The Evangelical Project in Orissa

As Kandhamal burns, the BJD-BJP coalition in Orissa is under severe strain. It should be obvious to even the most amateur of political observers that the murder of Swami Lakshmananda was a pre-emptive strike at unravelling this coalition. The unabated violence against Christians is not just unacceptable but is plain stupidity to provoke it for it only widens chasm between the BJD and the BJP ahead of the elections to hand over Orissa on a platter to the Congress. The Naveen Patnaik Administration and the BJP must realise the stakes are too high for the NDA to?not contain the violence and to bring the perpetrators of the murdee and subsequent violence to justice.

Having said that the events in Orissa are symptomatic of a deeper malaise that needs to be fully understood. When violence had flared in Kandhamal during Christmas last yera Offstumped had pointed out that it was a feud over entitlements while highlighting the mischief mongering by the National Minorities Commission’s fact finding team.

The bias in the NCM’s investigation is clear from these remarks that find place in the official report.

The 1991 Census shows the Christians constituted 75597 of the population of Kandhmal district whereas in the 2001 Census their population had gone up to 117950. While the increase in population in percentage terms is substantial, there is no evidence whatsoever that this increase occurred under duress or on account of inducement to conversion. A stringent law regarding conversion the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act has been on the statute books for the past four decades. The NCM Members asked both district officials and senior officials in the State Secretariat whether any cases had been reported or filed with regard to infringement of this law over the past 10 years. Not one incident of forcible conversion was cited or adduced. We also inquired from the Church representatives whether they keep a register of conversions. Such a register is a routine practice at the time of baptism. The Church representatives confirmed that they indeed maintained such a register. But no one has apparently bothered to check it. In fact the Archbishop of Bhubaneshwar told the NCM team that neither he nor anyone in the Diocese was ever summoned by the authorities with regard to matters relating to conversion. From the above the NCM team has inferred that there is no basis whatsoever to justify the anti-conversion campaign. On the other hand, this mischievous campaign has created an atmosphere of prejudice and suspicion against the Christian community and Christian priests and organizations.

It is clear from the above that the NCM team did the bare minimum necessary to understand the social effects of evangelical activity in Orissa. But what is confounding is the arrogance of the NCM in concluding that there is “no basis” for what it calls an “anti-conversion” campaign.

Offstumped will now detail the Evangelical Project in Orissa and the foreign entities behind it.

To understand this Project better, Offstumped draws the attention of its readers to foreign evangelocal entities “World Encounter” and LCMC (a Lutheran Church Congregation). The LCMC has a quarterly newsletter and in its edition for the first quarter of 2007, the LCMC newsletter carried a detailed 1 page story focused on Orissa where it invited congregations in the U.S.A for what it called

For a life-transforming experience, join World Encounter, in association with LCMC, on a short term outreach to India October 5-22, 2007. Orissa Evangelical Fellowship (OEF), an LCMC association of churches in India, has invited congregations in the US to encourage them in their efforts to share the Good News with the unreached people of India.

What’s interesting is why this project zeroed in on Orissa of all places, in its own words.
The people of Orissa are primarily tribal/animists and Hindus who worship spirits, trees, rocks, and other objects of nature. The heart of the OEF vision is focused on church planting, discipleship, and leadership…Groups of believers worship inhomes and thatch-roofed churches. In the midst of opposi-tion to the Gospel, they are committed to reaching their Hindu neighbors and families with the Good News that has transformed their lives .

This precisely is the problem in Orissa – aggressive proselytization with foreign funding and support thats invasive of people’s privacy with a clear objective of “planting churches”, expanding to “new villages” and evangelizing to “Hindu Neighbors”.

This not about the practice of Christianity in Orissa.

This is about changing the social demographics and the fabric of society in poor rural pockets of Orissa, one village, one neighborhood at a time.

To appreciate how well prepared this Evangelical Project in its targetting of Orissa, consider this compilation of target Villages in Orissa by geo-cordinates.

To further appreciate the sophistication and subterfuge with which proselytization is conducted in Orissa in the post-Staines era read this blog post by a Brian Zahnd, founder and senior pastor of Word of Life Church, a 4,000 member congregation in St. Joseph, Missouri.

