India Elections 2009 – Fit to Campaign Too Chicken to Debate ?

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh it appears is back in the news after two months of indisposition. The Prime Minister chaired a cabinet meeting, called Varun Gandhi’s remarks unfortunate and claimed that he was fit to campaign.

So if Manmohan Singh is fit to campaign why is he too chicken to debate ?

Will Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accept Mr. L.K. Advani’s challenge and agree to a series of Televised Debates so we can for once as a nation make this election about National Issues ?

Will Prime Minister who claimed confidence that his party will be voted back on the strength of his performance care to hold himself to public scrutiny on his government’s real accomplishments ?

Here are some excerpts from Open Letter of No Confidence July 2008

So one may as well ask of the Prime Minister, what in his view would be accomplishments of his government that merit our confidence ?

The Prime Minister did present us with such an opportunity recently in his reply to the debate on the President’s address, March of 2008.? That speech by the Prime Minister provides a glimpse into the flawed and divisive politics of guilt and victimhood that has been the prime motivation of the UPA’s policies over the last 4 years.

Speaking of the Aam Admi, the Prime Minister had this to say

chronic poverty, ignorance and diseases which still characterizes millions of our people in our country

That sir is the kind of “doom and gloom” vision of India the Prime Minister expects to inspire this nation with confidence.

As far as accomplishments go, this is what the Prime Minister had to say

the number of doctors, the number of nurses, the number of specialists that are now in place, I think, is much larger than what it was four years ago

How sir does the Prime Minister expect confidence when he does not even know his facts and he thinks things are better ?

The entire speech can be reduced to really 3 issues when it comes to what really the Prime Minister thinks are his accomplishments.

If work for hundred days is available, each family, even if it has only one earning member, would have an entitlement of Rs. 8000 per annum

First is this entitlement called NREGA. The second is his Communal Socialism.

take pride in saying that our Government has the courage to recognise that our minorities have not benefited appropriately

The third is of the farm loan waiver to address the distress in agriculture.

The reality however Sir, is that the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Congress President Sonia Gandhi stand guilty of betrayal of the Aam Admi on all 3 issues. The NREGA has betrayed the aam admi by distorting the rural labor market and encouraging a cultute of entitlement. The betrayal of the aam admi is even more damning when it comes to addressing educational backwardness. The betrayal of the farmer is a cruel comedy on not just the farmer but the future generations that will have to foot the unpaid distress bill of this betrayal.

But Sir all of this betrayal pales in the face of this naked hypocrisy when it comes to the Minority Community, more specifically the Muslim Community.

The Prime Minister has hoodwinked the Muslim Community with his Communal Socialism, while attempting to pull a smoke screen over the Congress’ decades old betrayal of the aam Muslim through the practice of vote bank politics. While the UPA regime continued to encourage Muslim power brokers while paying lip service to the aam Muslim, the Prime Minister was busy communalizing the budget to further encourage the ghettoization of the community.

But the most damning aspect of Manmohan and Sonia’s betrayal of the aam Muslim was in Nandigram when the communists were busy paying back with the same coin. The Muslims of Nandigram have been victims of the worst of conspiracies of silence and there is no hope of justice ever being served to them.

That sir are the accomplishments of this Prime Minister on the basis of which he seeks confidence.

dont u think that this new film Firaaq by nandita das voilates model code of conduct.
reason producer/presentater of that film is “PERCEPT” who are media campaigner of Congress

  3. offstumped says:

Prashant – thats a stretch unless Nandita Das is directly involved by making political statements.

  4. NR says:

well prashanth percept is only media company. if thats yardstick, you have party man producing films, which may target others, movies of film stars in electoral fray and campaign fray being played across channels, worse movies of films stars involved releasing during code time.

The line between movie world and code is blurred

Former Union Minister and Congress leader Dilip Ray and former MP Anadi Sahu may join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Ray, who owns Mayfair Group of Hotels, was earlier in Biju Janata Dal while he was sacked from the party after difference of opinion with party Chief Naveen Patnaik. Sahu, who is now in NCP, was a former BJP MP from Silk City of Berhampur.

