Rethinking Kashmir Politics

Offstumped is no fan of the Counter Currents or the communal socialists who write in it. But this one by Yoginder Sikhand caught this blogger’s attention for its plain speak on the malaise in Kashmir’s muslim majoritarian politics.

I?have heard Kashmiris, including some of my closest friends, come up with the most ingenious arguments to counter the above point. ?Kashmiriyat, the teachings of love and peace of our Sufis, unite us all and would ensure that non-Muslim minorities will be safe and protected in a free Jammu and Kashmir?, some of them say. A laughable claim, unless all Kashmiris suddenly decide to shun the world and trod the mystical path, an unlikely prospect. Sufism is in a rapid state of decline in Kashmir and elsewhere, as is the case with all other forms of mysticism.

Clearly, any forced union of the disparate nationalities in Jammu and Kashmir in the form of a separate, independent state that Kashmiri nationalists champion (as now do even some Kashmiri Islamists, former passionate advocates for union with Pakistan, who, flowing with the tide, have realized that their earlier stance has increasingly few takers among Kashmiris, given their mounting disenchantment with Pakistan) would be a sure recipe for civil war. The current agitation in Jammu is ample evidence of that. It is time, therefore, that pro-?Azadi? Kashmiri leaders admit this publicly.

Kashmiri nationalists, however, would refuse to recognize this basic contradiction in their argument. The reason is obvious: To do so, to recognize that the Jammu?s Hindus (and Leh?s Buddhists) would resist, even to the point of violence, the agenda of an independent Jammu and Kashmir would clearly indicate the obvious, but embarrassing fact, that this agenda represents the aspirations and interests largely of Kashmiri Muslims, and is a means to legitimize Kashmir Muslim control over the rest of the state

Independent Jammu & Kashmir? Are these Kashmiri nationalists smoking a joint or what? Just for the sake of argument if we assume that this so-called ‘independent Kashmir’ is no longer a figment of imagination, that it will become a reality someday, do these K-nationalists really think that its gonna survive a single day without Pakistan ready to gobble them up or breathing down its neck! A land-locked region with no access to the outside world, with no prospects of economic progress or moreso with its chances of becoming another dumping ground for refugees from across the border, sure then they can cry hoarse about their so-called Kashmiriyat (esp when the demographic profile really changes with diff ethnecities streaming across the border into their beloved Kashmir).

Its like what Rajiv Gandhi said (for once some intelligent verbose did escape his mouth) about Khalistani separitists dreaming about Khalistan, that they shouldn’t forget that Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s capital was Lahore…;)

Also, this day-dreaming about independent K by K-nationalists reminds me about grand claims made by Bibi Amar Jot Kaur, head of the Akhand Kirtani Jattha (woman separatist wing of Khalistan, similar to the current Dukhtraane Millat of Srinagar), when asked about geographical aspects of Khalistan by some journalist way back in ‘85, heyday of Khalistani movement. She talked about how it will span the whole of Punjab, with its flag flying high from the ramparts of Red Fort, Delhi and the south border of Khalistan extending all the way till Bombay…n I m thinking like, man people should indeed dream, even if those dreams might be akin to, what you call ‘Shekh Chilli ke Sapne’ (roughly translated: building castles in the air/day-dreaming), its what keep these loonies going.

So in the current context, the talk about Kashmiriyat by these K-nationalists is nothing but a smokescreen for all their pretensions to merge or join Pakistan someday.

Sometimes I do wonder as to can’t these morons see the current state of their beloved brethren across the border, living in a failed state, with chances of any progress nil whatsoever, but then I am reminded as to what they really want…a region of their own with Sharia ruling the roost, with Islam weighing in all aspects of lives a la Afghanistan ruled by Talibaan, that is what these K-nationalists dream about, and hope to make it a realty someday.

Bollocks….J & K is cent percent ours. No question about it. I wont even mind paying ever increasing taxes till my last breath.