I was never allowed to sit on the platform and was never introduced as a preacher. P.G. would say that he and his wife, Lilly, and his daughter, Grace, were the preachers. They would get up, speak for five minutes, and then P.G. would say he had a friend he wanted to introduce and bring a “greeting.” P.G. would introduce me as a friend bringing a greeting, and then as he handed me the microphone, he would whisper, “Preach for an hour and a half.” We did this twice a day and every evening. So three times a day I would bring a 90 minute “greeting.” I was told the police were wondering, “Who is this greeting man?” Because several thousand local people were coming at night, the evening meetings took on the tone of an evangelistic event. The last three nights I preached strong evangelistic messages….

The Orissa Government maintains a list of foreign contributions to NGOs in Orissa. The list is worth reading to appreciate how much money was pumped from International sources to further the evangelical project in Orissa during the earlier part of this decade – 2.3 crores to Orissa Fellowship Ministry, 12 crores for Cuttack Roman Catholic Diocese, 2.73 crore for Indian Evangelical Association, 1.4 crores for Brethren in Christ Church, 2.8crores for East India Mission, 4.4 crores for Joypore Evangelical Lutheran Church … the list goes on.

Of all the digging up by Offstumped, this appeal for foreign funds by a Pastor from Orissa should take the cake, replete with address and details of Bank Accounts posted as a comment on a Christian Financial Ministries site,?its funny and tragic at the same time.

Pastor. Surya Karada AGAPE REACHING MINISTRIES GOVT. REGD. NO: 5392-30-2000-2001.GOVT. FCRA. NO: 105060070. FCRA.STATE BANK OF INDIA: ACCOUNTS. NO: 10535483790. PANCHGACHHIA, BARAIPALI, INDESTRIES.ESTATE SAMBALPUR, ORISSA, INDIA.768150

Had the NCM been honest and objective in its fact finding it would have detailed out the influence of foreign sponsored Evangelical Activities. The fact that this kind of evangelical proselytization with the aid and support of foreign entities finds no mention in the NCM’s report dents the NCM’s credibility while ascribing all the blame to the VHP’s so-called “anti-conversion” campaign.

Offstumped Bottomline: There is a critical distinction between the religious freedom of the Minority Community to practice its faith and the freedom to aggresively proselytize flush with funds and support by foreign entities. The former is a fundamental freedom enshrined in the Indian Constitution the latter is a privilege that has been abused to the detriment of the social fabric of poor rural communities. As Orissa picks up the pieces from this spate of violence the Evangelical Ministries would do well to reflect on the damage done by aggresive proselytization.

    Yossarin,
If I am right, Rajeev Gandhi had brought a legislation banning all foreign funding to Christian missionaries. Or was it mere talk which never materialised in a legislation. And if indeed this legislation was in place, as my memory suggests me, when and where was it undone. Waiting for your response.

Not the Maoists, everyone except some senior state government authorities maintain.

Sahu agreed: “A lot of Maoists were converts to Christianity and were involved in the December violence. But this attack does not look like their work,” Sahu said.

If not the Maoists, who could have killed the Swami? The needle of suspicion swings towards the militant Christian outfits. “Let’s face it, …

The problem with the adharmics is their penchant to get too confident and strike prematurely. Happened with Ayub in 1965 and is happening now with the evanjehadi (EJ) outfits in India.

Abuse of privilege can only go on so long before there is blowback.

BTW, what is the position of the BJD in Orissa? Is it pro-missionary? Why should the BJP-BJD relationship in Orissa come under strain at all? Should not the 2 come closer now to fight the INC-EJ nexus of mischefmakers?

    Just wondering onlee.

I was just wondering what the Vatican and the Italian government has to with the internal affairs of our nation. We will tackle it the way we deem fit. They should be asked in no uncertain to lay off from our internal affairs.

How can our diplomat can be called by the Italian government on a purely internal matter of India. Have we forgotten the reply of Malaysian govt. in the case of ethnic Indians of Malaysia. If UPA government has its spinal cord in tact, it would ask these governments to mind their own business and not to meddle in our internal affairs.

