s eminent historians) got their eminence as long as they praised MMS/kangress and thus continued the cycle.
Hopefully, this cycle will soon break especially in light of the corporate world going gaga and saying NaMo namahah!
@Bhavananda
You were right on spot on the un-due credit for economic liberalisation going to MMS and Cong. It’s pathetic to see even some BJP’ians towing that line.

Yoss, please update ur distance from delhi for this dumbo
on Thursday that he had offered a ministerial post to Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi [Images] who had refused it.
“I wanted him to become a minister for a long time but he has been refusing,” the Prime Minister told media persons when asked about the role of the youth leaders in the party, particularly Gandhi
Well who are u to offer him minister post. He has offered you pm post and ur living on it. who is he trying to fool.
Why not offer it to Pilot? isnt he youth?
The most important contribution of vajpayee-advani wasor the first time in the history of india seek votes on the issue of development and changed the whole political system of india. They had the guts to do because of their work, which previous ones did not. Eventhough they lost due to the slow nature of our people to come out of a mindset of expecting dole outs which they had been brainwashed into by successive congress govts, BJP again through Modi showed it to the country.
Now people talk of development.
But congress agin in partnership with karuna has forced the country once again into an era of votes for freebies
Australia’s [Images] tennis federation have requested their Davis Cup tie against India be moved out of the country due to security concerns.
The Indian hosts, however, remain confident of staging the May event.
“Australia have told the ITF [International Tennis Federation] that the tie should not be held in India,” All India Tennis Association [AITA] executive director Ranbir Chauhan said on Thursday.
“We have also written back to the ITF,” he added.
“We’re very, very confident the tie is going to take place in India. We guarantee full security, they will be treated as our guests.”
Tennis Australia confirmed approaching the governing body.
“We have sought and received advice from a variety of sources regarding travelling to India,” Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood said.
“It is on the basis of security concerns that we have asked for the tie to be moved out of India. The ITF has received our request and is doing its own security assessment.
Thanks to shifting of IPL for petty politics by chidambaram and by showing once agin his incompetence today world sporting bodies view india as unsafe.
Just imagine, this tie was to be held in chennai.
If chennai is unsafe what would have been their ratings for other cities of india.
Thank you very much mr chidambaram.
BJP must lambast chidambaram tomorrow on thi issue.
NR,
I think sheela bhatt is on mark. Modi has given 4 tickets 4 most influential figures in backward thakore community. All these 4 obc leaders have disputed past,, but are very much required to whitewash congress in gujarat.
Congress had KHAM (kshtriya, harijan, adivasi and muslim) votebank in Gujarat. Modi has successfully taken out KHA out of KHAM,, now its only M with congress.
Some statement might have been made in an emotionally surcharged environment but that cannot be a considered ideology of a party,” he said.

BJP survey gives it slight edge in race against Cong
NEW DELHI: A shrinking UPA offers opportunities to BJP, but the saffron party has considerable ground to cover before it can seize a clear lead
in the 2009 elections lending an even sharper edge to electoral battles in states where it directly squares off against the Congress.
Results of surveys commissioned by BJP show Congress, despite loss of allies and Thursday’s setback in Tamil Nadu where it has eight sitting MPs, is still projected to get 135-odd seats on its own, not too far off from the 145 it won in 2004. The party —seen to be better placed than BJP to win post-poll allies — seems to be riding on strong projections in Andhra Pradesh where it is well placed on 25 seats.
The projected separation between BJP at 160 seats and Congress is quite narrow and the higher number for the saffron party is in part based on a favourable projection in UP. “The story we see is that both the national parties are very much in the fray in 300-odd seats. How they hold their own could decide the match,” said G V L Narasimha Rao, who has conducted the surveys for BJP.
The results of the number crunching were presented to BJP prime ministerial nominee L K Advani a couple of days ago with the campaign team emphasising the need to decisively rout Congress in direct battles. Congress was likely to do reasonably well in Haryana and could improve in Punjab and Rajasthan and BJP needs to contain losses here while pressing hard in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Assam.
Of the projections, the UP figures can be disputed by independent observers. Rao sees a 20-plus tally but if this variable goes awry, it will sharply pull down BJP’s numbers. He argues that Congress’s appeal has grown but the party may not win seats. An SP-Congress alliance could have hoped to attract Muslim votes which are now likely to split between Mulayam Singh and Mayawati.
Similarly, an absence of an RJD-LJP-Congress alliance could help BJP in Bihar. Surveys showed a Muslim preference for Congress which might now get scattered. There are gains for Congress in Orissa but BJP feels that it is not out of the picture.
The larger message for BJP is that unless it can effectively bat Congress out of the game, the post-poll scenario remains highly unpredictable as the saffronites have no allies in south India. The party faces an uphill task of emerging on top by a decisive margin and then attracting allies like AIADMK or TDP and other smaller parties.
The overall tally for NDA, even by its surveys is around 217, more than 50 adrift of a majority. Figures for UPA, which Congress is bound to dispute, are lower at 180. The “threat” of a third front is very much real unless one of the big two puts on a big total. Then even regional parties would be more prepared for a stable five years in power than a government that lives hand to mouth.
In our opinion, BJP is likely to get 155 seats with no more than 15 seats in UP. With NDA numbers coming at no more than 200, NDA, will automatically attract TDP, TRS, AIADMK & BJD with some independents to reach 272. The reason for our confidence is as follows. Congress is not likely to cross 135 and UPA not likely to cross 185. In this situation, the President will have no choice but to call Mr. Advani for discussion at the least. Since Congress and BJP together will cross 272, all parties will know that they cannot form the government without one of the big 2. Since, TDP & BJD will never support Congress, they will automatically veer toward NDA. That leaves AIADMK & PMK (likely to get 35+). If Jaswant Singh manages to weave magic with Amma, NDA should be in.

