Boycott CNN-IBN

The BJP has announced a boycott of CNN-IBN for its refusal to air the tapes pertaining to the Cash for Votes Scandal.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is deeply dismayed by the decision of CNN-IBN not to telecast the “notes-for-votes” sting operation, which the channel conducted with the cooperation of three BJP MPs. The whole country watched with shock and disbelief when the three MPs produced wads of currency notes on the floor of the Lok Sabha on July 22 shortly before the Trust Vote was taken. The money was paid to Shri Ashok Argal, BJP MP, at his residence by a person representing a senior Samajwadi Party leader as “advance” for the MPs to abstain from voting that afternoon. The entire episode and the background that led to that transaction, was filmed through hidden cameras by a CNN-IBN team. Subsequently, the channel interviewed all the three MPs as a prelude to the promised telecast of the tapes.

More than a week has passed since one of the most sordid events in India’s Parliamentary history was captured on camera. Now the channel says that it has not aired the tapes since the investigation is “incomplete” and has some “loose ends”. This contention flies in the face of all accepted ethics of professional journalism. The job of the media is to bring information gathered by it into the public domain. It is not for a TV channel or newspaper to complete investigations and pronounce a verdict. That job must be left to investigating agencies and the judicial process.

Only one conclusion can be drawn from the channel’s volte-face : It has come under severe pressure from the Government and/or certain corporate houses. Consequently, it has not only broken its promise to the MPs to telecast the scandalous episode immediately, but also denied the people of India their sacrosanct right to information in a matter of the highest public importance. It is now up to CNN-IBN to disprove this lingering suspicion.

The mere handling over of the tapes to the Lok Sabha Speaker, that too after a mysterious lapse of 24 hours, is not adequate. Since the entire country saw wads of notes being waved inside the House, the people have the right to know about the origin and circumstances leading to this unprecedented display. The BJP MPs acted in the highest national interest as whistle-blowers on a scandal that dwarfs all previous incidents of parliamentarians being lured with cash to vote in a particular way.

The channel’s statement dated July 29, 2008 makes it virtually clear that it has no intention of allowing the people of India to witness the shameful actions of top leaders of the ruling alliance who discarded every norm of public morality to the wind in a desperate bid to save the already tainted Manmohan Singh Government.

In the background of the sting operation’s obduracy, the BJP has been compelled to decide that it will boycott CNN-IBN and channels related to it till such time as the unedited tapes of the “notes-for-votes” scandal are telecast. Till then no BJP functionary in Delhi or in the states will appear on CNN-IBN programmes, whether in their studios or outside. The BJP believes that the channel’s decision to withhold the tapes from the public seriously compromises the freedom of the Press. The party regrets that instead of upholding the right to information, CNN-IBN has resorted to the suppression of truth.

Even at this stage, the BJP calls upon the channel to revise its decision and telecast the tapes without any further delay. The party will happily review its decision to boycott CNN-IBN as soon as the tapes are aired. The BJP, needless to add, remains deeply committed to preserve and protect the freedom of the press and is prepared to assist, in whatever way possible, media organisations to withstand Government and corporate interference in their working.

Offstumped Bottomline: That CNN-IBN has always been biased is not news. That CNN-IBN does not even care for a pretense?of objectivity is not news. That CNN-IBN does not even believe in performance ethics or journalistic standards is not news. What is however news is that CNN-IBN thinks it can still survive as a viable business with this suicidal stance. This is an unprecedented stance by?the principal Opposition against a media house in post emegency democratic India. It is unfathomable how CNN-IBN?expects to survive if it doesnt dig itself out of the hole it finds itself in.

Absolultely right decision on BJP’s part…better late then never! And now, the icing on the cake would be, if the general public, esp BJP supporters, boycott it too…and also since BJP is still considered by many ’sickularists’ to be a party of traders, why not the businesses that advertise on this wreteched channel yank-off their advertising (the public should boycott these businesses too, if they don’t follow the lead…see strike where it hurts…and as they say in Hindi: “Chaandi ka joota bahut zor ki maar kartaa hai!”…;)and this would totally in compliance, for once, with Gandhi’s concept of non-cooperation) and then when the advertising revenue starts drying up…then only will this blotch on journalism get a much desired lesson (or not…as it is supported by foreign funding with deep pockets).