The root cause of the problem is conversion. I don’t understand the necessity of conversion at all when all religions lead to the same supreme goal. But there is something sinister in all these. Think of what is happening in J&K and North Eastern states. How they treat their minorities ?

Then about the NCM. Their approach is biased. If the Christians have a right to covert, does it not automatically mean people from any other religions can also try to reconvert these converted people. If the former is right, the latter becomes automatically right. But they don’t want their conversion activities to be interfered with. It should only be a one way traffic. So naturally the anti-conversion activists became their natural enemy.

Christianity has a history of conferring sainthood to such persons vis. Francis Xavier who was instrumental in bringing inquisition to Goa. Christians should apologize to the hindus for the heinous crimes this person has inflicted on the hindus.

Today I read news items that in Gujarat certain human rights activists demanding banning of VHP etc., Should the banning should apply to Christianity too who are fanning communal hatred by their harvesting of souls by all kinds of means.

For how many years we can keep quiet? We have been on the receiving end for the last 1300 years first from the Muslims and thereafter from the Christians. Our country is bifurcated into two on the basis of religion. Still we are on the receiving end on the truncated India. I really worry whether hindus have a future? Why the jehadis and harvesters of souls are after us? Why the so called secularists, (I would like to call them the secular terrorists, for they try to terrorise the meek hindu population), are bent upon painting the hindus as fundamentalists when the fact is otherwise. Is secularism a licence to insult hinduism, abuse hindus and their religious beliefs, try to convert them by all possible means to alien religions and if 50% is converted then start the usual ……..

Don’t shield “real culprits” in Laxmanananda killing: BJP
Bhubaneswar (PTI): Ruling BJD’s alliance partner BJP on Thursday demanded a thorough probe to unravel the motive behind killing of VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati instead of “shielding real culprits” by presuming the involvement of Maoists in the crime.

BJP state president Suresh Pujari, leader of BJP legislature party B B Harichandan and deputy leader Manmohan Samal held a discussion with chief minister Naveen Patnaik on the matter.

“I discussed certain issues with BJP leaders this morning,” the chief minister said without divulging the subject of discussion.

Pujari said Patnaik was informed about the reaction of the BJP rank and file after Saraswati’s killing.

Stating that there was a feeling of hurt among the BJP cadre due to the killing, Pujari said they demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

“We want to know the motive behind the killing of Swamiji,” he said refusing to subscribe to the government’s theory of Maoist involvement in the incident.

The BJP leaders told Patnaik that the real culprits were being shielded with the police pursuing investigation on Maoist line, party sources said.

Besides demanding arrest of all the persons involved in the attack on Saraswati, the BJP leaders also sought proper implementation of anti-cow slaughter and anti conversion laws in toto.

At the ceremony the police chief said, “People think I am anti-Christian, but I’m not. I was educated in a Christian school.” He then gave his officers a strict order to allow the meetings to go on without harassment.”

Good for the police chief…and it goes on…

“Even the name of the conference — Orissa Peace Festival — was a deliberate euphemism so as not to evoke hostility. One morning I woke up at 5:00 and the Lord gave me an evangelistic message I called, “Ten Things the Bible Says about Peace.” I believe it was very effective. In the daytime sessions I primarily taught on faith.

Today as we made the five hour drive from Semiliguda to Visakhapatnam, P.G. told me he thought these were the most powerful meetings he’s ever been in. I can’t tell you how happy that made me!

Thank you for praying for me and the conference and a special thank you to the Joseph Company for underwriting this awesome event. Only heaven will reveal all that has been accomplished this week.

Congress behind attack on churches in Orissa: BJP

    BHUBANESWAR, AUG 28 (PTI)
The BJP today alleged Congress was “instigating” communal flare up in riot-hit areas of Orissa and suspected its hand in the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati.

“Congress is behind attack on churches across Orissa. The churches are damaged in the assembly segments of Congress MLAs. Therefore, I accuse Congress of instigating attack on places of worship for Christian community”, BJP’s general secretary Vinay Katiyar told reporters here after holding discussion with party leaders.

Katiyar alleged Congress could be behind the killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati on August 23 night.

“Though it is matter of investigation, I have a strong feeling that Congress’ involvement in the killing of swamiji may surface”, Katiyar said.