Ifeel that internal surveys need to stay internal and this applies to electoral strategies as well. Bjp has this problem of declaring it all to media.
It started in 2004. Atleast if they are leaking wrong strategies its fine, they seem to be leaking their correct strategies. Your opposition must make some efforts to know it.
Our PM has asked what is the contribution of Shri Advani to the country. Let me count the contributions of our dear PM in this regard.
1. As finance Secretary probably he has the record for signing the highest number of Re.1 note in 1979-80. The story goes like this. Mr. Charan Singh was the Finance Minister in 1979 when our beloved present day Prime Minister was the Finance Secretary. Mr. Charan Singh presented a budget with a huge deficit. To finance the deficit RBI refused to print notes. Re. 1 notes which are printed by Ministry of Finance was printed in copious numbers to finance the deficit and duly signed by our Dr. economist resulting in a huge inflation in those days on the back of which Mrs. Indira Gandhi rode to power in 1980.
2. As a civil servant he was tossed around and as Chief Economic Advisor in 1990 under the Chandrasekar Government gave advice to Pledge the Gold to borrow which resulted in the downfall of that Government.
3. As Finance Minister he presided over the finances of India during 1990-95, known as much for sleaze as for economic reforms. The Stock Market scam, Urea Scam and Telocom scam resulted in the downfall of Congress.
His contributions have always helped India throw out Congress. I hope the same happens now.
I think the BJP survey indicates what we have discussed here. BJP has to sweep strongholds to stay in contention.
The reason why BJP is publishing its survey results is because it has to counter the numerous surveys that are showing that BJP is losing.
I think that it will be a close race for the single largest party. Whoever wins will not be by large margin.
arjun,
I have no issue with giving out numbers, but must not be the true numbers. See those surveys were hyped up one, bjp too could have released it through sources that numbers were like 175.
In a surprise shower of praise on BJP leader and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, Vijayakanth said “if people look up to Gujarat, it was because the big hand there (Modi) doesn’t indulge in corruption. The same can be emulated in other states as well.”
Without naming any party, the actor-politician said he was offered crores of money to forge an alliance for the elections. “`They offered me Rs 100 crore and Rs 150 crore because they are confident of earning Rs 500 crore. If I had wanted to bargain, my marriage hall (demolished by the National Highway Authority of India which comes under DMK minister T R Baalu) would have been spared and I would be standing before you as a crorepati. But I did not enter politics to earn money but to serve the people.”
So looks to be the amount that congress offered through corporates.
NR, The real number they have in the survey is anybody’s guess.
Congress has released a similiar survey result saying that they will get 150 seats.
Yogendra Yadav: Most such controvesies tend to remain limited to a small section of population. I think it would dent BJP;s image among the more infomred and progressive people. But these sections are not normally the BJP voters.
So yogendra yadav means to tell that those who support bjp are not progressive.
NR – by “progressive” he means those who suffer a fragile conscience and feel guilty that their success is on account of someone else’s victimhood
Per Yogendra Yadav, anyone voting for BJP is not a “progressive”.
How about the educated professionals who are showing up for friends of BJP event? Are they not educated or informed?
BTW wp.com has finally enabled a Twitter widget so Doosra is restored to its former INI glory
Per Yogendra Yadav, anyone voting for BJP is not a “progressive”.
Internationally, “progressive” is code for wanna-be communists. In the Indian context however,
Progressive = pseudo-secularist
Non-BJP voter = pseudo-secularist
Pseudo-secularist=Communist, Congress, UPA voter
So only neo , wannabe communists are “well informed” according to Yogendra Yadav.
According to Yogendra Yadav, if Congress is doing so well, how come allies are leaving it , north and south.
As expected.. YSR’s evangelist son-in-law got into action and is canvassing in churches..
Here is a Telugu news item: http://andhrajyothy.com/mainshow.asp?qry=/2009/mar/26main4
Here is the gist:
Br. Anil Kumar distributed money and brochures in a church. The brochure explains God’s rule delivered by YSR government.. etc.
Christian (from SC, BC, Kapu, Reddy, Kshatriya, Kamma and Brahmin communities) population is more than 20% in coastal districts.
Thats a great news.
With almost most of the mp3 players having voice recorders, it would be prudent for bjp to record every speech of their in voice recorders, if not video tape it. The enemies can stoop to any level.
Raghu,
I read even jayasudha is campaigning during prayer meetings. So where is the EC on moral code.
“I will liquidate terrorism and finish Naxalism. I will work for an egalitarian and casteless society. We will give reservation to the poor among upper castes and amend Constitution to give reservation to Dalit Christians, minorities and OBCs among Muslims.” Mayawati said
Third sentence is in contradiction to the second by creating caste in religions which dont have caste.
In the first sentence she means that she has created an army of goondas to take on naxalites and terrorists.