K nationalists are nothing but the MINORITY separatists, Kashmiri Muslims themselves know of their condition under the Pakis. This is from an army officer whom I know of.

One must know the way islam thinks:
    Islam Divides the World

Islamic social science divides the world in two parts.

    1. Darul Harb: The nation of infidals (kafirs), area of war, is that place where people have not yet accepted Islam.

    2. Darul Islam: Meaning that nation where people have adopted Islam. To convert the entire world into Darul Islam (area of peace) is the declared aim of Islam. Instructions have been issued for carrying out relentless struggle for achieving the establishment of the Islamic rule wherever it has not been set up yet. It means that Muslims living in non-Muslim countries will not settle in peace by cooperating with the local basic society, its culture and traditions. They will remain active in their search for establishing Darul Islam. The basic tenets of Islam do not accept any other religion. Therefore, it is considered religious to annex non-Muslim countries and then join them in the “Milat” (Muslim world)

We fall under the second category, so whatever one does negotiates, conferences, peace talks, these fagotts will go against us.

Someday, 10 Million Indians will have to join the army and fight this threat once and for all.

The recent events indicate why I’ve always felt that when people use the term “Kashmiri”, they’d better qualify it as Kashmiri Muslim or Hindu, because the stances of the two communities are poles apart and have been so.

As a KP, let me just say that this “Kashmiriyat” thing is nothing more than an illusion, branded about by those who aim to portray Kashmiri Muslims as victims rather than the perpetrators.

Also, lets not forget that the Gujars and Bakarwals(..who are Muslims too..) of Rajouri and Poonch regions are not as supportive of the call for Azadi emanating from Srinagar either, at least not as far as I felt from my last visit there in 1999.

Here read a Gora’s Birthday wishes for India:

    Happy Birthday India..!
    By Robert Clements
There’s a big birthday bash for India today, as all the countries line up to greet the young sixty-one year old. “ Happy Birthday India!” says China as it marches up with jade bowl gift and a smirk, “May you become as great a super power as I am!”
“I already am,” smiles India, “with a billion people who can think what they want to, say what they like to and not get butchered in Tiananmen Square when trying to express themselves, I am a super power!”
“May your rulers rule long!” sniggers Pakistan.
“Ah,” smiles India indulgently, “my rulers rule as long as my people wish them too, not like your khaki clad goons who rule with guns and subdue the will of the people. My rulers are the people, and may their rule be long!”
Tibet who has been standing behind China and Pakistan, smiles and goes up to India, “I wish you peace my friend!”
“Thank you,” says India hugging the bleeding country, “I wish you the same; that you be allowed to get back the freedom you deserve, that the great dragon bully who crushes your people will be thrown out by peaceful methods, and that your Dalai Lama may return from his country of exile.”
“But there is bloodshed in your country!” cries Burma, “People are burnt and raped!”
“But,” whispers the young sixty-one year old, “I have courts not guns like yours which clamp down, and even if they take time, bring justice to all!”
    “Bomb blasts!” shouts Pakistan angrily.
“Your bombs and your blasters!” says India quietly.
“Happy Birthday India,” shouts the confident voice of the USA, “Don’t see too many gold medals being won at the Games though!”
“Ah no Mr America, we’re too busy winning with IT and software and earning your dollars while emptying the coffers of Fort Knox!”
“You have a million soldiers,” says Russia after greeting India, “Send some to Georgia, we’ll pay you good money.”
“Ah no Boris, bringing down legitimate governments, then bullying and wiping them out is not our cup of tea, even if your President gifts us aircraft carrier free!”
“You are cheeky for a young sixty-one year old!”
“Sixty-one years of democracy gives you more right to be cheeky than a hundred years of dictatorial communism! Right?”
“Happy Birthday mate! I dare say you’ve grown confident and bold!” says England as she stretches out gloved hand.
“Thank you,” says India shyly, “After you left my shores, I tottered and stumbled, slipped sometimes, and fell often, but got up, stood, and walked, sometimes shakily, often crawling. I was chided, criticized, chastised and chastened, but pushed on with grit into my long walk with freedom! Now I’m ready to move on to greater heights!”
“Happy Birthday India..!” applauds the World together.

