Praveen Swami lets the cat out of the bag

The mystery of so called un-Hindu Terrorism may finally be unmasked with India’s numero uno Journo on all things letting the cat out of the bag, willingly or unwittingly, well we may have to leave that to his memoirs to settle.

Two stories appeared in the Hindu today by Praveen Swami, between the two of which one can easily infer the undisputable facts and the myth making conspiracy that underlies the Malegaon saga.

In the first story titled “Politics helps Hindutva Terrorists” appearing on the front page Praveen Swami blows 2 myths while not saying so in words.

Myth #1 – There is an Organized Terror Outfit behind Malegaon

First Praveen Swami blows the that there is an organized terror outfit behind this saga when he names the two vigilante individuals from Madhya Pradesh as having been planning anti-Muslim bombings as early as 2002.

In December 2002, police in Madhya Pradesh discovered an improvised explosive device at Bhopal?s railway station. A second IED was found exactly a year later in Bhopal?s Lamba Khera neighbourhood. Both devices were made with commercial TNT cased in a four-inch tube-well pipe, linked to a detonator controlled both by a cell phone and a quartz alarm clock.

Madhya Pradesh police, the sources said, soon developed information linking the attempted bombings to local Hindutva activists, Ramnarayan Kalsangram and Sunil Joshi.

So how exactly does he blow the myth of an organized outfit ?

By confirming for the first time that these vigilantes have been at it from 2002. Abhinav Bharat was formed only in 2006.

Myth #2 – BJP or Sangh Parivar have been sheltering the accused

Praveen Swami for all his reputation as an ace anti-terror journalist must be embarrased by either his reluctance or N. Ram’s editorial censorship in producing an article that alleges Political Pressure allowed the 2 vigilantes to walk free but is stunningly silent in highlighting that in the year 2002 it was the Congress Government of Digvijay Singh that let the vigilantes walk free and not the BJP.

In fact so embarassing is this silence that Praveen Swami cares to mention Digivijay Singh’s repeated assertions that he had proof of bomb making while not even bothering to ask a fundamental question

If Mr. Singh’s Government had this evidence as early back as in 2002 why did it allow them to walk free ?

Are Mr. Singh’s repeated assertions a belated attempt at assuaging guilt ?

In the second story titled “Dead Man’s Tale holds key to Hindutva Terror secrets“, Praveen Swami while not saying it in as many words makes it clear that the Malegaon investigations are now no longer about these 2 vigilantes but a desperate attempt at casting a wider net.

But the investigation is now running into a brick wall: its principal suspect is dead. Dewas-based Hindutva activist Sunil Joshi, who police believe could have organised the 2007 bombings, was murdered just before New Year?s eve. Joshi?s supporters claim he was assassinated by the Students Islamic Movement of India; police suspect other Abhinav Bharat members killed their commander in a dispute over funds.

Maharashtra Police officials say the testimony of a witness ? whose identity has been withheld for his protection ?links Joshi to the Samjhauta Express attack.

In fact the level of detail in Praveen Swami’s piece makes it clear that while all those arrested and insinuated in the Malegaon episode may have had partial knowledge of the vigilante’s activities that was about the extent to which they were involved as far as all the evidence collected to date suggests.

Clearly a group of individuals with mere knowledge of terrorist activities dont make for good copy or politics. Hence this attempt at probing deep into their background and establishing tertiary links to individuals associated with the VHP.

Maharashtra Police sources said that, according to the witness, the call was made by Gujarat-based Hindu-nationalist leader Jatin Chatterjee. Mr. Chatterjee ? widely known in southern Gujarat by his clerical alias, Swami Asimanand ? runs the controversial Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, which operates a Hindu-proselytisation programme targeting adivasis in southern Gujarat.

Praveen Swami does not leave us in doubt on the motive behind this attempt at establishing tertiary links to the VHP when he drops this hint in the opening sentence of his piece

For the past fortnight, the Maharashtra Police have been poised on the edge of unravelling what could prove to be among the most significant counter-terrorism investigations since the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

The reference to Gandhi Assassination is code to imply that while Kalsangram and Joshi may have acted as vigilantes no different from a Godse, the Congress is unwilling to go public with that. Doing so would only bring the blame back to its door step on why Digvijay Singh let them go free in 2002. Hence the need for preparing the grounds to establish a conspiracy and use that as an excuse potentially to ban the Bajrang Dal or the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to turn the heat on the BJP and Sangh Parivar while communalising the vote.

