Bravo Arun Poorie

Offstumped kudos to Arun Poorie of India Today for coming out in the open finally and demonstrating the Intellectual Clarity and Moral Certitude expected of an Industry Leader and Opinion Maker in calling the attacks on Mumbai for what they were and resolving to sponsor a sustained campaign for action.

In the interest of getting action and building public opinion on a sustained basis, the India Today Group has pledged to use all its media platforms to keep this issue in the public consciousness till the Government delivers on its promises. For this, we have launched a movement titled ‘Declare War on Terror’ which is the subject of this special issue.

Also, we will be starting a ‘Declare War on Terror’ forum under the aegis of our non-profit foundation CARE TODAY, which will carry on the movement even after the Mumbai terror attacks have vanished from the headlines. This forum will push for change in policy and law. It will study and present detailed proposals for upgradation of our anti-terror institutions. It will serve as a watchdog body to demand efficiency, governance and alertness from our civil administration. It will ensure that the heroes in this war are honoured. It will, through debate and discussion, try and build a national consensus on this issue. Above all, it will not allow the issue of terrorism to fade away from the public domain and the national agenda.

Offstumped extends its wholehearted support to the India Today Group in its “Declare War on Terror” movement and forum.

Every Indian is concerned with the constant shadow of Terrorism on India. “Declare war on Terrorism” and continue with it till we win and the entire menace is completely annihilated. Perhaps, we may have to destroy the evil nation called Pakistan. If matters come to that, so be it. We want that our government “Declares a war” on terrorism to Win.

    No lessons learnt in Mumbai

On Wednesday the Mumbai police found 8 kg of RDX at the CST. It was lying among unclaimed baggage of victims. If the police is to be believed they found it when they were locating the luggage of a victim for a relative. It is more likely that they stumbled on pilferers or rather pilferers brought them to the bags. Either way it says a lot about the efficiency of the system.
Across CST in at the state government headquarters Mantralaya the politicians too have learnt no lessons. The NCP asked its deputy chief minister RR Patil to quit on Monday [Never mind the spin of conscience. Sharad Pawar simply pulled a fast one on Congress forcing them to sack Vilasrao Deshmukh] and the Congress sacked Deshmukh late on Wednesday night. In effect the state and more particularly wounded Mumbai was left without leadership.

On the same India Today site, here is a Q&A:

Q: “I am glad that you are safe. Was it right for TV channels to identify Hemant Karkare? That may have led him to be targeted. The channels also aired that the Hindustan Unilever team was at the Taj. Shouldn’t the media have shown some discretion?”

Answer by Prabhu Chawla: “The media was doing its job and none of us was told by any responsible person to hold back any information.”

Does that mean media needs to be told like a 3 year old child what to do & not? Can they not understand the seriousness of the situation and exert self-restraint? If senior journos like him give such answers, how can we expect better from others?

Toothless leaders turn tough nation into soft state
    By M J Akbar | November 30, 2008

    http://www.mjakbar.org/siegewithin.htm

Does it need grief to unite us? Where was Raj Thackeray when anonymous heroes from across the nation saved Mumbai from rabid vultures? Why did he not issue a diktat that he did not want any Bihari or Haryanvi or Malayali commando to save Mumbai?

India belongs to Mumbai since Mumbai belongs to India; the two need each other. The Maharashtra government looked hopelessly helpless before an invasion propelled by Pakistanis and navigated by a local, subversive fifth column.

Perhaps the low moment came around 8.30 on Thursday morning. While flames, gunfire, chaos mingled with shock a spokesman for the state government told CNN that the “situation is under control”. Yes, if you live in Somalia.

Hidden under grime and neglect, perhaps there is a little Somalia within Mumbai, waiting to burst out and infect the body politic. This sinewy, seamless nether world is nourished by the “black economy”, and has contempt for authority since it feeds, twice a day, the grubby hand of a policeman. Organized crime requires both sophisticated management and corrupt law enforcement agencies.