  5. Vikas says:

Kashmiriyat is a guise for Muslim seperatism, devised because in the present political parlance it is not fashionable to pursue seperatism in the name of religion. I fail to understand how Kashmiriyat is different from Punjabi, Sindhi or Bengali identities. All these identities were swallowed by pan Islamism. The same has happened in Kashmir when KPs have been thrown out by the KMs. It is surprising to see how some supposedly unbiased intellectuals still fall for this crap.
Post no. 3>> Gujars of Jammu and Doda region are not fully with the valley Muslims only because they are numerically disadvantaged against their Hindu neighbours. If they acquire a numerically critical mass they are sure to follow the valley way.

BTW, agree with Vikas about Gujjars being numerically disadvantaged, hence not supporting the valley Muslims. In that context, it needs to be remembered time-n-again: that the problem with Muslims is, where they are in a minority, they talk about democratic rights, where they in a majority, they fight for theocracy.

  8. Vivek says:

Yoginder sikand is a cheap scapegoat..

  9. Jiggs says:

The fact remains that writer after writer all over has indicated the thing that Sootradhar has pointed out: “the problem with Muslims is, where they are in a minority, they talk about democratic rights, where they in a majority, they fight for theocracy.”

Why yesterday, I read about the protest’s by the 5000 strong crowd at lal chowk Srinagar, shouting, YAHAAN KYA CHALEGA, NIZAM E MUSTAFA(Islamic way of life).

This must be crushed if we are to PRETEND to be a secular nation.

Else, declare this a Hindu nation and then take on these Islamists.

  13. Balaji says:

Your are barking up the wrong tree. Hurriyat would welcome the separation of Ladakh and Jammu from Kashmir. Kashmiri nationalism is precisely that. Kashmir’s. Not the artificial state of Jammu and Kashmir in the Indian union.

I’m all for a plebiscite in Kashmir to decide its future, creation of Jammu state and Ladakh as union territory. Ladakh and Tawang could also be returned to Tibet in the unlikely case that it gains independence from China.

  14. Chanakya says:

    Err Balaji,

At the time of Independence muslims in the sub continent were around 25% but walked away with more than 30% of Akhand Bharat. Worse still 100% of them did not leave India, they left around 30% back. So no question of giving any more land. If any we need to recover PoK and PONA.

As for valley rage boys who are desperate to become pakis, they are free to cross over to the other side and live up to their dreams. In fact a lot of Indians would be ready to buy them one way ticket to their dreamland.

Nocturnal protests create panic in Kashmir
Srinagar, Aug 16 (IANS) An uneasy quiet descended here early Saturday after nocturnal protests called by the separatist Hurriyat Conference, during which people in some areas beat tin roofs and shouted slogans against security forces, creating panic in the Kashmir Valley.

Repeated announcements were made through mosque loudspeakers late Friday, asking people to come out on their rooftops and protest against the alleged police and paramilitary excesses.

People also observed a ‘black out’ for one hour by switching off electric bulbs in many areas.

A few private vehicles could be seen plying in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir Saturday morning after days of shutdown and curfew.

Though there was no shutdown call for the day, separatist leaders asked people to take out processions to the south Kashmir town of Pampore, 16 km from here, where they will pay tributes to their slain colleague Sheikh Abdul Aziz.

Aziz was killed in police firing Aug 11, when thousands of Kashmiris, alleging an ‘economic blockade’ by Jammu protesters, attempted to cross over the the Line of Control (LoC) – the de-facto border between India and Pakistan – in north Kashmir.