Both the leaders may join BJP before the Lok Sabha polls as they were assured for party ticket. Sahu has reportedly been assured for Cuttack Lok Sabha seat.

The move of the BJP came after the split in 11- year old alliance with BJD. The saffron party had also approached NCP State chief Bijay Mohapatra but he reportedly rejected the offer.

  7. NR says:

In a significant political drama, Bijay Mohapatra on Thursday resigned from the post of NCP State president after its central leadership strike an alliance with BJD.

Talking to reporters here at NCP State headquarters in Bhubaneswar, Mohapatra termed the act of NCP central leadership to save Naveen Patnaik Government following split with BJP was unfortunate and uncalled for.

“It was a blunder to save an inefficient Government led by Naveen Patnaik,” Mohapatra said after announcing his resignation. “As we know, I have been fighting against Naveen single handedly but the act of NCP chief Sharad Pawar and others shocked me,” an angry Mohapatra told this correspondent.

“I have requested them to reconsider the decision to support Naveen Government but they reject my proposal,” he added that the Pawar has sold out Orissa NCP to BJD.

My fight will continue against Naveen, Mohapatra made it clear. Senior party leaders Prasant Nanda and Anadi Sahu were present at the present meet.

Meanwhile, it was expected since Mohapatra skipped a meeting on seat sharing with BJD on Wednesday.

NCP Chief Pawar was keen to ally with BJD, but its Mohapatra was a known political rival of Naveen. Mohapatra after being sacked from BJD had formed the Orissa Gana Parishad but it was later merged with NCP.

“It was preplanned conspiracy by BJD to restrict me from entering into State Assembly,” Mohapatra added. Meanwhile, former Union Minister and Congress leader Dilip Ray and former MP Anadi Sahu may join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The saffron party had also approached NCP ex- State chief Mohapatra but he reportedly rejected the offer.

While the term ‘betrayal’ is being chanted by the saffron leaders in 2009, Mahapatra had been doing so since 2000.

Incidentally, while every body in Orissa including BJP was in praise for Naveen it was Mahapatra who first termed Naveen as a ‘traitor’.

Though leaders like Nalini Kant Mohanty, Rama Krushna Patnaik and Srikant Jena preferred to join congress to fight against Naveen, anti-Congress stand of Bijay forced him to form a regional party named Orissa Gana Parishad.

While BJP leaders enjoying their days in cosy rooms in Naveen Patnaik ministry, Mahapatra continued to stand for a decade under sun and rain opposing Patnaik.

Incidentally Mahaptra is the only leader available in Orissa who has been burning the fire to engulf Naveen regime in the state. Here is an opportunity for Advani and BJP to catch Mohapatra, one of the finest enemy of BJD chief if they sincerely want to take revenge against ‘traitor Naveen’, said an analyst

The proposed Kandhamal Bandh call given on Friday by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and all its affiliated bodies has been postponed in view of the HSC examinations.

“We have postponed the bandh taking the future of students into account as the HSC examination is on,” a senior VHP leader said.

Earlier, the VHP and other pro-Hindu outfit were called for Kandhamal Bandh protesting the killing of RSS worker Pravat Panigrahi. Some unidentified gun men shot dead Panigrahi suspecting as a rioters.

“Instead of bandh, we would stage a dharana in front of the office of the district Collector seeking immediate action against the killers,” they added.

Meanwhile, the Sangh Pariwar blamed Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and twin cities Archbishop Raphael Chinnath for the brutal murder of Panigrahi. “We blamed Naveen and Church for the killing as few BJD leaders have an understanding with the Christian Militants to spread mayhem in Kandhamal,” Bajarang Dal national co-convener Subash Chauhan lambasted.

VHP State general secretary GP Rath, Vanavasi Kalyam Ashram State general secretary Dr Laxmikant Dash, Hindu Jagaran Samukhya State coordinator Basudev Barik, Swami Pranarupananda Saraswati and Swami Jeevan Chaitnya Maharaj jointly came down heavily on Naveen for his excessive minority appeasement step.

They served an ultimatum to the Chief Minister asking him to ensure the arrest of the killers or face the music

He has every chance of winning from South chennai, but if Maran shifts from central to south, there is no chance. But by hard campaigning he will be able to lay the base.

