India Elections 2009 – Here come the Modi baiters

It is clear that the man the Congress spin meisters in the media fear the most on the campaign trail is Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

In what is a highly questionable opinion piece Ashok Desai, who this blogger used to respect for his intellectual acumen, has made a cheap attempt at Modi baiting. Being the managing editor at Telegraph this cheap attempt should come as no surprise for the Telegraph has become the Congress’ primary media vehicle for spin.

The piece titled “What made Narendra Modi what he is makes a bold tell-you-all claim, but is really shallow on facts and highly subjective in its opinions.

For someone who probably has never met or never spoken to Narendra Modi, Mr. Desai claims have to be taken with deep skepticism. His only source being a book Mr. Modi wrote on his experiences during Emergency.

It is a reflection of the lopsided morality practised by intellectuals like Ashok Desai that a Narendra Modi who has taken the hard path of contesting and winning democratic elections should be called an “autocrat”. One doesnt remember Mr. Ashok Desai expressing outrage over electile dysfunctional surrogates like Manmohan Singh getting “selected” to the office of Prime Minister.

Be that as it may, here is where Mr. Desai’s piece is really shallow and subjective.

Mr. Desai first claims that Mr. Modi’s prejudices were acquired during Emergency and then goes on to charge that his book on Emergency in Gujarat was bereft of any thought or reflection.

So how pray did Mr. Desai conclude that Mr. Modi’s prejudices were acquired during Emergency if as Mr. Desai claims Mr. Modi does not reflect any thoughts not even the stereotype prejudices of an RSS man ?

Mr. Desai exposes himself as being trapped in the same petty prejudices that he accuses Mr. Modi of when he tries to malign Mr. Modi for having made tasteless and vulgar remarks on Sonia Gandhi.

While Mr. Narendra Modi is known to be one not to hold back his punches, there is no record of him ever having made any vulgar remarks on Sonia Gandhi. But that doesnt stop Mr. Desai from his below the belt assault on Mr. Modi.

Mr. Desai’s lack of moral certitude becomes even more clear when one observes that while he is troubled by Mr. Modi’s visceral hatred against followers of Indira Gandhi for her having imposed Emergency and deprived the nation of Democratic freedom he has no compunctions in repeatedly calling Mr. Modi an autocrat despite his being a democratically elected leader.

Mr. Desai’s piece stands out less for its intellectual worth and more for its petty, shallow and subjective opinions making it rather ironic for Mr. Desai concludes his piece calling Mr. Modi’s “intellectual equipment” limited.

In closing, the following question must be posed

If the Congress spin meisters in the media like Ashok Desai want to have a debate on “limited intellectual equipment” of  Narendra Modi

then

perhaps a public debate on “the electile dysfunctional political equipment” of the Congress’ candidate for Prime Minister is fair game ?

Mohan rawale is the correct choice form the merged Bombay south and south central. Rawale drubs the Congress and has been doing it for atleast past 3 elections.

    he deserves the seat.

    @G…

I haven’t heard about it the petition.

In any case people are well aware of their votes this time around, I sincerely hope that this spirit continues.

IMO, Bombay-South and the newly formed Andheri Parliamentary Constituency are serial offenders ( voter apathy), here’s where the cream, page 3 idiots reside.

other constituencies will do their duty this time around.

    Lets see.

Anybody has any idea what is the latest position of BJP in MP. Can it repeat 25 seats of last time? I saw this article and according to this it is as safe as Gujarat.

  6. arjun says:

BJP should win in MP since it won the Assembly polls so handsomely recently.

The question is whether it can keep 24 seats that it had won in 2004. BJP thinks it is not impossible. Maybe 20-21 seats is a good number from MP.

They are also thinking they will be able to repeat 10/11 performance in Chattisgarh.

  7. Jiggs says:

    Anup…

I agree with Arjun Mp & Chattisgarh they will hold fort.

  8. Balaji says:

Its a 20-20 game for the BJP. It should aim for 20 seats from 5 states MH, UP, MP, Gujarat and Karnataka. Otherwise it’ll struggle to emerge as the single largest party. It seems Maharashtra and UP are the places where BJP has a realistic chance of turning things around. And good that these 2 states are managed by Modi and Jaitley.

  9. Meenakshi says:

no wonder there is no comment section….seems Desai doesn’t like criticism, something he likes do himself.

