It was no accident that Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP Leader Narendra Modi promised the setting up of a “Security University” on Independence Day.
He castigated terrorism and reiterated his government?s resolve not to allow it to ?flourish? in the State. He said terrorists were using modern technology and weaponry. ?We need to arm the security forces with similar knowledge and technology to match the terror groups.? Mr. Modi said the ?Security University? would be exclusively for those students who wanted to make protection of the State and the nation their profession. They would be trained in modern technology to fight terrorism.
The Merchant of Death to Terrorism clearly had his sights on not just a scientific approach to investigative the recent blasts in Ahmedabad but also an institutional approach to build and sustain anti-terror capabilities for the long term.
The results of this determination to fight this War on Terror are visible for all of us to see.
The Gujarat Police have cracked the Ahmedabad Blasts case.
The details of the investigation thus far has been widely reported so Offstumped will not go into them. Its worthwhile however to note a few aspects of the investigation.
In the aftermath of the Bangalore Blasts Offstumped had observed that the choice of sites had one common aspect – proximity to Wipro Offices. That the designer of the bombs was a former Wipro Employee is an interesting coincidence, perhaps there is more here that needs to be looked into.
Another interesting observation was the Mumbai connection, something Offstumped highlighted in the context of the ongoing tussle to control Madrassas in Mumbai.

After his arrest in Lucknow on Saturday morning, The court of Lucknow Chief Judicial Magistrate Sapna Singh granted 3 days transit remand of Mufti Abu bashr.
Abu bashr was then immediately taken to Ahmedabad in a special chartered plane. Plane reached to the city of Ahmedabad at around 10:30 in the evening. Amidst high presence of media he was quickly taken to undeclared place for interrogation.
Meanwhile as soon as the news of Mufti’s arrest spread, fraction of journalists from media have started to knock door of Mufti’s house and releasing news stories quoting his parents that he was innocent. Such stories were also planted by fraction of media after recent arrests of Abdul Halim in Ahmedabad and Sajeed Mansuri in Bharuch in connection to Ahmedabad blasts quoting their wives that their men are innocents.
Gujarat police chief P.C. Pande in his press conference on Saturday said “I have no complain if media doesn’t help the police at all. But by mistake or due to over excitement friends in media representing the things in a manner that may help Anti-nation elements. I had recently nearly a verbal fight with some friends in media on this issue.”
A commendable feat indeed in such a short span of time for Gujarat govt. and they are worthy of praise, bouquets from all patriotic Indians.On the other hand, brickbats have all started as is evident from that joker Lalu’s pronouncement, as mentioned by Gujjuman in post# 47 under “Rethinking Kashmir…” post.

I heard in one of the TV reports that one of the important clues was that 5 SIM cards were purchased at the same time, all with only incoming calls etc. My details may be vague since I heard the report on TV while having another conversation.
I am curious though as to why investigators would make the important / crucial clues public since the next time, similar terrorists will avoid the past mistakes. If such clues become public during the court proceedings, that is a different story. In the mean time, we should not be educating these idiots on how to avoid some of the mistakes that got them in “trouble” in the past.

There is NO NEED to make this kind of stuff public. Only the results (arrests) and minor details should be made public. Just as terrorists many a times mislead investigators, investigators need to mislead them by not making cricual details public and by making irrelevant details public.
Also, if some human intelligence came from Muslim sources, cops should have thanks such sources (without naming them & the nature / details of their inputs) by just saying at the press conference that clues from Hindu and muslim citizenary helped in solving the case. This would (1) take the wind out of MSM in trying to paint this as Hindu vs. Muslim issue, in helping dissuade any perceptions that(a) Gujrat police blindly goes in to harass any muslim with fake arrests (b) all muslims are sympathetic to terrorists, (c) muslims do not cooperate w/ Gujrat police. Such appreciation would also prompt more muslims to come forward in proving any information in the future. In the end, we need help of every nationalist what ever their religion, to get rid of this menace of terrorism.

I wondered about the same thing too, but perhaps some of the detective methods that the cops used cannot be kept a secret because they’ll have to be mentioned in the courts anyway. In this case the SIM cards and phone calls are vital evidence.
Staging the Ahmedabad-blasts kind of terrorist activity requires a lot of coordination amongst various jihadi operatives. Given the dependencies, something or the other is bound to give the terrorists’ game away — if only the cops have smarts, the will and the technological support to unravel it. That’s one of the reasons why the bigger terrorist outfits prefer suicide bombing, I guess. It offers the possibility of leaving no trail.

My very next sentence was “If such clues become public during the court proceedings, that is a different story.” If the court proceedings do not start, say, for another 6 months, then any planned terrorist acts until then should not have benefited from covering their bases on this one until then. Also, the readership for such news is high now but will not be as high throughout he court proceedings. Hence such vital clues will have a limited audience then. The point being, the more such vital clues are delayed from being made public and the more limited public exposure to such clues, the better for the society.