So that friends is how Praveen Swami lets the Cat out of the Bag for us while not saying so much in as many words perhaps at the insistence of his sources or perhaps at the behest of editorial considerations.

Either way this plays out we are headed for a nasty political season and that is a grim implication for this nation.

    I agree with this analysis.

As I stated since the very beginning (Swapan Dasgupta also hinted in his Sunday Column in the Pioneer): target is some Hindutva Leader. In this case, its Swami Asimananad.

Classic case- Hindus and Muslims are pitted against each other, while missionaries are going all out for conversion. One of the Seer who opposed them in Kandhamal was killed. Here is the next one- malign publicly.

Will Press, people understand this? Don’t know. Now, it all depends on Hindu Seers, Dharmic leaders how united they become and strongly face this challenge.

  2. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

Hinduism is under massive attack from political conspiracy

This can be saved only when Ramakrishna Mission to Baba Ramdeb to Sri Sri to…– All sects, saints, seers come united and hit the street.

Saving grace is, this Govt is fully exposed who question Rama’s existance, almost broke Rama Sethu. And Kashmir is burning.

  3. arjun says:

What is the need to compare this to gandhi’s murder? Ridiculous.. Country has witnessed massive terror attacks by Jihadi elements and it is quite natural to expect some nut cases to react this way.

  4. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

@Arjun>>What is the need to compare this to gandhi’s murder?

Once this stupid act of Godse was responsible for banishment of Hindu right for 30 years.

Now, Psuedos think history will repeat itself- little they realize India moved on, massive social change took place, religious scene also underwent drastic change. Moreover, Kashmir is burning, we are facing daily terror. Ayodhya happened. So also Shahbanu. Modi became most successful CPIM. But they are hoping against hope ! This is their strategy to get Muslim Vote as well as abuse Hindutva.

I think it will boomerang- as had it been successful, CPIM (the prime mover behind this taliban p-secularism) would have been #1 party in India. Before every election, they raise these bogey.

    Tatha,
The issue is that there has been a spate of Jihadi bombings in the country. A lot of Hindus feel that even if some Hindu nutcases did the bombing, it is ok since the govt is not doing anything to curb it.

Secondly, Jihadi terrorists will not go away just because ATS has caught some Hindus. There will be more Jihadi attacks. Christian evnagelism is a another issue against which Hindu opinion has solidified.

Thirdly, the secular forces are discredited now for being anti Hindu. That was not the case in 1948. Nehru was a towering leader at that point but right now who is his counterpart.

So, I just cannot see how the commies think this will set hindutva back.

  7. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

Arjun: I agree with ur post #6. But psuedos hope against hope. What can you say?

The world is seeing a massive rise of identity- Secularism is now all but discarded even in Europe from where it was imported. Xtian rightwing has become massive powerful all over the western world. HINDUTVA REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL RECULTURIZATION MOVEMENT/EFFORT OF LAST 40 YEARS

But that’s what Taliban CPIM thinks. Now, its being followed by Sonia.

  8. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

Look at Nehru’s photo closely- he did NOT have to wear Hindu Symbols like Tilak on the forehead, or tie red-thread in his hands, as is being done since the days of Indira, Rajiv, Sonia, or Rahul. Look at Lalu, Paswan too.

Also, our neighbors got changed- Kashmir is now fully purged of Hindus. Bangladesh is sending terrorists to India. Assam is burning on and off.

  9. arjun says:

Infact, this issue can be used to BJP’s advantage. A massive campaign by Sangh Parivar will help the BJP. Having said that these hindu nut cases should be curbed if they are genuinely involved.

  10. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

    Sanjeev @5

Mainstream media protected CPIM by not giving coverage of Tapasi Murder it deserved.

Even yesterday, 21 CPIM MEMBERS HAVE BEEN GIVEN LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR KILLING A MUSLIM GUY IN ARAMBAGH! Media is never even handed.

  11. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

    Arjun @9: Yes.

I think, if ALL Hindu leaders, from RK Mission to Baba Ramdeb, to Sri Sri … EVERY SECT, GURU, SADHVI– all become united and hit the street, it cause massive uproar. Wll it happen? Lets see.

After all Sri Golwalkarji was a monk of RK Mission.

  12. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

It seems some hidden enemy is taking revenge on hindus for the set back in the conversion agenda after the brutal murder of the Swamiji and his disciples in Kandhamal. They are going against the hindu sadhvis, sadhus etc., in an orchestrated attempt to malign anybody connected to the word “hindu”. In the top echelon of power in India the word hindu and hindus, it seems, have become anathema.