Better than all this, as many posters on this foru, urs truly included, have suggested…BJP should start its own channel to counter such propoganda vehicles of the forces hell-bent on destroying India!

While MSM was over the moon criticizing Sushma Swaraj who even didn’t mention Congress’ name, here is what the editorial(?) of one of CPIM mouthpieces has to say about Modi:

“They say he’s different Modi now. Not a rioter anymore, seller of dreams for Gujarat. “Benevolent Modi”!! But there is a crucial difference. He arranged for the genocide to consolidate the votes, because BJP was loosing ground in the upcoming election. In a highly communally charged environment coupled with extreme fear, he won the assembly election. But during this time when the blasts happened in Ahmedabad, he has no fear to loosing the votes. Main priority now is to maintain peace. This is the duty of a chief minister that he forgot last time. There is another difference. During that time with the help of police and goons he killed the gentle and unsuspecting minorities, burned down many a localities. A number of ministers were engaged in direct action for rioting as ordered from Modi, stopped the police in taking any step – all these had been proved later. But now, has Modi changed? Has those Sanghi-goons changed? Bajpayee advised him to keep ‘Rajdharma’ intact after the genocide, Modi didn’t care. Now this time he cordially welcomed the advices of Manmohan and Shivraj. Even he welcomed Sonia. This is not because there is no need for creating communal tension. This is because the affected people are not minorities only and people behind the blasts are immensely powerful. Killing gentle, unsuspecting and unarmed people is very easy, but countering the powerful terrorists is altogether a different ball-game. Taking help from the Centre and offering olive branches is the only way out. Which is not that bad also. This is the duty of a state government. And he is compelled to do that. But that doesn’t mean that Narendra Modi has changed. He is now what he was. You can not make a coal white by washing repeatedly.”

  3. msr says:

very good move by BJP, the BJP should have taken this decision much earlier.

  4. Martian says:

They should’ve done this long back. Doing it now makes it even more good timing though.

It’s a good move by BJP, except that they shouldn’t panic and retreat after an onslaught from other media houses, which is very much likely to happen. They should confront IBN from the platform of REST of the media with full strength to defend their action with various facts of media partisan.

Kudos to BJP for having some Balls finally.

Why stop there, why not ask BJP supporters to boycott CNN-IBN and the products of corporates that advertise on it’s channel ? Kick em where it hurts.
Start an online petition, get enough support, and send emails to corporate houses. If thats too much work, send emails regardless expressing your annoyance at biased reporting and their sponsor of it.

either way its a good step, BJP has finally decided to take the fight directly to those pseudo-secular jhollawallahs.

  6. Martian says:

    imo
Even a complete blockade by the corporates is not going to affect or change CNN-IBN. Afterall we all know its not a business running on and for revenues.

With bluntly known Funding sources running costs with out corporate support, will be just peanuts thrown at the monkeys.

  7. Aryan says:

    martian,

either way, let the ‘funding sources’, come up with even more moolah to finance their propoganda, is all.

  8. Bharat says:

This is what I was appealing to the fellow Bharatiya for a long time, to boycott this channel and perhaps also NDTV (and few mainstream newspapers too).

Better late than never. All patriotic and well-wishers of Bharat and Bharatiya arise and act by boycotting an anti-BJP, anti-Hindu, anti-national, and pro-Jihadi Congress mouth-piece called CNN-IBN. CNN-IBN is busy with their pet Gujarat-bashing, Modi-bashing once they got the news of serial bomb-blasts.

Boycott is the effective instrument to teach a lession to any news-media and business.

  9. Chanakya says:

    Two Cheers for BJP!!!!!

(why not three cheers? you might ask. The answer is that I would have preferred much harsher language to be used against the channel)

NOW DO NOT BACK TRACK ON THIS VERY VERY GOOD DECISION!!!!!!
    :-)

  10. proud Indian says:

BJP took the right decision bang on target. they gave CNNIBN enough time to air the tapes, now that CNNIBN has come out saying it will not air the tapes… BJP struck and Struck hard… full credit to them.

i wonder how will Rajdeep earn his TRP with NO SHOW from BJP…. after all they were his ACEs to earn TRP.