  10. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

Look at the sparring between CPI(M), the big brother and CPI, the junior partner of the LDF. The big brother is on a spree of capturing the erstwhile held seats of CPI, Janta Dal and RSP (Ponnani, Kozhikode, Kollam). The worst part is that the Ponnani seat is being usurped by the Big brother CPM to hand over to the PDP (of the Abdul Nasser Madani) supported Hussain Rendathani while CPI has nominated A.P. Kunhamu who has a soft corner for NDF. Both PDP and NDF are alleged to be fundamentalist organisations. Where is then the secular credentials of both CPM and CPI. For them secularism means anything against hindu/hinduism but minority fundamentalisam is welcome.

CPI has already given an ultimatum to CPI(M) either to allow them to contest from all the four seats or they will be contesting 18 seats leaving two seats for RSP and Janta Dal.

This is a precursor for losing a major part of the seats by LDF even if they manage the rag tag coalition as the front is mired by the Lavlin corruption alleged to be indulged in by Party secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. Perhaps the above imbroglio is created so that the defeat in the Lok Sabha election can be attributed to the internecine quarrels amongst the front partners rather than to the the major Corruption charges against the CPM Party general secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

This will surely reflect in the farce called third front.

Tom Vedekkan has decided not to contest from Thrissur, after facing stiff opposition from local party leaders, which he tried to contest getting support from the Christian Church and also from the top.

Kerala political scene is getting murkier. But, of course, they are playing out an absurd kind of minority communalism in the guise of secularism rather it can be APTLY called SICKULARISM.

The BJP team is getting frustated and demotivated very fast ! Guys you may like to advise Arun Jaitley not to lose hope so soon….

    ==========================@1=============================
Differences between Bhartiya Janata Party and General Secretary Arun Jaitley surfaced prominently as the leader boycotted party’s Central Election Committee meeting today.

Jaitley is unhappy with Sudhanshu Mittal’s appointment as the in-charge of BJP political affairs in north eastern states. He has expressed his discontent to party President Rajnath Singh.

    =========================@2====================================
Firing directly against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP General Secretary Arun Jaitley called him ‘night watchman’.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Jaitley said, ‘Manmohan Singh is sherely acting as a night watchman paving way for the member of Nehru-Gandhi family to the PM seat.’

Congress Party has strongly objected on BJP MP’s comments calling it a statement out of frustration. Congress leaders were heard saying that BJP is frustrated of the internal conflicts in the party and is issuing such statements fearing a defeat in the upcoming LS Polls.

  14. venkatesh says:

    RoW,

Even a staunch congress supporter like you cannot deny that MMS is indeed a watchman. I think AJ is not perfectly accurate and being a bit polite. The way I look at it is that MMS is not in the 15 member team (not from the lok Sabha) but since the captain is a bully is made to open the innings. No frustration from Ajs side just angst from the congress for nailing it on head.

  15. Jiggs says:

  25. shrirang says:

I think the more media criticises NaMo the better for BJP. Remember the state assembly elections. No doubt he won on his performance but this completely senseless media campaign against him only strengthened people’s resolve to bring him back to power. Let’s hope people in India emulate people in Gujrat.

  26. venkatesh says:

    RoW,

Dont insult the post of a PM by calling MMS a PM. He is a ‘Babu” who at best has a power of attorney to act like PM, after the decisions have been taken by the Italian lady. What humbug PM!! He was acclaimed for economic abilities right? He got an economy that was growing at 7 percent and had taken off, he fed water to the engine, raised rates when the rates should have been brought down, did zilch on economic reforms, spent55,000 odd crores which the CAG says is funny accounting and is probably siphoned off by NGOs (probably to swiss accounts and to fund the conversion campaign). No minister gives a hoot to what he says and you say he is one of the best PMs. Please be objective. He is no financial genius, in 1991 narasimha rao told him what to do and as a babu he obeyed and took the credit that rightfully belonged to narasimha rao. If you put Narasimha rao on the list, I would agree with you and probably say he was even better than Vajpayee. Rajiv Gandhi also was a decent PM. Indira ruined the economy, but was a strong leader. About Nehru, the less said the better.

Bhanu – Its obvious where the sympathies of the media lie. 1992 was an act done by hindus and it gives them that so called moral highground to mention it for another 1000 years. 1993 was committed by Dawood and why will they mention it? Their priorities are crystal clear that they want to take high moral ground and show their so called fraud secular credentials in every other way.