There used to be a lone voice to speak up against the establishment The Indian Express under Ramnath Goenka. Now they too have chosen to toe the line of the establishment.

They completely sideline the ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits but tom tom about the post Godhra riots in Gujarat. They completely ignore the influx of Bangladeshi illegal immigrants. They don’t bother to send back those persons who have gone missing deliberately. They deliberately ignore the seditious speeches of the so called secular right activists in favour of the separatists. They don’t bother about the many serial bombings in various cities, the last being in Assam where innocents in hundreds were killed. The fight for the rights of Hussain, but toe the anti-hindu rhetoric that Lord Rama and Ramayana are myths.

Now they want to establish that hindus are terrorists. When jehadi terrorists from SIMI, IM etc., get outside help these seculars are not bothered. But to malignthe hindus the very same seculars try to link them even with SIMI. That is the worst thing anybody can do to a Hindu – alleging association with a terrorist anti-national organisation which wants to establish an Islamic nation. Perhaps a secular person can very well do it, but no true hindu worth his salt can ever imagine to have any truck with such outfits. I have a strong doubt that forces inimical to hindus and India are at work. They have got great resources and can easily purchase people to push pen for them and do their dirty PRO work. There is attack on hindus from inside and outside. The hidden hands do the inside work and and the pen pushers do the PRO work maligning the hindus. Both of them get support from the seculars in UPA and elsewhere.

We can, therefore, expect much more attack mounted on hindus in the coming days.

  13. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

Another aspect will play an important role- economic turmoil. As economy is going down, people loosing job, educated jobless is growing- this anger shd be channelized against psuedos who are destroying indian economy. doling out 100,000s of crores to minorities.

  14. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

Also, note Praveen Swami, wrote 100s of times, justifying Jehadi terrorism against India because of ‘riots’. Here he completely forgets that Hindus have been wholesome purged in Kashmir, pak, Bangladesh, and we are seeing 100s of terror blasts all over India.

What a way to further ’secular’ agenda – little doubt Hindutva is growing from strength to strength.

Off topic but a nice read abt radical islam

  16. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

Folks- Yechuri is babbling on two things these days. We need to arm us intellectually on those.

One is: Guru Golwalkar’s book – its not his book, he translated it, and also stopped its further edition well before WWII. Sudhin Kulkarni;s article talks about that.

Second is: Shri BS Moonje. There are few info on him available in the Wiki. His close association with Lokmanya Tilak, his role as founding member of IMA, Dehradoon are really great.

Guess, we need a detailed articleon Shri Moonje- as Sudhin Kulkarni wrote about double speak on Golwalkarji.

    Any takers?

  17. KSV SUBRAMANIAN says:

It is time we asked the question whether hindus are a majority in India. When election time comes they talk of Muslims+Yadav, Muslims+dalits, Muslims+KHAM, Christian+Muslims+OBCs, etc., etc., Still they claim to be seculars, that is the funniest part. The put up only persons belonging to particular caste, where such particular caste or religion is in majority. Still they claim to be secular and others are communal. You go through any paper, any main stream news channel, during the election time the analysis is based on religion, caste, community etc., Still they are secular !!! Or is it the fact that in the media the pen pushers decide who is secular and who is communal.

There are no hindus in India. There are Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Yadavs, Patels, Banias, Nairs, Namboodiris, OBCs, MBCs, Dalits, Tribals and many many others who do not adhere to one set of scriptures but follow many many set of scriptures, gods, goddesses, etc. etc., It is time every caste, community, clan claim minority status as during election time the seculars calculate the chances of winning candidate as above. For the purpose of claiming minority, effectively there is no hindu religion. Otherwise the authorities should promulgate a law banning referring to any caste, community in public. If any one discusses or mentions caste (Other than scheduled caste and Tribe as per our constitution) the penalty should be permanent confinement in prison. But the pen pushers may lose their job, for they won’t have any mirage to chase.

Unless the state ushers in secularism in letter and spirit wherein the state and its arms keeps away from religion and religious affairs and for the purpose of equality an equal opporunity commission is appointed so that it does not involve mention of any religion or caste. Religion should be kept as strictly personal affair and state should leave religion to the people. If this is observed in letter and spirit, many ills affecting our country will automatically evaporate.