The underworld does not live in isolation; smuggling is a multinational enterprise. Once it was gold; today it is drugs. Only the naïve are aghast at the thought that ships from Karachi are landing in Mumbai. Each day ships are being loaded in Sindh with street-ready drugs from Afghanistan for the lucrative markets of rising India. Do the stars of Bollywood, the money-shifters of Dalal Street, the dolled up celebrities of Mumbai’s many hills — indeed, from the wealth bracket of many of the guests at Taj on Wednesday night — never ask how their hallucinatory puff has reached them?

The Mumbai mafia, with support from the police-politician partnership, has brought this puff to your party — via Pakistan.

There is a strong Muslim element in the Mumbai mafia. Bereft of either loyalty or morality, it can be easily lured into fantasies of revenge by its contacts in Karachi. Aggression is a psychological necessity of this trade, so the offer of havoc has the lure of a lethal snake. It lives in a unique mental and economic zone, different from the rest of India as well as India’s largely impoverished Muslims.

The initial reaction of some Indian Muslims to Mumbai was denial, a manifestation of their fear of retribution by both the state and the people. Some theories coasting on the net were particularly stupid. The paradox of fear is evident in contradictory manifestations: at one level, an urgent desire to find evidence of conspiracy by either the Mossad or Hindutva elements; at another level, to retreat into the comfort zone of familiar folly, like hope for security from the party that has betrayed them most often. The community will not be able to recognize necessary truths, both within and without, unless it can rub fear out of its eyes.

The most significant part of the outrage should not be obscured by the drama of events. Hypnotized by attack, we should not become oblivious of defence. We have been defeated by incompetent governance, both in Mumbai and Delhi. Facts will take more time to emerge. But perhaps up to 60 men hit nine targets in coordinated waves. This could not have happened without months of planning. Resources — weapons, rations, money — were mobilized; a small army trained across two countries; targets studied, routes finalized, transport organized, sleeper cells put in place. We learn that terrorists may have been living at the Taj for days, ferrying arms into what was surely turned into a war-room. Men arrived by sea, linked up with compatriots on land and launched multiple attacks. This must have involved hundreds at the planning stage, and the massive infrastructure of government discovered nothing. Where was the police? Where was the Anti-Terrorist Squad? Its chief, Hemant Karkare (undoubtedly a very brave officer, who lost his life in the battles that raged through the night) apparently received a death threat from Pune a few days before the mayhem but his own unit did not bother: they were all busy playing games on behalf of political masters. Complacence and politics gave the terrorists more protection than silence or deception could.

Terrorists may have a religion but death has none. In the first roll-call of death issued by the JJ Hospital, the name next to Karkare was that of Mastan Qureshi. There were six Hindus, four Muslims and two foreigners, presumably Christians, on that list.

Indians are tough. We have fought off Muslim terrorists in Kashmir, Sikh terrorists in Pun jab, Christian terrorists in Nagaland, and Hindu terrorists in Assam and across the country (the Naxalites). But ineffectual leadership turning a tough nation into a soft state. We should have been world leaders in the war against terrorists, for no nation has more experience Instead we are wallowing in the complacent de spair of a continual victim.

Some three years ago, Dr Manmohan Singh told George Bush that there were no terrorists among Indian Muslims. Perhaps he was unaware of the 1993 Mumbai bombings. Perhaps he wanted to please two constituencies: Bush, who needed a certificate for his view that democracy was the cure for all evil; and local Muslims, who were not being given jobs but could always be offered the consolation prize of a pat on the back.

Dr Singh certainly did not fool any terrorists. The Lashkar-e-Taiba might even have interpreted such self-congratulation as a challenge.

I am proud of being an Indian Muslim. Like any Indian, I am angry, frustrated and depressed I am angry at the rabid dogs of war. I am frustrated by the tone-deaf impotence of government. I am depressed at the damage being done to my India.