“It was Christians, you know, not Pagans, (Heathens) who were responsible for the Holocaust.

It was Christians, not Pagans, who lynched people here in the South, who burned people at the stake, frequently in the name of this Jesus Christ”

    2. Francois Marie Arouet Voltaire (1694-1774) France’s greatest writers and philosophers, was atheist, and a bitter critic of the Church, which he looked upon as the instigator of cruelty, injustice, and inequality, wrote, in a letter to Frederick the Great (1712–86):

“Christianity is the most ridiculous, the most absurd, and bloody religion that has ever infected the world.” Where is the prince sufficiently educated to know that for seventeen hundred years the Christian sect has done nothing but harm?’ “Every sensible man, every honorable man, must hold the Christian sect in horror.”

“You will notice that in all disputes between Christians since the birth of the Church, Rome has always favored the doctrine which most completely subjugated the human mind and annihilated reason.” “As you know, the Inquisition is an admirable and wholly Christian invention to make the pope and the monks more powerful and turn a whole kingdom into hypocrites.”

About the atrocities committed by the Roman Catholic Church in Goa in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, Voltaire in his ‘Fragments of India’s History’ observed: ‘Goa is sadly famous for its Inquistion, which is contrary to humanity as much as to commerce. The Portuguese monks deluded us into believing that the Indian populace was worshipping the Devil, while it is THEY who served him’.

  13. Arvind says:

Looking at some of the statements here I’m really perplexed. So if Congress is behind the Church attacks (I somehow think RSS/VHP wouldn’t do it to just avenge Swami’s death, it would be like shooting their own foot) does that mean it was aided and abetted by some local Christian leaders? If that’s the case, how are these evangelical jehadis any different from Taliban? Wow so sick. If that were the case when the BJP next comes to power either in state or centre it should highlight these through a series of psy-op articles in prominent national dailies. If some nations in the West (mainly US and UK) are upset they can go to hell. They need India and India’s market of a billion people much more than India needs them. The name of the church, the name of the Christian sect it belongs to, names of the Church leaders, where from it gets a lot of funding, where all in India it is active everything should be publicized in great detail. As they say sunlight is the best disinfectant. On top of this, the church and its funders should be placed on “Terrorism Watchlist” maintained by MEA and the funds should be completely frozen and all future funding blocked.

  14. Arvind says:

I’ve also read that apart from offering money for conversion the EJ groups also profess hatred on the peoples’ past history and culture. How sick is that? Why is no one making such things public in Indian media? In India I think the people are always afraid of the “possible consequences”. Scrap Article 370? Then Kashmir will “burn” and there will be dire consequences. Bring Uniform Civil code? Then there will be the wrath of Muslims, the one idiot who says that thinks he speaks for entire Muslim community and also India is a banana republic. Always, this fear psychosis is built up and taking the “easy way out” is encouraged. Well guez what? The chickens are going to come home to roost one day. Instead of dealing with a minor riot today, you might have to deal with a full-fledged war at a future date.

Ok coming back to topic. I thinking this conversion thing will slowly peak out. There are 2 reasons – first India is growing economically by as much as 10% recently, the poor are not gonna become rich overnight but I’d suspect conversions are not that easy and I’ve these days heard with RSS help there are even a lot of “reconversions” so they are countering it; secondly I wonder how they still get volunteers for these missionary activity, most are probably protestants from US because who the heck gives 2 cents about Church in Europe and Europe’s population itself is decreasing but anyways I think India is such a country that some of these volunteers and the converted would themselves go about converting Christianity (this was recently witnessed when some sects decided to add some verses from Vedas onto the bible, i don’t know about u but I think that’s a good thing and an example of Christianity itself getting converted). What was once thought of as India’s weakness, its population, is going to turn out to be its important strength. So Hindus should be cautious but at the same time not panic and take bad steps.

  15. Ram Jan says:

There is no single approach for handling this conversion menace. It has to be multi-pronged. These do not produce immediate effect but will certainly

    1. Help poor Hindus and induce pride in them.
Fund organizations like ekal.org, sahyog foundation etc which help strengthen the weaker sections of the society.