  19. kumar says:

Okay..I am afraid my view is a little contrarian to the majority of our friends here.

1.Praveen Swami is suggesting that whilst the blasts in public places are done by the jihadi elements, the blasts in Muslim concentrated areas (Mecca Masjid in Hyd, Ajmeri Sharif, Samjhauta Express, Malegaon etc) are done by a network of Hindu activists. This idea that certain Hindu vigilantes planned and executed the blasts in Muslim areas, sounds logical to me.

2.Praveen also says that Digvijay Singh Govt allowed the investigations into Hindu vigilantes to stall and the people go scot free. What could be the political benefit for Diggy here? Has the Congress just created a file and hoarded the evidence to use it for a rainy day (such as today)? Or has the MP police sympathised with the Hindu vigilantes and did not do a good job of capturing evidence?

3.If the Maha ATS is running into a brick wall due to lack of evidence and witnesses, and the available evidence is only based on hearsay (even the eye witness has also heard a call between a swami and the army officer), it can be assumed that this investigation will run aground, and the suspects will be acquitted after a sufficiently legthy trial.

But enough mud will stick to the Hindutva forces and the neutral voters will be wary of voting BJP, if the BJP makes it a poll issue.

That the BJP has already made it a poll issue for the current assembly elections is clear. It may or may not pay them dividends.

What will be interesting is whether the BJP and the larger Sangh Parivar take up this issue for the LS elections.Opinion will be divided within the BJP about this.On the one hand, this issue could prove to be a consolidating force for Hindu vote bank and lead them to power. On the other hand, if the charges stick and the Col. and Sadhvi go to jail, the largely moderate Hindu voters may shy away from voting BJP, for supporting convicted terrorists.

The Congress is the real gainer here because it has succeeded in creating a dilemma for BJP and diluting BJP’s attack on UPA for inefficiency in curbing terror. It has also succeeded in building some burnt bridges with the Muslim voters.Even the CPM may not be averse to supporting Congress after the polls, with the aim to prevent the communal, and fascist BJP out of power. Regional parties who may have supported the BJP will be scared of losing the Muslim and the moderate Hindu vote.

Ok..enough of gloomy forebodings. Will post my solution too..(contd).

  20. kumar says:

    (contd).

So, I feel strongly that it is time for NaMo to take charge of the BJP and lead the party in the next elections.LKA and Rajnath seem unable to match the Congress strategies and also seem to lack real conviction on the BJP tactics.

Whether we win or lose, if NaMo is in charge now, we will atleast know that BJP has tried its best. A core team comprising NaMo, Jaitley, Shourie and others should chalkout the plan and execute it.

The BJP could wait for the results of the Assembly elections now, and then take a call on this aspect.

My guess (I hope I am proved totally wrong) is that BJP will not do as well as it is hoping to in these assembly elections. These elections will be like a drawn Test match. The LS elections will be the decider and the BJP will do well to project its best player on to the centre stage.

  21. arjun says:

kumar, you have to take into account the perception that Congress was soft on terror when jihadi elements were invloved but is showing a lot of enthusiasm when Hindus are invloved.

Elections will be decided not solely on the issue of terror but also other issues such economy, jobs , inflation etc.

I have my doubts if the people who vote for BJP would switch to Congress just for this.

  22. [...] Praveen Swami writing in The Hindu has glossed over what is an explosive fact. [...]

  23. reason says:

In a way we must be thankful to the writers of this script at Maharashtra ATS, for getting Advaniji back to us. There was a scathing editorial in the Hindu today and we should be thankful some more for those mercies.

There was a pioneer piece that said one of the targets of this operation is a RSS in charge in kashmir.

Praveen Swami clearly identifies another target – Swami Asimanand and the movement in Dangs for resisting christian conversion. Notice the use of adjectives that springs forth from these vermins’ idea that they are smart-alecs, but in reality exposes them as cojones-less mercenaries who do the bidding of their sponsors -

“Maharashtra Police sources said that, according to the witness, the call was made by Gujarat-based Hindu-nationalist leader Jatin Chatterjee. Mr. Chatterjee — widely known in southern Gujarat by his clerical alias, Swami Asimanand — runs the controversial Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, which operates a Hindu-proselytisation programme targeting adivasis in southern Gujarat”

The ashram is ‘controversial’. And it ‘targets’ Advasis to make them Hindus. Thus advasis are not Hindus. That is exactly the lines of missionaries who face resistance in Dangs due to the Shabri kumbhs.