The Indian English Media and the way forward TRPwise!

The MSM in India has been obsessed with college level isms/axioms like secularism, rationalism, communism, socialism. They have not grown out of it and hence the problem with TRPs and earnings. The upper middle class which is their target consumer market is clearly ritualistic and caste oriented. In an ironic way the Sirdesais and Srinivasans may find a more willing/believing audience for their theories in Kolivada than Malabar Hill.

I get a feeling that the ownership is not too amused with the ROI and hence the perceptible leaning to the right of centre in the media. The Islamic Terror in Bombay has provided the window to get out of the imbroglio. At long last these dimwits have understood that their target market consult astrologers, seek magical favours from the Babas, keep mannats, would never approve marrying outside their caste[let alone religion] and in any case “Kyon ki..” is their entertainment!
Congress was a good party because it had the charming Nehrus. But to put up with Lallo[ except as a side kick jester ] et al is asking too much. Hence the admiration for Modi, Jaitley [ Uma is a definite no no].Tambram likes Jaya despite the Shankaracharya episode because she is cool and articulate.
Have the politicians got on this? Yes. Sule on TV yesterday is a reflection on how the crafty Pawars have got it right.
To get the perspectice, can one visualise the US MSM bat for the blacks, bash Christianity and support the commies.

Today I was watching an interview of SRK by Sardesai on CNN-IBN. The usual blah blah viz. No religion supports terrorism. But I just want an answer. Why most of the terrorists are Muslims. Wherever there are muslims, there are unrests and terrorism. Why don’t they try to reform the religion to which they belong rather than issuing a ROP certificate.

See what they offer to UK and to other countries which profess secularism. “We will discriminate on faith and demanded non-muslims to wear signs etc. etc., ” which is directly the result of religious teachings. I have a request, please reform and then preach.

    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/60771/Terror-cops-fear-Mumbai-attack-in-UK/
TERROR COPS FEAR ‘MUMBAI ATTACK’ IN UK

RANTING Anjem Choudary launched an astonishing anti-British tirade as terror experts warned yesterday of a Mumbai-style massacre in Britain.

The hate preacher called for apartheid in the UK just days after backing the killers in India. And his supporters threatened to unleash “blood on the streets”.

Experts said the chance of a terror attack here has increased since last week’s gun rampage in Mumbai left nearly 200 dead.

Choudary, 41, spoke at a packed public meeting called “Not So Great Britain”.

It was held at a council-owned arts centre in Southall, Middlesex, by Islam4UK.com – a website he founded with banned hate preacher Omar Bakri Mohammad.

    Filthy
He branded Britain “filthy”, accused children of being “prostitutes” and demanded non-Muslims wear signs like the Nazis forced on the Jews in WWII.

Crazed Choudary said: “In Britain there are 230 rapes every day, that’s 10 per hour. Supermarkets are selling poles for little children so they can become prostitutes when they grow up. There’s no comparison between our way of life and theirs.

“In an Islamic state, non-Muslims will have to wear a sign to show what they are – it should say Kaffir. We won’t discriminate on height, race or appearance but we will discriminate on faith.” Earlier, Bakri spoke via videophone from Lebanon.

Meanwhile, one of Choudary’s henchmen at Islam4UK, which has close links to banned group al-Muhajiroun, warned: “You will know when the Muslims have ignited an insurrection when there is blood on the streets of London and New York like there is blood on the streets of Fallujah and Mumbai.”

MP Patrick Mercer, the chairman of the Commons counter-terrorism committee, warned: “What can happen in Mumbai can just as well happen in Manchester or Birmingham.

“This style of attack is something we would find very difficult to deal with.”

    * Last week 99 per cent of Daily Star readers called for Choudary to be booted out of Britain and police pledged to crack down on his rants.