  13. offstumped says:

Jujung – Kristof diagonises the symptom right but his cure is no solution. Traditional news media was anything but “neutral” or “unbiased”. Its just that there was no way for one to refute and do fact check so most of the time what was printed was taken to be the truth.

Ultimately we all make decisions in personal lives based on pre-conceived biases and prejudices either consciously or sub-consciously.

The polarization of opinion in Public debate is merely reflecting that human reality and it is accentuating it with the ease of dissemination that comes with blogs, twitter utube etc…

I dont buy this dubious “we need diversity in public debate” argument which opens a backdoor for the State to intervene in the media/internet.

Leave it to the judgement of the individual to decide what opinions he or she wants to consume.

‘VOTE Cong out’. This is the simple message that the BJP and the Elanthamizhar Iyakkam (EI), a pro- Eelam group of young persons in Tamil Nadu, will be sending across to voters through different SMS (Short Messaging Service) campaigns for the Lok Sabha elections on May 13.

While the BJP has already kick-started its SMS campaign, highlighting the achievements of the party and the vision of Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani, Elanthamizhar Iyakkam, formed in the aftermath of the suicide of Muthu Kumar, has planned to send out SMSs to voters in constituencies from where the Congress party will field its candidates in the State. The organisation, which has already obtained one lakh signatures from people across the state against the Congress party for its tacit military support to the Sri Lankan army, will start sending messages with statements made by Ambedkar, Gandhiji and Periyar against the Congress party from Friday, K Arunabarathi, state organiser of EI told The New Indian Express.

‘Already 500 people have registered to get the SMS messages against the Congress party by paying Rs 100,’ he told The New Indian Express. The Congress party’s stand on the Sri Lankan issue and the suffering of Eelam Tamils would also be highlighted in the messages, he added.

A BJP message, on the other hand, reads as follows: “L K Advani unveils BJP’s grand IT vision for transforming India, Rs 10,000 laptop to one crore students, internet-enabled education in every school, e-banking for every Indian, 1.2 new IT- enabled jobs inrural areas alone. Read more at www.

lkadvani.in.” Carried out by the IT cell of the State unit, the BJP’s e-campaign was launched on the basis of a survey which found that over 10 constituencies in Tamil Nadu were highly urbanised.

Besides SMS, the e-campaign will also use email and voice drop facility “Through this campaign, we were able to mobile 600 volunteers comprising IT professional, accountants in the last one month, who, though not party cadre, will participate in the campaign,’ said R Kodandaraman, president of the State BJP’s IT Cell.

In the next one month we would cover all the major cities including Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai through the programme, Advani@ campus, mainly targeting the youth, he added

Jiggs, so what i had said in reply to your question seems to be true. Whether DMk wins or not, there are efforts to reduce congress tally.

  27. NR says:

Senior BJP leader B B Shivappa, who had entered into a truce with chief minister Yeddyurappa after he extracted an assurance from the latter that either Shivappa himself or a person of his choice would be fielded from Hassan constituency on behalf of the BJP, has raised his banner of revolt again. He is disappointed, as the BJP has chosen his bete-noire and long time adversary K H Hanume Gowda as its candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency.

Disgruntled MP Basanagouda Yatnal has already held a round of talks with the Swabhimani Vedike founder and ex-MLA Urimajal Ram Bhat about the future course of action against the ‘original’ BJP activists being overlooked. Shivappa, who had deserted Yatnal’s camp with the hope of getting a ticket, has returned to his fold again. Yatnal said, that further course of action would be decided in a couple of days, after holding a meeting of like-minded people. The stated aim of the group will be to bring back the genuine culture of the BJP, of adhering to set principles and respecting senior workers of the party without hankering for power. The main target of these people will be chief minister Yeddyurappa and state BJP president D V Sadanand Gowda, against whom the group members have one or the other grouse. The meeting will be held here on Sunday March 22, it is gathered. Yatnal, who has not been chosen as the party candidate for the Lok Sabha election, has been accusing the state leadership of the party of being intoxicated by both power and money.

In the meanwhile, Hassan BJP district unit has, in a complaint made to the party national president Rajnath Singh, veteran leader L K Advani and chief minister Yeddyurappa has expressed its resentment at the choice of Hanume Gowda as the party candidate from this constituency.