There have been insinuations that Modiji in gujarat is not letting them arrest this Swamiji. As long as there is the process of transit remands and local police co-operation for effecting arrests across states, Modiji is absolutely right if he is indeed resisting this design. The ATS can take this story of a ‘eyewitness’ who ’saw’ the Swamiji on the other end of the phone to a Gujarat court for transit remand. Appears like they dont want to do that because of some invented ‘witness safety’ issue.

From the beginning, it appeared unnatural that they wont go after Modiji using this case. The net has been cast far and wide and the only missing target was Modiji. It is good to see the Man getting dragged. Now let us see.

  24. kumar says:

    Arjun,

Fair point about the election issues.

1.Soft on terror is thetoric. Congress will say that they were not soft on terror. They will show a few arrests on either side. They will parade evidence that 50% of blasts done by Jihadis and 50% done by Abhinava Bharat/BD.

2.Congress biggest problem issue is the economy and inflation. They will dole out sops to various sections of the voting public and try their best to bring inflation down.

I am not saying Congress tactics will work and BJP’s will fail. I just want to understand their strategy better.

Committed BJP voters will vote BJP any way.The battle now is for the neutral vote, which is significant because we have assemblye elections in key states along with LS polls.People may vote one party at the State and vote BJP/Congress for LS.And the youth vote is largely neutral at present.

  25. kumar says:

    Reason,

“The net has been cast far and wide and the only missing target was Modiji. It is good to see the Man getting dragged.”

Good point there. If Modi ji gets dragged into this, things will get resolved fast.

  26. arjun says:

    kumar,

I am not very sure if neutral Hindu voters would vote for Congress just because some Hindu nutcases planted some bombs after a series of bomb blasts by jihadis.

Secondly, the kind of people who would not vote for BJP because of this would never vote for BJP anyways.

It is true that the terror case is there in the media all the time but is it the biggest issue in the elections. I do not think so. Even BJP has not made this a campaign issue. I do not think BJP has used the issue in Chattisgarh or Rajasthan or Delhi in a big way. Maybe in MP there is a whisper campaign in suport of Pragya.

Once the Assembly election results come out, the attention of the media and the people would change.

I agree that this has blunted BJP’s terror plank, but it has also provided a Hindutva issue.

  27. arjun says:

How this plays out only time will tell. From the reports I gather that it was BJP which wants to convert Pragya issue as a poll plank and that was based on reports from the ground.
I could be worng but I do not think think that English language media mood and opinion is reflective of that of the electorate.

  28. reason says:

The discussions on ‘conversions’, ‘Dharma’ or ‘how to tacke ATS stories” are good in a way. But politics is a different game. Those who take nuanced positions on Advaniji’s statement yesterday and say BJP should have been different, might never have voted for the party or might never have voted in any elections.

Most people in the real world who go out to vote, have no time or interest or ability to spot those nuanced positions or indulge in them. They know well they have just one vote to express everything they have got.

In the ATS case, for the BJP there are only these things to focus on
    - the spit-and-scoot nature of the trial with a willing media tarnishing reputations. Compare that with the Kanchi Sankaracharya case, four years after a hurried arrest on Deepavali day with allegations that the Swamiji was ready to flee to Nepal on a helicopter, the case has not even started.
    - the hurry with which the ATS is working this case, travelling far and wide, and the absolute lack of progress on the mumbai train bombs. Contrast that by showing the victims involved in the incidents – both in numbers and in their religion.

This may or may not be ‘dharmic’, or ’statesmanly’. But this will help the campaign and make the people understand quickly. Comparing and contrasting are very good ways to make people form quick perspectives. Not everyone is going to read Tarun Vijay or Praveen Swami. Actually, may be less than 0.1% do.

Nuanced positions are important too, but for the BJP these can happen in the backroom. No need to confuse a voter over Jinnah’s positions on secularism at different times in his life, if I may use that as an example.

  29. Vivek says:

Slightly off the topic, but heres a back track on the orissa nun case. She now says the she wasnt gangraped. Instead, she was saved by a local Hindu man. Are we seeing a Zaheera Sheik in the making??

  30. arjun says:

    reason, absolutely agree with you.
In fact for most of the voters, this may not even be an issue. I can already sense a bit of fatigue on part of people with this media overload on the issue.

I doubt of this issue will have fizz for very long time. But it helps Congress in solidifying minority vote.

  31. reason says:

    >> In fact for most of the voters, this may not even be an issue.