The valley has been witnessing unprecedented violence and public frenzy following the bitter Amarnath land row, which has nearly brought the state to the brink of division on religious lines.

More than 40 people have died, mostly in police firing, in the last two months of violent protests in Hindu-dominated Jammu and mainly Muslim Kashmir Valley.

Recall that the khalistanis would prefer to consumer cyanide and die than fall into the punjab police’s hands…That says something, I daresay.

The tamasha of having open and free trial in court for the apologist who cooperated gets the message across to all who matter ion the jihadi world that there’re gains to be made in this world by cooperating with the police.

And the message is sent to shady stubborns in the jihadist underworld that not cooperating has its pains in this world and the next. How do we know that the message has not gone out that martyred jihadists are not buried wrapped in pigskin (and therefore forfeit heaven and are condemned to hell)? This was precisely the tactic US Gen ‘Blackjack’ Pershing used in the philipines at the turn of the last century to bury an islamist guerilla insurrection then. For obvious reasons, such things are not spoken about loudly now but those who need to know, know, I guess.

Am not normally one to applaud extra-constitutional methods and even now, wouldn’t want such used even on these b@sturds who’d murder our families in a heartbeat without remorse. In open war, even the scarosanct Haebus corpus goes outta the window, I hear.

Suspected mastermind of Ahd blasts was employed by Wipro

    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-3371606,prtpage-1.cms

MUMBAI : One of the suspected masterminds in the Ahmedabad serial blasts was a former employee with an information technology firm who quit his job to join the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), police officials said here on Saturday.

The suspect, an engineer by education, was employed in a direct sales agency of information technology firm Wipro in Mumbai between 1996 and 1998, Anti-Terrorism Squad sources said here.

“In 1998 he quit his job to join SIMI and was involved in their activities since then,” the sources said but refused to divulge his name.

However, the suspect allegedly a resident of Mumbai was last seen in Bangalore some time back following which his whereabouts are being traced, they said.

ATS chief Hemant Karkare refused to comment on the matter.

“We would not like to share the information presently since it could hamper investigations,” he said.

According to the Gujarat police, the suspect was involved with alleged blasts mastermind Mufti Abu Bashir in planning the serial blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26 which claimed 55 lives.

They also suspect that he may have been involved in sending the threatening email from the alleged terror group Indian Mujahideen a few minutes prior to the blasts.

The Internet Protocol (IP) address from which the email was sent traced to an American national’s internet connection in Navi Mumbai. At least eight persons, including American national Ken Haywood, have undergone scientific tests like brain mapping and polygraph tests in the matter.

Oh man, only Muslims ‘feel’ hurt, no mention about the travesty inflinged upon the majority community since independence & esp last 20n years…I guess only Muslim lives matter…Hindus…well they r dime-a-dozen…their lives are not worth shedding a single tear for.

The likes of Azmi, the ultimate representative of the chatteratti & arm-chair intellectuals…nothing more then the usual obfuscation & wordplay could be expected from this ’social activist’, and here I was thinking that age must have mellowed this frothing-at-mouth bleeding-heart-liberal (btw, her heart only bleeds for minorities esp Muslims), how wrong I was?

    OT, but sort of related,

“Some men aren’t looking for anything logical, They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

    From the movie Dark Knight,

Wonder which men they are talking about? Sound to me a awful like the nizam-e-whatever f****rs we been fighting in Kashmir, the pakis, the bangladeshis or the indian mujahidden/SIMI bunch (rest in peace thanks to the Merchant O’ Death)

If “Some men just want to watch the world burn.” Wouldnt the world be a much better place, to watch ‘them evil men burn’?