2.Christians are not a united lot.
There is already a wave of confusion among existing Christians and their clubs over who are behind the fraudulent conversions, their ethics & mores. Christian fundamentalists unlike their Jehadi counterparts do not resort to open violence but go about carrying their mission in cunning & surreptitious ways. They act like mafia clubs with their own finances & targets. The relations between these clubs are sometimes volatile and they can be exploited. Syrian orthodox, penta-costals, adventists, catholics, dalit groups etc etc etc exist today & things in their house have become as complex as caste system, so talk openly to you good christian friends and try to make them truly secular & impotent like Hindus in India.

    3.Try to cut external funding.
NRIs can do a little extra here. Talk about ancient history, culture, heritage & lineages of modern day Christian nations with awe whenever you meet your non Indian Christian friends.Flatter & praise their non Christian ancestors. Tell them the fraudulent ways of missionaries in developing nations, immoral life styles of pastors & how they are wasting donations coming from innocent Christians hard earned money. This kind of talk, will surly bring in uneasiness about pastors, evangelicals and their devious ways in developing countries.

4.Christianity is a fad now, people looks towards east because they find its ways exotic.
Exploit this trend to the maximum. Encourage your friends to explore Hinduism. We have always lagged in this public relations and advertising departments. Its now time to start encouraging people to explore our religion.

And as a response to a post which wondered why these semitic cult people are after Hindus & India, I would request you to understand the history of these cults. You will see that we are the last pagan nation standing ready to remind the rest of fallen ones that all is not over. Our culture, ideals & values are highly infectious and are detrimental to these cults. The heads of these cults know this very well and exert maximum strengths to tarnish, undermine & exterminate our ethos. They have failed repeatedly and will continue to fail just because their basis, their framework & their modus operandi is weak & unnatural.

  16. Sootradhaar says:

    >>…Christian fundamentalists unlike their Jehadi counterparts do not resort to open violence but go about carrying their mission in cunning & surreptitious ways…

Hmmm…I’d like to quote Malcolm X in this context:
“A white man always speaks with a forked tongue!”

    >>…You will see that we are the last pagan nation standing ready to remind the rest of fallen ones that all is not over…

Thats what is/was in the mind of Vatican, when the last Popa, on the eve of his visit to India during Deepawali in ‘99 said that in the first millenia, Europe was converted to Christainity, in the second it was Africa & now, in the coming millenia, its the turn of Asia!

Its so sad to see as to how nations like South Korea have rapidly undergone conversion to Christainity, and is already on the verge of loosing its native culture & traditions. If we Hindus still fail to wake up to the onslaught of both the desert cults, Islam & Christanity, and in the process our culture, values & traditions get usurped by the adherents & converts of these devlish cults, we would have nobody but ourselves to blame!

To rub salt into the ‘festering’ wound, the partner in the local govt is a party which is counted on to look after the interests of the community facing this ‘cultural’ invasion, and despite similar incidents in not so distant-past, BJP falied to force the govt to take up preventive measures as well as provide adequate security mesures to Swamiji & his band of followers.

We have to act. TN, Andhra are also under immense Xtian attack. Save our Dharma and our way of life. We need to join forces.

  27. Jiggs says:

I care a fig leaf on how the Church perceives this response by the Hindus, fact remains that xtian goons were involved in the gruesome murder of the Swami and now they will have to pay for it.

I dont have shred of remorse on this action read violence let loose by Hindus in Orissa.

“If you sow the wind, you reap the whirl wind – Aurthur “Bomber” Harris”

Its simple, you dont get away with forced conversions, instigate such people to murder Hindu leaders and get away with it. You pay for it, if the state cannot bring the culprits to justice, then the people should and they are.

It is very easy/cozy for us to sit in air conditioned environments and comment on the unnecessary violence let loose on the xtians, however, ground realities are different, Hindus living on ground zero have to go thru. hell and their response towards this pre dominantly xtian atrocity is understandably.

Justice is a two way traffic. There is a limit to one’s tolerance.

Maoists deny role in VHP leader’s murder

While the Chindu reporter says it has deepened the mystery. Yeah, right, only if you have an IQ of 0 or mortgaged it to your ideological masters, could this all be a mystery. Everything is in the open for those who want to see, nothing can be done for those who deliberately look the other way or keep their eyes closed. Late Swami L Saraswati was earlier targetted by christian terrorists on, IIRC, 24 December 2007. He was badly injured. Now they have finished the job by murdering an old swami along with innocent people.

