On the flight from Delhi to Raipur today, I read the full text of Sadhvi Pragya’s affidavit before the Nashik court. I cannot believe that such barbaric treatment has been meted out to a spiritual person, that too, a woman in a country that prides itself on its democracy and rule of law.

So far I had refrained from commenting on the allegations levelled by the Maharashtra ATS against Sadhvi Pragya and her supposed associates. But after going through her affidavit detailing how she was physically and psychologically tortured and abused in obscene language by her interrogators, I have to express my shock and outrage which I am sure all Indians will share.

It is incredible that the Sadhvi was kept in illegal detention for two weeks while she was tortured in a vicious manner which led to her hospitalisation. Polygraph and narco tests were conducted without her consent. Not even a female constable was present during her illegal confinement
?
It has further become clear that the ATS is acting in a politically motivated and unprofessional manner. After levelling all kind of charges against a serving Army officer, and suggesting he stole RDx from an army depot to organise blasts in the Samjhauta Express, it has now admitted that no RDX was used in those blasts.

In view of the shocking charges made against the ATS by the Sadhvi and the fact that the present investigating team has lost all moral authority,

I demand:

1. The present ATS team investigating the case be changed totally, and
2. A judicial inquiry be ordered to probe the charges made by Sadhvi Pragya and the manner in which unsubstantiated allegations have been made against serving Army Personnel.

I am surprised that Mr Advani can demand that the investigating team be changed based on an affidavit filed by the accused. Filing an affidavit is a matter of saying whatever you want on a stamp paper that is duly notarised. If affidavits of the accused were to be the basis for us to pass verdict on investigators, I think we’ll have a free-for-all.
Nitin: I think the statement more means, team must changed their witch-hunting action and work professionally and not as champcha of anti-Hindu Congress.
Moreover, when Supreme Court can change judges (High courts, other courts) due to complaints of injustice (many instances), and revive old solved cases nullifying previous judges ruling, whats wrong to change ATS team? Nitin: Though you have addressed your comment to Yossarin, I have something to say. It is just an affidavit. But she has something to say about the way in which the ATS conducted itself. She was even subjected to Narco test before being formally arrested, as per her statement. She has complained of torture, both physical and mental. Is it not objectionable in a civilised and democratic society.
I thought in the first instance whatever the ATS said is correct. But they started spinning yarns such as the RDX and Samjhauta blasts etc., etc., They were so eager to implicate these suspects in all other cases. It seemed that they were following someone else’s dictates. Then came the U-turn from the RDX theory. Now it is very difficult to believe whatever this ATS says. They are supposed to be thorough professionals. How can they say that Purohit pilfered 60 KGs of RDX and used it for Samjhauta blasts then make a complete turnaround. I just saw Mahesh Jethmalani’s interview in Times Now. He is the one who is defending Sadhvi Pragya in Malegaon blasts case. This is what he has to say when asked why he was defending Sadhvi.
“There is no proof against Sadhvi other than the fact that her motorcycle which was sold 4 years back was allegedly used in the blasts. And she has already accepted she sold the motorcycle. Moreover narco-analysis tests didn’t prove anything. Neither was their any link between Sadhivi and Purohit.”
I sincerely hope truth prevails in her case.
The Sadhvi says in her affidavit she was abused, beaten up with belt and the ATS conducted Narco test three times, one before being formally arrested. What is happening under rule of these barbarians ? This ATS has proved themselves as totally unprofessional. Otherwise they won’t shoot in the dark that RDX was used in Samjhauta blasts and Purohit procured 60 Kgs of RDX from army. Is it so easy to get RDX from army. Is it so easy to carry 60 Kgs of RDX single handedly. Now they have retracted. What kind of professionalism is this. They deserve to be summarily dismissed from service for this kind of assertion and retraction as they failed to maintain the high standard of professionalism in their work.
Now Purohit’s detention is extended for some forgery case. Somehow or other they want to continue to detain Purohit too. Something sinister is going on.

Allegations by Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur that she was tortured by ATS are a ‘blot on Maharashtra’s image’, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray said today.
“It is also really despicable that despite being a woman, she was interrogated by male police officers,” Uddhav told reporters here.
“A lot is being made out about the Sadhvi’s narco tests. Then what about stamp paper scam accused Telgi’s narco test? The government should put the people he named in jail,” Uddhav said.
However, he said that his party would announce its position on the Sadhvi issue soon.