Yes, indeed it would be…but we gotta make sure Aryan buddy that the fire they engulf themselves in stays controlled, limited to around them, and we should have our defences shored up so as not to let it reach our shores…;)

Advani congratulates Gujarat govt for busting terrorist network
New Delhi | Sabtu, Agust 16 2008 IST

Praising the Modi government for its efforts, the Leader of the Opposition said,” This success shows what a government determined to deal firmly with the menace of terrorism can achieve in a short time.” Blaming the UPA Government at the Centre for the utter lack of clarity and will power in handling the threat of terrorism, he asked the Centre to recommend immediate Presidential assent for the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Act (GCOCA), which has been pending with the Centre since June 2004. ”The UPA government’s refusal to do so thus far has proved that it doggedly wants to pursue its policy of appeasement of terrorist elements in the country,” Mr Advani alleged.

Who would have thunk that it Yoginder Sikand of all people would explode the farcical idea of Kashmiriyat – just a polite way of saying Jihadiyat. There’s never been any such thing in Kashmir Vale for over 50 years now. The forced migration of Kashmiri Pandits that began in 1953 became an expulsion, pogrom and genocide in 1989.

  48. Sootradhaar says:

YossBoss…could you please do a post on the following utterances of Ms. Shabana Azmi:

“…that Indian democracy lacks the understanding of security for minorities while Indian politics makes only ‘token gestures’ to Muslims but never addresses the ‘real issues’ afflicting them.”

On Independence Day, they pulled down the tricolour at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk and hoisted their own green-coloured flag. It is a measure of how utterly badly the affairs of Jammu & Kashmir have been handled over the past six decades by most governments at the state and national levels.

Many of my secularists friends in media support giving independence to kashmir. My only question to them was why only Kashmir how about to Nagaland, Manipur , Assam and then to TN so that they can dream of Akhand TN alongwith LTTE.

I mean why stop at Kashmir better to break up the country so that all the secularists are satisfied and happy.

    Guys,
Sorry to come in with some not so liberal views.
Great nations were not built by taking into account the feelings of every tom, prick and harry.
America, Canada, Australia whatever, just to name a few were built on the bloody bones of their indigenous peoples.
While I am not suggesting that we do the same in Kashmir, let us all truly see it for what it really is, a property squabble. With water at its very root, core issue as mush was wont to say. Don’t burn down your house to rid yourself of a few vermin.
The english managed to have their way with australia, america, canada etc because the existing civilizations there were not advanced enough to resist or overcome the invasion, whatever the form it took.
No tom, prick or harry gave a toss as to who was butchered. They went in and grabbed more than their share while the grabbing was good.
India is a different ball game. The cross and the crescent ( sounds like a cheap pub! ) did not succeed because civilizationally and culturally we were stronger and more advanced. But I have never understood the weak military force that our civilization seems to prefer. We lack long term memory, the capacity for strategic thought and the crab story is very true. We seem doomed to relive the past.
We are not a developing nation but a redeveloping one. In sixty odd years we have risen like the phoenix and are back in stride again.
This, mind you, after being raped, pillaged and beggared for countless centuries by barbarians of all hues.
This has to touch some very raw nerves.
We were the only country that resisted islam for centuries and will comfortably continue to do so. The cross and the crescent are giving it the good old college try all over again.
Having failed the first time around, they are using the same methods again albeit a bit modernized.
Our freedom to speak has brought the loonies out of the woodwork. Even the greatest in christianity and islam did not have the freedom of speech. They never said that they were god but vaguely, slyly hinted at it in a very round about way. They would have been killed had the explicitly said so.
Are these the religions that claim to be better????
The pagan Hindus all claimed to be god, every village has its own little living god, fed and revered by the local people as god.
We have millions of them, one for each occasion, festival and season. This is true liberalism, freedom of speech and freedom of spirit. This is why we welcomed and sheltered all comers, even those wretches who would do us harm by using our given freedoms, to malign and abuse us.
We are pagans who launch satellites and build nuclear reactors.
Again, this has to touch some very raw nerves.
Let us build our India. If there has to be a little bloody pile of bones then so be it.
Greatness does not come from pussyfooting around. Its payback time
