Rahul Gandhi’s half baked economics

For someone who claims a Masters in “Development Economics”, Rahul Gandhi’s troubles figuring basic “economics” raises many questions.

So we have the heir apparent in Gujarat, apparently for a show of strength.

Someone needs to remind him that he is more than 12 months late, in responding to his own party’s call on a “Narendra Modi versus Rahul Gandhi” showdown.

First for some valentine day’s levity, Rahul Gandhi style.

Speaking in Surat, Rahul  Gandhi said he didnt believe in Valentine’s Day. So all “pub going, loose and forwardpink chaddis can take themselves out of prospective consideration.

Moving on to topics more cerebral, it seems the spirit of enterprise in Surat got Rahul Gandhi talking up “Economics” only to expose some intellectual underdevelopment.

“On the one hand Gujarat Government has provided incentives of crores of rupees for Nano project but it has turned away from the diamond workers. It seems state government is not ready to spend money on poor,” Rahul said.

May we remind the “memory challenged” Rahul Gandhi what his preferred candidate for Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh had to say about the Tata’s industrial projects at the Tata Centenary Celebrations in Jamshedpur back in April of 2008.

I compliment my friend Ratan Tata, his colleagues Shri J.J. Irani and Shri Muthuraman, for their leadership and for their vision. Our country owes a great deal to such dynamic patriotic leaders of Indian business. They create wealth, they create employment, they create new capabilities and they create new possibilities for all our people.

That was not all Manmohan Singh’s speech further goes to expose the fallacy of Rahul Gandhi’s half baked economic theory that entitlements for Diamond Workers should come at the expense of incentives for the Nano

Today, as we enter a new phase of industrialization we need new centers that can create new jobs and promote new industries. Our government has come forward with a humane industrialization policy where the focus is on creating employment while at the same time ensuring that no section of the society is displaced or dispossessed by the processes of industrial development.

Unless of course Rahul Gandhi’s case is that Diamond Workers in Surat are being dispossed and displaced by a Nano Factory in Sanand, Rahul Gandhi’s contention fails his own Prime Minister’s economic philosophy. Perhaps he should consider going back to School to do something about those “under-developed” economic studies.

    Just back from a public meeting here at Bangalore. Occasion was inauguration of many developmental projects in our constituency. People seemed to connect with Yeddi. The ground was full, but as soon as Yeddi left , most people left with him! That is despite Ananth kumar, the sitting MP for the place, still on dias along with many other ministers. Local Congress MLA was full praise for Yeddi, and press folks were asking him about plans to jump ship to BJP!

    Karnataka is behaving somewhat like Gujarat, and have high expectations from Yeddi. He not doing great yet, but is seen as being better than anybody else before him.

    Just hoping it won’t lead to infighting in BJP, from people worried about losing their status in the party.

    Ajay – Thanks for the local perspective, delivered first hand. It will be great to have more such perspective from across India as we get into the election season.

  4. Prasanna says:

    Hi Ajay/Yoss

    I can vouch for developmental work that is happening at a very briskpace in Bangalore though not sure about the rest of the state.Several road widening projects,construction of underpasses/flyover are afoot in Bangalore.No wonder the “beautiful” Bangalorean TOI crowd who used to create a ruckus over woeful infrastructure are now shifting tracks and highlighting isolated issues of vandalism that is coming in way of their bacchalian merriment .CM ,though appears to be impatient and not so even tempered seems to be setting a good pace.There is always merit in trusting grassroot politician who come through the hard way .AbiDE initiative is also gaining traction

    Despite the machinations of that bumbling harmer,the BJP-JD(S) coalition was not that bad.That bufoon Adharam Singh’s government was probably the most catastrophic one for this great state.He might probably turn out to be Diggy Raja of Karnataka whose rule ensured that Kangress cannot return to power in foreseeable future

    Yeddy can take a leave out of Modi’s book and take on this hooligan Muthalik Gang .This media manufactured outrage does distract him from focussing on the task of governance.I think Sangh should not be seen associated anyway with this set of rascals who are clearly relishing the publicity provided by the Kangressi Media.

    Maybe “Talibanisation” is afterall not a bad idea(:

    @Umesh,
    No idea who you are. I am sure people on this board are very interested in this discussion.
    Folks, there is more under the Indian soil than we know off. Infact I will not be surprised that all the conflict zones in India is where the wealth is. Think Africa. This conflict is deliberately created to extract precious metals and stones. The hijacked and treacherous Indian Media never reports this so that people are constantly distracted. I had heard about Indias mineral wealth a few years ago but the proof is here. I am also certain that factions within both BJP and congress are involved in this large scale theft. Vedanta is nothing but chori.

    Please read the article posted below. I have highlighted the key point. Did we even know there were diamonds and our people are being forced to give up their land. Who are the Maoists and who is Salwa Judum. Let us draw parallels with the Congo and it is a carbon copy of what happened there. This is what is happening to India. False divisions and conflict being created to divide up this country in pieces and extract whatever the British missed out on during their rule. BJP should never have disinvested the mines. NEVER

    The government of Chhattisgarh tricked villagers into giving away their lands to international companies that are building mines to extract bauxite and diamonds in the region, Mrs. Sen said.