BJP was not in power, NDA was in power. BJP respected the coalition Dharma and it did not push issues important to it through the coalition members. BJP has been, and is saying that if they get a simple majority on their own, they will pursue all these issues immediately. You should first give BJP full majority in the parliament and if it still does not do the things you mentioned then you have a right to accuse it. Till then it is very unfair and dishonest to say the things you are saying.

if the affidavit had just mentioned torture, harrasment etc it is unlikely Advani would have made a statement because unless proved it would simply be an allegation and would depend on the definition od torture but the affidavit also mentions that the Sadhvi was kept in illegal detention for two weeks, and a female constable was not present during her illegal confinement. Now these two things are not subjective at all. If a female constable was not present then its wrong, simple as that, same with the illegal detention.
Besides the ATS going back on its earlier statement regarding RDX makes the whole thing sound fishy. Advani’s comments should be taken in the context of not just the affidavit but also on the bais of the fact that the ATS has not yet presented a single shred of evidence and has also changed its own statement

Even if we give BJP the benefit of the doubt for the following central government prerogatives:

What prevented it from acting on the following:
- Ram Mandir

BJP’s abdication of Ram Mandir issue is the reason why it is in a rut in UP.
Further, it is a given that coalition politics is here to stay. Even if the BJP gets simple majority, it will not jettison its NDA allies, i.e., BJP will NEVER contest Lok Sabha elections alone. Which means that all its talk about Article 370, uniform civil code etc is hot gas only. Coaltion dharma is a feeble excuse.
Personally, I support BJP coz, unlike Congress, they do act on development aspects and as far as I know, do not provide tacit or material support to naxalites, communists, islamic terrorists, christian evangelists and illegal bangladeshi muslim immigrants.
Bottomline: India is yet to have a popular political party that recognizes and takes pride in the fact that Hinduism is the soul of India. That glory of the latter cannot be de-linked from the former.

AFAIK, The first thing Himachal sarkardid last yr was free temples from state govt control. What abt the other BJP states? I don’t know. Does anybody know on the status of state control of temples in Guj, MP, Raj, K’taka? If this happened yet, aam BJP voters have every right to DEMAND answers on why it hasn’t.

LKA has not supported Pragya. He has not said she is inncoent. He has called for a probe into how she was treated.

The zeal with which Haryana despatched its own cops — on the basis of newspaper reports, it would appear — to Mumbai to probe Purohit’s alleged links to Samjhauta attack has not been appreciated by the government.
While the ATS has since been engaged in damage limitation and the Haryana cops, it is learnt, advised to be patient, the premature assertions and disclosures mean that home secretary Madhukar Gupta will have some explaining to do to his Pakistan counterpart when he travels to Islamabad for home secretary-level talks on November 25. More importantly, the government plans to seek an explanation on Pakistan President Asif Zardari’s promise — to conduct an independent probe — on the allegations made by New Delhi regarding Pakistan’s involvement in the Indian embassy bombing in Kabul.
On the Samjhauta tragedy front too, the UPA government officially shared with Pakistan its assessment about the suspected involvement of Pakistan-based jihadi groups. In fact, at the meeting of the counter-terror mechanism held after the bombing of the train, India had even passed on the photograph of a Pakistani national who was suspected to have planted the bomb on the train which killed 68 persons, almost all of them Pakistani nationals returning home after visiting their kin here. The ‘bomber’ was identified by one of the survivors of the attack, Ajmat Ali, a Pakistani national who lost his entire family in the tragedy, as the one who got off the moving train before the bomb went off near Panipat in Haryana.

I have just read the Sadhvi’s affidavit on the Daily Pioneer and I am appalled by the lack of basic human decency and the tendency to inflict third degree methods of torture as the only means of getting the accused to confess to his/ her crimes.

Yesterday the TOI had a patronising sermon to the VHP about not linking religion to terrorism and not to comment while the probe is on. I think the case is simple – all accused are not guilty unless found guilty.

The kind of evidence ATS has is that someone overheard a conversation or someone is saying something. This is not enough. If the people who investigated Samjhauta blasts said RDX was not used, shouldn’t ATS spend some time closing the dots before jumping to conclusions. You cannot rely on one guy’s statement. You have to thoroughly probe the lead and onlythen make a pronoucement.