Dream on, king iyer. India MSM will self-destruct before it will reform. The Bakhas and Sardesais may give you the impression that they are only a decade old phenomenon, but you couldn’t be more mistaken. We’re talking of decades of conditioning here. Right up to the 90’s, information could be easily controlled and public opinion could be moulded, so these media luminaries put on their fineries and paraded as gentlemen. (I recall how many of us, including yours truly, admired the bigot Prannoy Roy in early 90’s. We didn’t know better. He was so smooth.) Thanks to internet, mobile phones, and a more connected world, uncontrolled sources of information have proliferated, putting an end to “mainstream” media’s monopoly. Adversity brings out the true nature of people, and it is brining out the true nature of Indian media. It was always like this, and will always be, till at least the “alternative” becomes “mainstream”.

  21. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

What a mockery! They are making Chhagan Bhujbal as Dy. CM and Home Minister of Maharashtra. Read on the report in Stateman:

    Fake war on terror!

    Rajinder Puri
The government’s assurances about fighting terrorism became laughable after Mr Chhagan Bhujbal was appointed the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra. Mr Bhujbal had to resign from the government previously because of alleged links to Abdul Karim Telgi who was the front man of the Rs 30,000 crores stamp paper scam. The police acknowledged that there was a huge nationwide network behind the scam. Police also claimed that part of the money generated in the scam reached terrorist outfits operating inside India.
There is considerable official attention being paid to plans for securing airways, seaways, markets and important city centres. That is very welcome. But it is far from being adequate to carry out any serious war against terrorism. What policy planners seem to overlook is that jihaadis and terrorists may carry out spectacular terrorist strikes. They are incapable by themselves of waging a full scale terror war. And what India must prepare for is to face full scale unrestricted warfare. The aim of those who direct the terrorists is not just to demoralise the nation. It is to destroy it as a rising power.
It should be noted that one possible effect of the attack on Mumbai could be to inhibit foreign investment from coming into the country. After the global economic meltdown this factor assumes crucial importance. It should be considered that in addition to possible future terrorist strikes against important centres of foreign investment such as Bangalore, the enemy could strike in an altogether different way to destroy India’s economy.
For instance, it has been estimated by some that by 2010 high quality fake currency indistinguishable from genuine notes could flood the Indian market. In addition to destabilising the nation’s security through terrorist strikes, the nation’s economy could be crippled through a huge dose of fake currency. Is the government alert to this danger? The appointment of Mr Chhagan Bhujbal as Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister who will oversee affairs in India’s financial capital does not inspire confidence in either the government’s judgment or its intention.

  22. Jiggs says:

I dont care a fig leaf of the measures this government has introduced. To attack Pakistan they need political will, which the congress lacks. Alaready, Amar Singh has started his machinations to launch a SECULAR front, his accussation this time is that Congress is not involving them in decisions.

NSG says media got in the way, wants guidelines

Sources told The Indian Express that the force is particularly miffed with the way its operations at Nariman House were broadcast live. Questions are being raised over the way Havaldar Gajender Singh fell to a terrorist’s bullet at Nariman House. “TV broadcast our commandos landing from a helicopter on the roof over Nariman House. By the time our men landed and started taking positions, the terrorists were already waiting for them and opened fire,” an NSG official said.

  24. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

The visual media put the lives of our brave commandos, police personnel etc., at risk by continuously live telecasting details of the entire operation. Accordingly the terrorists and their masters across the border could plan their operation. The visual media should be hauled up along with the terrorists and made to answer for their callous behaviour, if not, complicity.

I certainly hope you’re right. My skepticism remains resolute, however. In NDTV’s case (Barkha’s employer), the major shareholding is held by the likes of Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy. They’re the owners. And their seed capital for mounting this media trojan vehicle likely comes from dubious phoren sources. So no, I don’t see them changing stripes just yet. Sure, they’ll do tactical retreats and test the waters every no and then, overdose the janta with non-news distractions like kirket-bollywood-aarushi etc and get back to their old game of ever so subtly paint their POV as the inevitably ‘reasonable’ one.