There are indications that the party national leaders Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley have patched up their differences and the differences between Yeddyurappa and Anant Kumar have become a closed chapter. The state unit of the BJP is facing fresh revolt from within, from longtime party workers who complain that they are being sidelined in favour of the newcomers.

    off-topic, on Firaaq:

Firaaq is pretty good movie. I watched it in the Kerala Film Festival in December. It’ll put most Gujaratis to shame. And it doesn’t even have any political angle except for one character played by Paresh Raval who can be qualified as a Sangh sympathizer/mob raiser. BJP has nothing to fear.

BJP should lay its hand off Nandita Das too. She is very well meaning artist with sound political but impartial views. Don’t push her towards the Congress. The film producers might be trying to attract publicity by “gaining a boycott” in Gujarat. Don’t humor them.

  32. arjun says:

Nandita Das has campaigned for banning of BJP. How can she be a well meaning person?
What impartial views? She wants to ban the BJP but hangs out with Rahul gandhi.

Is that the definition of impartial, well meaning artists for a BJP supporter?

  35. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

Balaji: Why Gujaratis should be ashamed of ? When 59 persons were roasted alive in the torched Sabarmati train nobody ever felt ashamed. Rather some jerks tried to say that the victims themselves set it ablaze.

Why nobody is ashamed of the fate of Kashmiri Pandits ? Why the same people who say that Gujaratis should be ashmed are not themselves ashamed of when still more than 3,50,000 hindus are in the camps in Jammu and Delhi.

Why nobody is ashamed of when anti-nationals who raised the Pakistani flag objected to the allotment of even an inch of land for even temporary shelters for Amarnath Yatris on the spacious plea of demographic change.

There are many more actions or rather inactions for which these same persons(who say that Gujaratis should be ashmemed of) should themselves hide behind a purdah due to shame.

Why nobody felt ashmed when aa Swamiji and his disciples were gunned down and hacked to death and only they felt shame on the aftermath. Even two days before some hindu activists were killed, alleged to be by Maoists. But nobody felt ashamed.

Conclusion: One should feel ashamed only when persons other than those belonging to Hindu Dharma are killed !!!

Unfortunately in India devils are quoting scriptures.

  36. prashant says:

and so called (“well meaning artist” “sound political” “impartial view”) Nandita Das should clarify that:

3)Why a Special screening for RAHUL GANDHI when election date has been announced.

4)clarify that NaMo had approched for special screening when CMO office denies it.

FACT is FIRAAQ is a Congress sponsered film bfore election and money were diverted from Govt Coffer as CAG too had pointed that 5,000 CR missing as given to different NGO.

If Nandita Das was sensible & impartial then she could have wated till may 16 to release her film as at present ELECTION is going on.
Nandita Das being a Artist should have avoided controversy which could create hatred among people.

If FIR can be lodged against VARUN gandhi then why not on Nandita Das.

Following the surprise victory of Anjan Kumar Yadav against BJP candidate Bandaru Dattatreya in the 2004 elections, everyone felt that the young leader would concentrate on development.

Not much has changed in the constituency even after five years.

And yet, Anjan Kumar Yadav, who will be contesting for the second time, wants to regain the seat purely on YSR’s development plank.

During the election campaign, he will highlight the welfare schemes initiated by Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, which, he assumes, will help him in bagging the seat.

Citizens to whom `Express’ spoke said both Anjan Kumar Yadav and Dattatreya had disappointed them (the latter, known to be soft-spoken, served the constituency thrice).

Anjan is the waste fellow among all MPs that congress have in the state. He is only visible when there is some festival. Dattatreya did something surely and not nothing as the article mentions. I stayed there during those five years of his tenure. But still, putting a younger person like Kishan Reddy instead of Dattatreya would have helped more. Kishan is popular in all the assembly segments surrounding his constituency in Himayath Nagar area.

I think Dattatreya also has a good chance of winning because people remember he did something and especially BJP is popular in this area. I have asked many politically inclined type people here and they say BJP is surely going to come back in the city. TDP will also take a share of constituencies in city this time. Leave the old city where MIM is strong and you will find congress may not even open its account for assembly elections in Hyderabad-Secunderabad area. City people hate congress like anything because the once peaceful city has become worst now.