CPI, CPM split in Kerala, emergency meeting called in Delhi

In what could spell bad news for the Third Front, the CPI and the CPM on Friday split in the state of Kerala. The decision to part ways was
reportedly taken by the CPI, after talks to resolve the deadlock over the Ponnani seat failed.

CPI announced the decision to split and also they will reportedly contest in all 20 constituencies for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The CPI believes, “The CPM cannot even win one seat in Kerala without our support. The onus of the split in the state lies completely with the CPM.”

Following this split between the two parties in Kerala, the CPM called for an emergency meeting in New Delhi to discuss the situation.

Earlier, on March 10, finalisation of seat-sharing between Kerala’s ruling LDF and the coalition partners continued to be in a dead lock, with the CPI and JD(S) refusing to fall in line with the CPI-M’s move over Ponnani and Kozhikode seats.

CPI stood firm in its stand that there was no question of surrendering Ponnani for fielding a ‘common LDF independent’ there as a tactical move to mobilise the support of Muslim outfits opposed to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

  35. Yogesh says:

    Jiggsrao,

    Here it is -

Declare me PM candidate says Maya (Source ToI)

On March 15, Mayawati’s dinner table will serve as a battleground for deciding who will be the prime ministerial candidate of the newly-formed Third
Front. With a very small list to choose from, chances are, it will turn out to be a happy dinner. ( Watch )

With Chandrababu Naidu and H D Deve Gowda already having withdrawn from the race, the ball is clearly in Bahujan Samajwadi Party supremo Mayawati’s court.

So Mayawati has clearly conveyed her prime ministerial ambitions to the Third Front leaders and also set a deadline for it. She is hosting a party for the Third Front members on BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s birthday on March 15; and wants the PM candidate issue finalised by then.

At present, the Third Front comprises CPM, CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc, TDP, TRS, JD(S) and Bhajan Lal’s Haryana Janahit Party, was formally launched on Thursday. On Thursday, Mayawati gave the Third Front launch rally a miss and sent her representative instead.

Her representative at the rally at Tumkur near Bangalore and party general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra, said “It is the aim of the BSP to make Mayawati prime minister.”

Given this backdrop, the March 15 meeting assumes significance as the leadership issue will almost certainly be discussed although the Third Front has so far taken the line that the prime ministerial question would be addressed only after the Lok Sabha elections are over and results declared.

Sources in the JD(S), however, said the dinner meeting could discuss the modalities of the proposed ‘National Policy Document’ of the Front.

  39. Rajesh says:

Here’s something that is good news

Third Front not to project PM candidate: Bardhan
Amid BSP’s keenness to project Mayawati as a prime ministerial candidate, CPI said the Third Front would not name any leader for the
top post in the run-up to the elections.

“The Third Front will not project anyone as its Prime Ministerial candidate during electioneering,” CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told reporters here, a day after the Left and some regional parties joined hands to cobble up a third front as an alternative to combines led by Congress and BJP.

He said the question of Prime Minister would be taken into consideration only after the elections.

Bardhan’s remark assumes significance as it came a day after Mayawati’s senior representative S C Mishra said at the Third Front rally in Tumkur district in Karnataka that BSP’s objective was to make her the prime minister. “It is the aim of BSP to make Mayawati prime minister,” he had said.

On BJD’s participation in the Third Front, the CPI stalwart said he would meet BJD supremo and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and discuss the matter with him.

CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury had met Patnaik on March 8 in a bid to persuade him to join the Third Front, while JD-S leader H D Deve Gowda and Chandrababu Naidu of TDP had also spoken to the BJD supremo on the subject.

While leaders of the eight-party alliance were keen to see BJD on their platform after it snapped ties with BJP, the regional outfit, led by Patnaik, refrained from participating in the rally in Karnataka, keeping open its post-poll option.

“The BJD will not participate in any front before the elections though it will enter into seat-sharing arrangement with some parties, including the Left,” said party MP Pyari Mohan Mohapatra, considered the main strategist of BJD.

BJD, which agreed on seat-sharing with Left parties, NCP and JMM, wants to take a decision on its participation in the Third Front only after the elections, sources said

Sorry, guys any links and it goes straight to the moderation queue.