  30. Ram Jan says:

    Some observations:

All the news articles that I read address Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati as a VHP leader instead of using the world a Hindu Sanyasin or a Hindu monk. They are trying to take advantage of the gullibility of an average Hindu and his penchant to keep distance from organizations like VHP. Or do they implicitly convey the message that its okay to kill a person who belongs to VHP.

All articles say that many Indians are converting willingly to escape oppression sanctioned by complex caste system and there are not fraudulent conversions.

Most of these articles were written by Muslims :-) .

Also, Does anyone know if ASHA charitable foundation is involved with funding Maoist, Christian nexus in India ?.

  31. arjun says:

Guys, even on CNN IBN, 90% of the people believed that conversions are pitting Hindus against Christians. There is consensus amongst Hindus because it hurts Hindus and the converts are taught to hate their Hindu past and the way they look at Hindus changes.

So, there is no need to win an intellectual debate on this.

    Dear Yossarin,
The BJP/VHP and the Bajarang Dal are missing a trick here. I’m an inhabitant of Orissa, and this state is remarkably free of caste based violence and also Religious violence since ages.

My Father knew Lakshamananda Sarwaswati personally, right from when he was in Vedavyas Rourkela. His death was unfortunate, but, the correct course here should have been to find out the culprits.

Indulging in the nameless rioting and violence does leave a lot to be desired. The name of Orissa are being spoiled.

The Press also does not help matters..The prominent Mouthpieces of the MSM(TOI/Times Now – Rajaram Satpathy , NDTV – Sampad Mohapatra) have learnt their trade in Sambad, which is a Congress Mouthpiece..

You should not forget the Naxalites/Maoists in this..They might have planned this since, they hate the current BJD Govt. for the prosperity measures in the state. This sounds like a divide and rule theory in place…

    http://www.tathya.in/2008/story.asp?sno=2135

Orissa has seen it’s best development since, Independence , in the last 8 years. I’m not sure we want to forgo that.

Also, such violence is not typical to Odia culture..I would request any big people to maintain peace and work to reconcile…..

CANA stands for Christian AIDS National Alliance.

The website is slick, their intentions quite obvious.

This NGO(CANA) has been created in India to apply for grants and fraudulently get the millions of dollars allocated to the AIDS/India grant (given by the Bill Gates Foundation) and then use this money to convert the poor Hindus all over India.

The Foundation has already announced a grant of USD 58 million for HIV/AIDS Avahan Programme for a period of five years.

Don’t bother at all, by reading some anti-Hindu sickular medias false propagandas and bullying. Nothing has happened to the image of your lovely province. We understand the glorious culture of Odisha’s peaceful people. But we must realise, in todays real world we can’t survive being idealistic and being silent watcher to attacks on our brethens. Please read about the Goa Inquisition by the Portuguese invadors and rulers, you will understand the gravity.

Our (Hindus) peacefulness and extreme tolerance has taken as weakness by the agressive fanatic forces, inside and outside. We have to practice Dharma, as propounded in the Bhagavad Gita, not merely read for mental satisfaction.

Don’t think, its a small matter that a Swamiji of 85 years old, was brutally killed along with his 4/5 deciples (including a Swadvi) on the night of Hindu’s biggest auspicious day Janmastami in his ashram. Don’t forget, Swamiji has offered his selfless service to the society for the last over 50 years. He is a Ratna (Jewel) of Odisha and Bharat.

Dharma rakshati rakshitah (Dharma protects those, who protects dharma).

The christianization of india was an operation that began during the British rule and continues till date.

One interesting thing is that the present list of castes certified under the Scheduled Caste domain is a literal copy and paste of castes that the British targetted for Christian conversion.

Sadly in our own self defeating way, we failed to remove one major weapon of the evanjehadis – the school system. Thanks to license raj, the convents got away with being the only schools allowed to run. They survived on hindu money and most teachers were hindu!!!! Now with the economy opening up you see that this is not the case and there is many a hindu entreprenuer giving them a run for the money.