Nope, it must be made an issue if it is not already, and it can be made an issue easily. Use simple compare-and-contrast in meetings and the people will easily make the connections. That is even made easier because the question at the end can be ‘do you support our army’. Always works.

Forgit about dharma and nuances for now, focus on the campaign, focus on the politics.

  32. reason says:

It appears Amma jayalalitha in TN will go with the third front communists. That is good news. I was saddened by Modiji meeting her – I will never forget the way the Kanchi Sankaracharyas were arrested on a false case.

Advaniji did the right thing in courting Rajnikanth during his chennai book-launch visit. ‘amma’ is such a megalomaniac that she can not stand a thing like that. She did the obvious thing in follow up and walked into the communists camp. good riddance. Post elections, the DMK and ADMK will have to make their choices based on which camp emerges leading nationally. No use in aligning with her now.

If the BJP aligns with the amma now, they will also lose a excellent campaign tool – now they can compare the Kanchi Acharya’s arrest with what the ATS is doing now. The meeting that Rajnath Singhji attended with RSS leaders and Baba Ramdev already did that.

Thank you Advaniji for choosing Rajnikanth over Amma, even if Rajnikanth wont campaign or endorse you publicly. That is good politics.

Locked in a triangular contest with rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), local leadership of the Congress party have become apprehensive over the prospects of the party emerging as the winner for a third consecutive term.

The party’s central leadership had not scheduled rallies of its top leaders in Delhi following an assurance from chief minister Sheila Dikshit that the Congress victory was imminent. However, various pre-poll surveys show the Congress party trailing behind BJP and the BSP.

Sonia will address a rally on Mangolpuri on Sunday while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is slated to address a rally at Ambedkar Nagar on November 27, just two days prior to the elections.

The selection of Mangolpuri and Ambedkar Nagar as the venues of the rallies of the top two leaders of the party reflects the panic BSP has managed to create amongst the Congress leadership. Both seats are reserved for Scheduled (lower) Castes which is considered the base of the BSP.

Delhi’s education minister Rajkumar Chauhan is contesting the Mangolpuri seat while Delhi assembly speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh is the candidate from Ambedkar Nagar. Surveys suggest that both are trailing behind their BJP rivals mainly due to the BSP factor.

Btw, what is the update on the Assam blasts and the Mumbai blasts that took place in 2006.

  41. arjun says:

Dude, no one is defending any terrorists here. What we are objecting to is the use of this incident by Congress and Commies, who have been soft on terror to cover theor lapses.

Nowhere have i said that its a lesser crime and nor have i implied anything of that sort.Yes its shameful. But what is highly objectionable is that she said she was gangraped and is now saying that she was raped only once. if she can change her stance from multiple rapes to one rape then how can we go by what she is saying is the profound truth and that she has not cooked up this one rape too.

  43. arjun says:

I am not an expert on law but a video showing a bunch of people together and someone making a speech (however distasteful) does not seem like enough evidence to convict someone of terrorism.

If after 8 weeks of custody, this is the best they come up with, it does not inspire much confodence.

The suspects could still be invloved, but ATS will have to get better evidence than an overheard telephone conversation or a video of suspects together in a public function.

  44. arjun says:

bhanu, read the comments to the ToI story. This is the evidence ATS has or Congress is trying to influence public opinion after people started asking for evidence.

  45. bhanu says:

    Arjun my point exactly.
Since when is it illegal to hold meetings and condemn attacks on our soil? In that case shouldn’t Imam Bukhari be also investigated? How about Arundhati she openly said Kashmir should be given its freedom and so did other half a dozen edits.
BTW noticed only 2 comments went against the flow.
Does ATS think that people r so stupid to have a video made if they were discussing these attacks? Does ATS think Purohit an Intelligence officer would go around sending SMSes after Sadhvi’s arrest?

Congresss has yet again proved that it is a devilishly ckever organization. See how easily it has outfoxed the BJP again, and put it on the defensive. Was congress ever on the defensive on Bofors ?Yes, Congress is clever because BJP is stupid. Purohit or no Purohit,BJP must tell the pople about Congress;’s dirty tricks, talk, talk and talk about all the evil things Congress does. Do your duty regardless of results.

  48. Bharat says:

    @R.Viswanathan

BJP is living in the ancient days of Ramrajya. They are not living in todays Kaliyuga. Only Chanakya understoods it properly and he was quick to work and succeed.