  39. Anup says:

by shanti Priya on Mar 20, 2009 08:40 PM Permalink | Hide replies

    Consider the facts:
    1) 6 months back, Nandita Da’s firm gets 2 crore rupee Govt contract from Congress party without any justification.
    2) Movie made several months back, but has to be released 2 months before elections.

    Could the reasons be:
    1) To incite communal feelings and get muslim votes to congress party. Muslims are gullible enough to fall for this again and again.
    2) Of-course (pseudo) sickular are shameless and will be eternally slaves of these fake Gandhi’s.

  48. prashant says:

that 5000 crore missing from governmemnt exchequere and as pointed out by CAG is now coming overground in the shape of film by Nandita Das.
    wait more will come out

  49. prashant says:

RAJDEEP SARDESAI is the FATHER of VARUN GANDHI “DOCTERED” CD.
WE KNOW WELL HOW HE DOCTORED “CASH FOR VOTE”

VARUN MUST TAKE THIS CASE TO LEGAL CONCLUSION AND ALL THOSE DOCTORED THIS TAPE MUST BE PUT BEHIND THE BAR.

  50. prashant says:

VARUN HAS RAISED FEW ISSUE AND LET MEDIA CLARIFY IF THOSE ARE TRUE OR NOT BEFORE CASTING VARUN SPEECH AS HATRED.
Slaughtered remains of cows have been found in various homes
Thousands and thousands of people from the Hindu community have been placed under arrest under the NSA
Three temples have been vandalised in the block where he is supposed to have given that speech
Village pradhans have been threatened daily
Quota shop owners have had their quotas cancelled
There is widespread fear that arms are being smuggled into ghettos in this sensitive border area to be used against India
The Hindu community is in a siege in its own country

  51. prashant says:

I am totally impressed by varun the way he made the staement to Media and answer their allegation.
now take our Rahul Baba who had no guts to face the media and deny the allegation that he made hate speech on babri masjid, bangladesh war etc…
it used to be left to congress spokesperson to face the media even when they are their doormat.
I JUST LOVED THE CONFIDENCE OF VARUN GANDHI TO FACE THE MEDIA

  52. Ot says:

Interesting bit of info there. In the past the congress funded Teesta Setalvad to make secularism videos before elections. What I heard is that two versions of these videos exist. One is softcore — for general consumption. Another is hardcore, shown only in Muslim areas. This is congress’ way of working around EC restrictiions to canvass for Muslim vote. The “islam khatre mein hain” message.

  53. proud indian says:

Our dear Sardesai… in his latest blog :
    let-not-bjp-ka-gandhi-get-away-easily
    on Ibnlive

starts the blog on Varun and in first sentence says:

“In the backlanes of Uttar Pradesh, Varun Feroze Gandhi is referred to as the “BJP ka Gandhi”. ”

    Oh what a TYPO ERROR……..

how will he face the “powerful woman” now…
and the animal loving lady will be tempted to let loose some rare species on him…

Seems he is having a overdose of “Gandhi”….

  54. aru says:

New flash in times of India says JMM-Congress alliance splits.
How come Mulayam, Lalu, paswan and Now Shibu soren doesn’t see the wave for the congress like our media? It looks psephologists and Tv channels give more seats to congress than their alliance partners.

  55. KKumar says:

Is this the end for the United Progressive Alliance?

In Uttar Pradesh, its seat-sharing arrangement with the Samajwadi Party has fallen through. In Bihar, it had a falling out with Lalu’s RJD and Paswan’s LJP. In Maharashtra too, there are reports that its alliance with the NCP could be facing problems.

  56. bhanu says:

    Folz:
Read this in today’s Free Press Journal a Mumbai newspaper. Seems that a distant relative who is also the Congress candidate against Varun is said to have got the speech secretly taped and had it sent to a tv channel after a lapse of more than a week. The congress candidate is locked in a long standing dispute with the Gandhis over property matters and is reported to have lodged cases against Maneka at the time of the last Loksabha elections as well.