  6. Nishka says:

    Guys, Unfortunately we have very little from the foreign owned Indian media. I am sure that local papers report on this but the influential masses never get to read this. Below are excerpts from what is happening in Africa. SOUNDS very Familiar. Unless we stop this our beloved country will be no more. Seriously, this is above all the stuff the media reports. More on this later but see below

    Angola remains a war-torn country. The União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) rebels, backed by the CIA during the Cold War, and then targeted by the Clinton Administration, and then partnered with the “rebels” in Congo’s wars, are known to sell $100 million worth of diamonds annually. While participants in the Kimberley Process complained of UNITA’s criminality, they gave the “legitimate” Dos Santos government a sparkling bill of health. The Angola example shows how ‘black markets’ are created by predatory ‘white’ economies which perpetuate suffering and dispossession; diamond companies do not ‘ignore atrocities’ as the New York Times wrote in their December whitewash, they create and perpetuate them.

    Botswana is a classic example of a “peaceful” country engaged in diamond exploration: if any diamond in Africa were conflict free, one would think Botswana would be the place to find it. But the Botswana government has a long history of oppression against the San people—Bushmen of the Kalahari—and continues to force them off ancestral lands to make way for the world’s premier diamond cartel, De Beers/Anglo-American Corp.

    Over the past fifty years, top Israeli, American, French and Belgian diamond dealers have perpetrated conflict and injustice in Africa, fueled by and for diamonds. According to a report by the American Jewish Committee: after 1980 “Mossad agents, military emissaries, and a small group of private businessmen… replaced diplomats as Israel’s main interlocutors with African leaders and political (mainly opposition) groups.” The report cites rising involvement of private defense and security interests, especially in Angola, DRC and Central Africa Republic, since 1992. 42

    @Umesh,
    First create/sustain a problem and then swoop in to repair it. So Vedanta is giving the tribvals a pittance to get them out of the condiion our corrupt politicians and originally the brit traders let them to.
    But what they are getting is a microscopic fraction of what their land is worth. This is their land, our land. And we Indians should be equal beneficiaries not the politicians in Delhi (by the way Anil Agarwal is very chummy with Sonia Gandhi) or the wealthy families in the west who have always looted India.

  8. Umesh says:

    @Nishka,
    I’ve many armchair environbmental types in my state. The reality is quite different on the ground. I still suggest to you. Visit these places again.

    You should realise, this complete bandwagon on poverty is there to promote conversions indirectly. But, it is your opinion.

    I leave the last word to you. It is quite difficult to argue with a convinced person, which, I’m sure you are..

    I would also add, that, I suspect your leanings. Particularly, your anti-American posts at time.

    Cheers.

  9. Raaj says:

    Guys, All said and done, Congress is going to win good number of seats in Lok Sabha too in Delhi unless there is any major goof up before election. People have trust in Shiela Dikshit and now that all dissidence has gone after her win, she is free to field her people and they definitely have good chance.

    Though it donot matter much vis-a-vis number of seat Delhi have for Lok Sabha, but it certainly has the morale factor.

    BJP is in shambles here. I see the morale of workers too low to make any surprises.

    THEN WAT WILL HAPPEN TO “SECULARISM”
    AT THIS PACE ONE DAY ONLY “CONGRESS” WILL REMAIN “SECULAR”

  11. Nishka says:

    @Umesh,
    Bit of a hurry to label me a communist are you?
    Yes, on poverty – I guess if someone finds oil on your land and throws you a bone you will be happy.
    As for the missionaries. These hyenas are in for the same game. Why do you think they are targetting the mineral rich regions first. And we give them fuel by taking tribal land by force. The whole Narmada hoolahooop where people were displaced was a missionary fest.

    “When the Missionaries arrived, the Africans had the Land and the Missionaries had the Bible. They taught us how to pray with our eyes closed. When we opened them, they had the land and we had the Bible.”[

    Indians would do well to go away from this mai-baap sarkari way of thinking that the government should solve their problems especially economic ones. Y, it’d be great if you can do a write-up on what was the economic system (not the hogwash in our CBSE textbooks that glorifies Marxism) before the Mughal dynasty. Broadly was it socialistic or capitalistic or was it governed by some other strict rules? When was currency first used? What was the import export mix like? How was trade done between kingdoms? How it changed under the Mughals (if at all it did). How it then changed under the British.

    I think BJP in general (probably due to its Bania nexus LOL) has a good idea with “Gandhian socialism” which if I understand correctly is much more connected to free market capitalism than Nehru’s Fabian socialism with a “top-down” approach. But then you have Russified socialists like Gurumurthy and trade unions like Mazdoor Sangh from RSS also in BJP. Hope the latter are kept in check by the former.