  43. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

Folks, the left are like limpets; they won’t break up like that, for power is what keeps these strange bedfellows together. Parleys are going on in hectic pace at Central level between CPM and CPI leaders and Karat has already instructed Pinarayi of the Lavlin fame to resolve the dispute. So it will be business as usual i.e. the kinky secularism. Ponnani is a muslim majority constituency where the imported Banatwala used to win. No one except a muslim candidate will be fielded by either Congress led UDF or CPM led LDF that is the extreme kind of secularism. Now when UDF will be fielding a Muslim league candidate, the LDF will be fielding somebody who has some affinity towards the fundamentalist outfits like PDP and NDF. Now some new face recommended by these fundamentalist outfits, and approved by the so called kinky secular commies will be fielded.

  44. NR says:

Yes KSV is right. This is the one issue on which Achuthanandan and worse Pinarayi hhave joined hands and I think its decision of state committee. Now Karat and Politburo will give directions to state committee and meet baardhan and resolve.

But nevertheless, it is a scoring point for BJP.

  45. NR says:

Guys media spin overtime as jaitley misses cental election committee meeting. Goes to say all is not well with jaitley and rajnath. They will use this issue to divide house.

  46. prasanna says:

Jaitley is making an huge strategic blunder by not contesting the Lok Sabha elections. He should position himself to elected as the next leader of opposition given that BJP is increasingly unlikely to form the next government( i would prefer BJP sitting out and watching the fun rather than attempting to cobble together a hotch potch post poll alliance)

Its pretty evident that only NaMo-Jaitley combine can revive the electoral fortunes of BJP.

    SS-BJP deal to be announced

Keep it coming, keep LKA smiling! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If you analyse it correctly, all the three developments today are to Congress/UPA’s advantage :-

    1. The CPI-CPM split only strengthens the Congress tally in Kerala (remember this spilt is happenning in a State where BJP is ziltch)
    2. The Mayawati ultimatum weeds out all the other PM aspirants in non-Congress/non-BJP parties. Makes sure neither SP nor NCP can ever form part of the 3rd Front. So they have no choice but to be apart of UPA..
    3. The BJP-SS tie-up closes the NCP-SS alliance – leaving NCP to UPA’s fold with no choice. Mayawati’s ultimatum also leaves Sharad pawar’s PM aspiration shattered !

Advani’s PM aspirations are anyway doomed – so the writing is on the wall !!

  48. RoW says:

Jaitley is smart enough to recognise that he does not want to be part of a losing team (BJP 2009) !

He hates Rajnath and while he respects LKA, but knows he is going to end up on the losing side. So he wants to distance himself from this election process as much as possible…

Read this article by Praful Bidwai, another BJP baiter.

    news.rediff.com/column/2009/mar/13/guest-advantage-no-one-in-elections.htm

Previously, they said UPA has advantage by 20-30 seats. After some days, advantage by 5-6 seats. Now NDA is out of choice because third front is taking NDA’s place but UPA also may not form government easily. As elections near somebody will say, NDA may have advantage but may not win. Then as elections are happening NDA has advantage by 1-2 seats but can go either way. After the elections we will see NDA government and then analyze what went wrong for third front and UPA. Ha ha ha…

  53. RoW says:

Neither does BalThacK want Pawar to become the PM nor does Pawar believe himself that he can become one ! Both are simply trying to negotiate harder for a better deal from BJP & Congress respectively !

It is quite simple if you can read between the line….

You are making several incisive points that unfortunately gets lost in outlandish Kangressi propaganda that you indulge- like defending the indefensible media which is running a venomous anti-BJP campaign.I am little disappointed that person who displays a lot of commonsense otherwise, unabashedely supports a undemocratic family enterprise that is singularly responsible for the India’s slow march to progress

Once i read a outrageous comment from you saying that BJP is anti-OBC,anti-Dalit,anti-Women,anti-humanity etc. Does it slip your attention that BJP is the party with maximum number of OBC/Dalit/ST MP’s and its entire powerbase in Hindutva states like Gujarat/MP/Karnataka comes from support it draws from intermediate castes. Most of their top leaders like Advani/Modi/Chauhan are not from traditional Upper class/Upper caste section of the society that BJP is alleged to represent. Its commie/Congress leadership that is typically from narrow caste/class groups.BJP leaders come through the ranks

I come from Bangalore part of the state which is getting”Talibanised” if you go by the left liberal pinki chaddi intelligenstia.Propaganda cannot get more malicious than this.Infact after a long time Karnataka is being governed decently.Come to Bangalore and see for yourself the evidence of progress-number of civic infrastructure projects that have been initiated after the advent of BJP goverment

BJP might be decimated in the coming elections (Urban electorate might be deserting it due to negative perception created by mischevious pink chaddi like campaigns spearheaded by the Christist infested Media ) .At the present juncture BJP could deeply flawed but its still the only party holds hope

  59. RoW says:

Differences between Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh and general secretary Arun Jaitley have erupted after Sudhanshu Mittal, who was formally appointed in charge of BJP political affairs in northeastern States here on Monday. However, those supporting the appointment pointed out that the formal announcement was made after consulting the prime ministerial candidate, L.K. Advani, who was more than happy with the “promising alliance” Mr. Mittal brought about.