Congress might have termed Varun Gandhi’s inflammatory speeches in Pilibhit as violent and communal, but on Thursday the party saw nothing wrong in aligning with a radical Muslim outfit, Ittehad-e-Millat Council in Uttar Pradesh whose president had announced a reward of Rs 25 crore on former US President George Bush’s head.
Ittehad-e-Millat Council will support Congress in the parliamentary elections and the parties would have a seat-sharing arrangement in the State Assembly election slated for 2012. The parties will also have joint campaigning for parliamentary elections.
Ittehad-e-Millat Council president M Tauqeer Raza Khan kicked up a controversy in 2006 when he announced a reward of Rs 25 crore to anyone who got him the head of Bush. Raza was provoked over publication of “objectionable” cartoon of Prophet Mohammed by a Danish artist. The cartoon had angered Muslims all across the world. Khan had blamed Bush for protecting and encouraging people like the Danish cartoonist and appealed to every Muslim to contribute Re 1 for the award. Bush, who is considered a great friend of India by Congress-led UPA Government, was in India at that time.
As Congress general secretary in-charge of UP Digvijay Singh announced the alliance with Ittehad-e-Millat Council at party headquarters here on Thursday, he faced a barrage of questions on whether Congress supported the Muslim outfit’s ideology. At first, Singh tried to brush these remarks under the carpet by claiming that these were not made by Khan. However, Khan himself agreed that he had made those remarks at that time.
The Congress was red-faced as it claimed that it had not extensively vetted Ittehad-e-Millat Council’s background. Digvijay Singh tried to save face by saying: “They have extended support to us. But we don’t subscribe to those views.”
When asked how it could join hands with an outfit which has been propagating violence when Congress has been criticising Varun Gandhi for giving such inflammatory speeches, Singh said: “What views were expressed by Ittehad-e-Millat Council’s president were before he joined hands with Congress. Under no condition do we subscribe to any ideology or any thought which is communal in nature or which propagates violence.”
Singh tried to play down the issue by feigning ignorance to Raza’s controversial remarks which occupied media front pages for days. “Frankly, I didn’t know. Fanatic religious fundamentalism is something we have always opposed. Some statement might have been made in an emotionally surcharged environment but that cannot be a considered ideology of a party,” he said.

“NEW DELHI: The Roman Catholic church in Kerala is asking Christians not to vote for atheists – a reference to the state’s ruling Marxists – in the general elections, saying they are trying to destroy faith.
While the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), which leads the Left government in the state, says the allegations are unfair and that it has always tried to protect minorities, the church is far from convinced.
The Kerala Catholic Bishop Council (KCBC) has prepared a pastoral letter, which will be read out during mass on Sunday, urging the laity not to vote for those preaching atheism and indulging in violence in the April 16 Lok Sabha elections in the state.

Abdul Nasar Madhani and his PDP are the new found allies of CPM. Following (link below) is the latest of a series of articles appeared in the New Indian Express. Even the top echelons of this party has no objection for the alliance though it is reported to have been objected to by the Chief Minister of Kerala. He has also reported to have written a letter but as in the case of the Lavlin Corruption case this letter too reportedly ended up in the nearest dustbin. If this trend goes shortly they may find their allies in Osama Bin Laden and others of his ilk too. Just they want to worm up their way towards power and play stooge to China.