If BJP thinks by practising Ramrajya days Dharma they can regain power, then they are living in fools paradise. They will experience another 2004 in 2009.

BJP need to calibrate strategies, and go for all-out attack on anti-Hindu Congress. Congress is the mother all terrorism in Bharat, since the days of Nehru. They have to create emotions among Hindu masses, against anti-Hindu, anti-national Congress.

I don’t think Congress outfoxed BJP, Congress is playing double edge weapon. And one must realise what it means. By HIndu terror boggy, Congress may gain jihadi votes, but they will loose most hindu votes. They can’t intimidate Hindus by hindu terror boggy, and tell not to vote BJP. BJP have so many issues on Congress to create emotions among Hindu masses, eg. Congress affidavit of Ram does not exists, Amarnath land issue, priting christian Cross on Rupee two, killing of Swamiji and his associates in Orisa, now abusing Hindu woman sadhvi, and list goes on.

  49. Venkatesh says:

    Bharat,

My take is that the congress will neither win the hindu vote and not garner the muslim vote. the congress is fast on the route to irrelavancy, they dont rule in any of the big states on their own and are losing steam even then eg maharashtra.

the BJP does not have to be nuanced. I am one of those who believe that the BJP lost beacuse it is not hindu enough. If Advani criticizes the harassment of a lady, i think there is nothing wrong in that. It is in fact welcome. No point in getting defensive. One of the bloggers had suggested a great attack ad, that the mullahs are innnocent and the sadhvis are guilty, and on such lines. I think they need to go for the jugular. if they do so they will win the trust of hindus who are fencesitters. i dont know what the BJP gains by catering to the mullahs and padres, it should come out and say it is a hindu party and more importantly walk the talk

In fact LKA politics on the affidvait is a masterpiece. MMS called him and asked him to stop BJP from mounting a campaign. LKA has refused. Congress will have to attack LKA and BJP for supporting terrorists and the more they do that the more BJP benefits.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s efforts to smoothen the ruffled feathers of the Sangh parivar in general and Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani in particular, over the investigations into the Malegaon blasts and interrogation of Pragya Singh Thakur seem to have had no serious impact.

Advani had issued a strong statement from Raipur on Tuesday in defence of Pragya, referring to her allegations of “barbaric torture” against the Mahrashtra ATS. He had demanded scrapping the ATS team and turning the investigations into a judicial probe instead.

According to sources in the BJP, the Prime Minister called up Advani on the phone the same day and for over half an hour he tried to convince the BJP leader that the police is not torturing Pragya. The Prime Minister also tried to persuade Advani not to make statements which could vitiate the investigations and demoralise the interrogating team.

But Advani reportedly told the Prime Minister that he should see the Pragya affidavit and only that could make him believe what mental and physical torture she has been undergoing.

The Prime Minister then offered to send National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan to explain all the circumstances.

Advani reportedly told the Prime Minister, “They are welcome. But no one can restrain me from reacting to such barbaric treatment to a sadhvi, sanaysin.”

  51. arjun says:

BJP should ask the PM if he is able to sleep well when the Sadhvi is being tortured, especially since he could not sleep when some alleged terrorist was arrested in Australia.

Looks like MMS and govt are rattled by Sangh Parivar’s agitation plans.

The issue is that Congress is by no means a fair player. They are blatantly anti Hindu and indulgent of jihadi forces. So one suspects the investigations and their motives. BJP has to provide a political answer to this.

Congress will be forced to attack BJP for supporting Hindu terrorists and will get sandwiched by the Sangh parivar and the minority votes like in Amarnath issue.

  52. R. Viswanathan says:

One cannot know what tidings December 8 will bring. ButI feel Chattisgarh might have gone in favour of the BJP. THe big turnout suggests that to me. But the big prizes are MP, Rajasthan and Delhi. If Congress wins even one of the three, it would be construed as ‘victory’ of its ant-Hindu antics, that there will be no ‘Hindu’ backlash. In which case anti-Hindu hysteria will continue in the media till Lok Sabha elections. Whatever the future holds, let it be realized that, despite Arun Jaitley, N. Modi et al, BJP lacks the killer instinct to deliver a knock out blow to Congress. Bring out the sadhus et al, go from viillage to village, tell the Hindus Congress is ant-Hindu, congress has to be destroyed if Hindu pride is to be preserved, that Hindus are facing extinction at the hands of the congress.Yes, we do need an emotion-laden campaign, startt right today. Later the EC will come down on us. If BJP does not trounce Congress these days, it never will.In that case, why not it just recede into the background, and let some new Hindu leadership to emerge to fight the anti-Hindu movement now underway in this country.