Mr. Jaitley has been talking to party leaders, making it clear that he is unhappy with this development as he saw Mr. Mittal as “nothing but a wheeler-dealer,” a BJP leader told The Hindu

The simmering tensions between Mr. Rajnath Singh and Mr. Jaitley have more or less come out in the open, with Mr. Advani caught in the middle, not wanting to upset anything ahead of the polls – lest it jeopardises his PM ship !

in the toplist of 3 pm, of ROW rajiv gandhi is missing?????
does that mean rajiv gandhi was not good pm???

  61. Puneet says:

    @RoW,

    >>Advani’s PM aspirations are anyway doomed – so the writing is on the wall !!

Do you study in the Yogendra Yadav school of psephology? He seems to have a very simple algorithm for predicting election results -

    1) Pick a random number between what the Congress won the last time and the maximum seats in the state.
    2) Justify the generated number by talking about imagined divisions in the opposition and the fictitious developmental policies of the Congress. In case you run out of reasons, let Rajdeep Sardesai pitch in.
    3) Hide your frivolity by taking refuge in charts and graphs which go up for the congress and down for everyone else. Sound as serious as possible.
    3) Lather, rinse, repeat, for all states.

Voila! You have instantaneous electoral punditry, YY style. It looks like you are very much inspired by him. :-)

    Jiggs,

Dont get god to have mercy on us. We need to make sure the whole of India is angry at her and vote her out. Why bring god when we are to blame. Her Karma will take her down, of that I have no doubt. there is a manthan going on in modern day India and the congress metaphorically is the poison that is being produced with the churning. We need to find a “shiva’ to swallow it. Sooner or later it will happen!!!

just see how media is trying to confuse:

Modi not my heir apparent, declares Advani

but read full that advani reply was:
Asked by the Outlook magazine in an interview whether Modi was “standing above the other leaders of the second generation in the BJP” and if he was “heir apparent”, Advani replied, “No, I would not say so. Specially when we have string of chief ministers who have been performing so well.”

To a question as to whether the Gujarat Chief Minister was the most popular leader after him, Advani replied, “Why after me? He may be the most popular leader right now.”

“Justify the generated number by talking about imagined divisions in the opposition and the fictitious developmental policies of the Congress”

I remember during the Karnataka assembly edition of pseudo psephology aired in Sardesai channel, bearded prof came up with a new social construct called “Lower OBC” which apparently was titling the balance in favour of Kangress.

    RAHUL WATCH:
RAHUL GANDHI is a FARMER as per LOKSABHA website.
    news in THE HINDU

New Delhi (IANS): Never mind if Congress MP Rahul Gandhi holds an M Phil degree from Cambridge, he is actually a farmer! At least that’s the description of his profession on the Lok Sabha website.

The young and suave Congress general secretary has a degree in Development Economics from Trinity College, Cambridge University. Incidentally, the website misspells his profession as a “farmar”.

There seems near unanimity among election observers now that Congress is nowhere near scraping through finish line. A mixed-verdict come May ‘09, the ensuing chaos a la Gowda-Gujral era and we’ve a perfect recipe for a strong central govt. with strong leadership. ‘09 still is anybody’s guess but the next election seems getting clearer by the day.

A sharp focus on Narendra Modi in international media (contrast it with total absence of any profile on any Congress leader) shows which way the wind is blowing. That BJP benefits from third-front chaos is a fact proven by history. Add to it the split loyalty among the media between Congress and third-front, and you’ve an interesting tie at hand. May the best party win.

I think Pawar is dragging Sena to third class front. It will be good for BJP. Sena will be vanished and after third class front govt collapses, NCP will get vanished it is last chance for Pawar. Then MH is wide open for BJP. Cong is already down. Only MNS is remaining. But Raj will be another Bal.