LKA’s statement has received a negative spin in the mainstream media.
It is the abject failure of BJP as a party, that right of centre thinking does not have a voice in MSM.
Today’s ToI carried a few stories on the election scenario in MP, and Chattisgarh.They don’t paint a positive picture of BJP’s chances.
As per ToI,
MP- Rise of the BSP and Uma Bharti splitting the OBC vote would make it difficult for BJP.
Chattisgarh – Raman Singh has failed in implementing mid day meal scheme and other developmental schemes in the interior villages.Plus, the anti-incumbency wave.
(Whatever we feel about ToI, it happens to be the largest circulated English daily in the country; and people who read it tend to be either neutral voters or not very committed to one ideology or the other.And when they read such stories in MSM, they are bound to take them at face value.)
And even the BJP is not sounding very confident about Delhi due to the Sheila Dixit effect.
In Rajasthan, there is the Tickets for Sale issue and the resulting dissidence within BJP.
So, all is not so hunky-dory as some of the commenters seem to be suggesting on this site.
If BJP doesn’t perform well in these assembly elections, there is every likelihood of Parliament elections in February.
If the MSM is once again proved incorrect, and there is a Hindutva wave, BJP would do well in these elections.And UPA would probably postpone the LS elections till April/May.
BJP’s best chance to win the LS elections is to use NaMo as the trump card.The groundswell of support for NaMo and the admiration of the middle class, business class, and women and young voters, for NaMo is being greatly underestimated by the BJP and of couurse the blind MSM.NaMo could probably inspire young voters, women and middle class to come and vote in droves.

I don’t believe the affidavit of any terror suspect. However, that is irrelevant. All Muslim terror suspects too have filed similar affidavits.
But in this, the wise thing is to take the accusations seriously – and prove to the country that such things did not happen.

If memory serves me right, ToI predicted a close fight in Gujarat, but conceded that Namo has a slight edge.
Regarding Karnataka, ToI gave clear indications that BJP would gain from the sympathy factor and the disarray in Congress. They also mentioned about the Bellary mine owners and their group of supporters getting a lot of BJP tickets and the resulting advantages in that area.
So, no reason to write-off their reports on Chattisgarh, and MP.We could wish they are wrong the way they were in Gujarat, but they could also be right.

kumar, I agree with you. In general I have journalist reports to be lacking in depth and big picture. GVLNR is in the business of predicting polls and I read his columns. Of course no one is God and can predict with 100% accuracy. In fact, the only prediction he has made is that BJP will win in MP. He has been cautious and has said that CMs of all four states are popular.
In fact Delhi is proving to be a challenge. Jaitley does not seem to be 100% confident of victory. Not winning Delhi would lower BJP’s prospects of winning 2009 elections.

Agree wholeheartedly. If the issue here is that of the Sadhvi’s human rights alone, our people and parties are thick skinned enough to let it pass by. But the issue is that of UPA’s suspected political motives driving the investigation. So, as leaders of opposition, LKA and Rajnath are bound to step in and expose those motives to the best of their ability.If they keep queit, they risk alienating their primary vote bank.
Islamic terror suspects get the support from Human Rights groups, NHRC, the universities and other left-liberal establishments. Not to speak of constituents of the UPA itself, including cabinet ministers.So, even if they hate it, the Police are forced to follow due process.

According to various security analysts the motive behind Malegaon type blasts has been to deepen communal cleavage and incite riots. The bicycles purchased for Malegaon(2006) were all purchased from Hindu shopowners so as direct the leads towards a Hindu complicity. All this was confessed by Riyaz Bhatkal and his accomplices for the previou Malegaon blasts. But even then no communal riots erupted. Is it the case then that these Jihadis worked still harder this time to implicate some distinct Hindu nationalists by way of using one stolen bike. The same old strategy used once again but with more refinement. After all other than this bike, with all the powers at its command and with third degrees and long custodies legal and illegal, the ATS has still been unable to come up with any other evidence. I can not think of anything better other than that the whole conspiracy from blasts to the present investigations-synchronised perfectly to match with the election eve- is a meticulous cold blooded exercise.