    << At Bharat,
I am pretty much aware of many inquistorial activities. I know about the Portuguese insurrection. I’m also aware of the Holocaust(which, was incidentally perperated bu Christians on Jews).

My point, is that, inspite of that, I dont make a claim to belong to that culture. I would follow, the American approach here. They have succesfully, esnured that, there is no terrorism, and , Human rights violations are not a problem.

I would prefer, an approach, which does not , imbibe lawlessness in it..

I know it is difficult to understand..But, my point, is that, this seems to be an effort by Maoists, to actually create problems.

It could also be true..that, the people who shot Sri Lakshmananda Saraswati, were, both, Maoists and Christians.. That might be an Interesting thought process….

    The business of faith
7 Sep 2008, 0407 hrs IST, Amrita Singh ,TNN

There was a time the Christian missionary spread the word of god in a simple and direct way. He would step off a boat, make friends with locals and after years of effort, count a sizable flock.

Cut to 2008 and it’s a different scenario altogether. Church planting agencies, as they are called, have taken over the evangelical role. They ensure that growth targets are set and new churches built.

There is quantifiable growth. In the four years from 2003, 22 new International Churches of Christ were built. The Adventists has concrete plans to build 500 new churches too. The Presbyterian Church of south India, which is funded by the UK-based Mission to the World, also has a goal of 500 new churches in the next decade.

The growth means the existing flock has to dig ever deeper into its pockets because the new churches are funded partly by members and partly by foreign donations. Senthil Joseph (not his real name), who goes to church occasionally, says: “Even though I am not a regular, I have to make donations for the new churches. In the last 10 years, since I moved to Delhi, 10 new churches of my (Syrian Christian) sect have come up and every time I have to pay a heavy donation.”

Most Christian denominations use the name-and-shame method to force their flock to donate generously. Joseph says: “The amount given is published in the annual telephone directory of the community for every one to see.”

The commercial thrust has made the last decade one of the most successful for the growth of Christianity in India. According to a forecast by the World Religious Council, India’s 25 million-strong Christian population could balloon five-fold by 2050.

Church planting agencies have never been busier. These agencies are described by the Indian Evangelical Mission as “specialists in taking Christianity to places where it has no presence and training people to establish new churches there.”

One of the most effective church planting agencies working in India is the US-based AD 2000 and Beyond Movement. It is impressively organized, having mapped the whole of India by caste and identifying those most likely to be receptive to their message. AD 2000 lists nine Indian tribes as Priority-I, possibly because they are so poor they’re deemed most likely to convert.

The nine tribes identified by AD 2000 are: Bhilala, Binjhwari, Chero, Kawar/Kamari, Lhoba, Majhwar, Panika, Shin or Sina, and Sikkimese Bhotia. AD 2000 identifies thickly-populated, politically important and moderately poor northern India as “the core of the core of the core”.

In a sign of some of these church planting agencies’ sense of purpose, AD 2000 has drawn up detailed plans to target all of India’s 75,000 postal pin codes with the ultimate goal of a church in each.

So, how do church planters work in the 21st century when the days of the itinerant missionary are long gone? Helen, a missionary who has worked among Bhils in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh says the first step is to send a reconnaissance team to the target area to find out if a church is already under construction. The team would also need to study the area and understand its problems.

Armed with this basic information, modern missionaries are expected to work out a sound socio-economic plan for the area. This could include simple things to make the lives of locals better, such as starting a school, a health centre, new self-help groups. It is only after a minimum of five years of such groundwork that a Christian denomination actually starts to talk to local leaders about building a church.

The proposed church would initially be paid for by bigger ones in the cities but it is expected to become self-supporting and entirely locally-managed within 15 years. After that, it is time for the missionary to move on and adopt a new place.

Unfortunately this is in Malayalam, but traces Kandhamal history and violence right from Aug 2007 and exposes the media hypocrisy in India.
It exposes “The Hindu” and other main stream secular very well and how falsely everything is blamed on VHP and BJP when they are not even present there.
The root of all this is clash between Pana (Dalits) and Kui (STs). But our christian friends made Panas to convert to christianity and the whole clash which was going for more than years now took communal color.