BJP has edge in Delhi, MP, Chattisgarh; may head for tie with Congress in Rajasthan: Survey

New Delhi, Nov 21: In a close race to power in four states, a pre-poll survey released on Friday shows Congress and BJP tied in Rajasthan but the saffron party having an edge in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.

The opinion poll survey conducted by The Week/C Voter gives both the ruling BJP and the Congress between 94 and 106 seats in the desert state in a House of 200. The BJP at present has 120 seats. The survey provides for an average three percent margin of error.

In Madhya Pradesh, the survey puts the ruling BJP ahead with 118 to 128 seats compared to Congress’ 100 to 110 seats. In the existing 228-member Assembly, the saffron party has 171 seats.

The survey said opposition BJP is expected to bag between 36 and 42 seats for the Delhi Assembly in a House of 70. The ruling Congress may get 28 to 34 seats, it added.

In BJP-ruled Chattisgarh, the survey said the saffron party may get 44 to 52 seats followed by Congress with 38 to 46 seats. The BJP has 50 seats in House strength of 90.

In the chief ministerial stakes, voters covered in the survey showed preference for Sheila Dikshit over BJP’s V K Malhotra. 37 percent favoured the incumbent chief minister while Malhotra was preferred by 22 percent of those surveyed.

Advantage BJP, All Of A Sudden

Practically written-off just a few months ago, the BJP suddenly looks a contender for power. SWAPAN DASGUPTA tracks the party’s poll strategy

IN NOVEMBER 2003, shortly after the BJP was exultant over its triumphs in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and, most surprisingly, Rajasthan, the-then Deputy Prime Minister, LK Advani, admitted to me that he had unsuccessfully pressed for the Lok Sabha election to be held simultaneously with the five state assembly polls. Advani’s logic was compelling. It had then seemed that while the BJP had a very good chance of defeating Digvijay Singh in Madhya Pradesh, it looked like emerging as the runner-up in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Delhi. Therefore, rather than let the Congress be on a roll after emerging victorious in three of the four assembly polls, it made greater sense to contain the damage by going in for a simultaneous general election.

Advani’s calculation at that time was to deny the Congress a possible semifinal advantage by synchronising it with the finals. He was not to know that the BJP would prevail resoundingly in the semis and then become supremely overconfident and falter at the final hurdle.

It is interesting that a broadly similar argument was proffered by many Congress strategists earlier this year. It was admitted that the BJP had the advantage in Delhi, but there was a strong belief that local anti-incumbency would weigh decisively against the incumbent in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Since the BJP had won the overwhelming majority of Lok Sabha seats in these three states in 2004, the Congress could effect a double whammy and, perhaps, even ensure another term for the UPA Government.

Incumbent governments tend to be naturally risk-averse. In November 2003, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee still had a full year before Parliamentary elections were due; this year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was anxious to secure the completion of the Indo-US nuclear agreement before testing the electoral waters. A gamble, albeit even a calculated one, didn’t appeal to those in government.

In hindsight, the Congress leadership was probably wise to avoid a blind leap of faith. After the passage of the nuclear agreement in the Nuclear Suppliers Group and his controversial victory in the confidence vote, glib commentators suggested that Singh was indeed King. Yet neither his wisdo

I agree with Viswanathan’s observations. But, it seems most BJP leaders trying to be politically correct, so that they got no image problems to get support from BJP allies to become PM in future. I shall not blame Advani, he is PM candidate. He have to maintain statesman position. But still he speaks strongly. What about others?

What BJP needs a National Movement against anti-Hindu Congresss. They have to speak out the truth to Hindus, todays Congress is Anti-Hindu Organization, govt.

A few name-sake Hindus collaborating with rabid anti-Hindu Italian christian Congress head, only to enjoy power and personal interests.Same brand of Hindus worked for Mughals and British as collaborators.

If BJP wants Hindu votes and win election, they must start a national movement (similar type of Ayodhya movement of !990s) against anti-Hindu Congress and its gangs, for calling we One Billion Hindus terrrorists and terrorising us using their paid Sickualr Media for the last one month. If not, then BJP should see the scene of 2004 loksabha lessions.

Go BJP Go Offensive. Power comes with a cost, not by enjoying luxurious Mahals. First get the power, then time to relax and enjoy.