As regards the comments on Mr Modi…. seems these people are yet to “understand” him.

he followed Rajdharma by welcoming the PM of the country while welcoming Sonia Gandhi was a bye product. ( we all know MS can’t move around without Madam )

  11. Another Indian says:

Finally some sensible decision from BJP!!!

  12. Martian says:

Its very important not to backtrack or budge under pressure after a likely backlash from other media houses, which will come in support for Slurdesai.

  13. Prasanna says:

Looks like there are few sensible people left in BJP

    Hats off

  14. gujjuman says:

this is the right thing to do. and i dont think it came late. they gave ibn a long enough rope. waiting for that grand-standing statement from the channel and then quoting from that to hit back is right.

i already had ibn blocked on my tv for a long time. after the tape-gate, i blocked tv18 as well. tv18 was becoming a bunch of cr*p anyways. i gave ndtv some benefit of doubt after their better coverage on karnataka polls. but when they brought mallika sarabhai on the day of gujarat blasts and gushed over how great it is to have her smile at a bjp minister, i blocked them again. i have times now, and i really dont need much tv noose.

it is disgusting the way political and business interests play, and bjp is right in hitting at that and not just a specific channel. i remember that during the sacrifice episode in may 2004, cnbc-tv18’s senthil chengalvarayan was running a programme titled ‘italian opera’. he appears to be still with tv18.

this news is not in other sites yet, not even rediff. the media may entirely ignore it – advani’s letter to speaker pointing out to the chances of tapes being tampered was ignored. Or they may work into a frenzy on media ‘freedom’.

  21. Ot says:

Ok. At last some show of spine by this supine party. But why are they afriad to state the obvious: that CNNIBN is boot-licker of the Congress, and is in fact acting in concert with the Congress?

  22. Prasanna says:

    Hi Yossarin

    Great going.Some random rambling

1.As i pointed out earlier you have been doing a yeoman service to the cause of the online public discourse in the country by taking on the strangehold of the “babalog” dominated Dhimmedia .

While winds of changes are sweeping all areas of human endeavour in India, its media+ politics that continue to be two most regressive ,anti-meritocratic fields in India. The tyrannical domination of the left-liberal metropolitan uber-liberal from affluent ,well networked upper class continues unabated in media world .This needs to be dismantled

2.I believe that BJP is genuinely nationalistic but deeply flawed organisation. Its important that they are not caught in a time warp and strive to model themselves as a learning organisation.

Good to know that you are able to influence, albeit in a small way a very important organisation in India
I think your Flatworld Hindutva is a seminal piece of thinking that needs to be expanded further

  23. Ot says:

Sorry, need to reword my comment:

Ok. At last some show of spine by this supine party. But why are they afriad to state the obvious: that CNNIBN is boot-licker of the government, and is in fact acting in concert with the government?

  24. Ot says:

    >>While winds of changes are sweeping all areas of human endeavour in India, its media+ politics that continue to be two most regressive ,anti-meritocratic fields in India.

    Well put Prasanna.

  25. yossarin says:

Prasanna – thanks but the credit goes to the democratic mindset and culture that messrs Vajpayee and Advani have engendered in the BJP. Its the first and only mainstream party today with its ear close to the ground to listen to feedback from the NextGen of Indians as that feedback echoses across the blogosphere and online communities. The Congress may have the babalog but it is the culture and mindset that matters not the age.

  26. Ot says:

Does BJP have a strategy to deal with the fallout of its boycott? There is a strong unionism of sorts in the media. Congress media like CNNIBN, HT, Indian Express, ToI etc band together to battle their benefactor’s rivals: BJP mostly, and commies at times of crisis like the one seen recently. Behind the scenes there are strong jealousies and many in the Congress media will happily slit each others’ throats. But they do close ranks to fight Congress’ rivals, because they see them as a threat to the existing order of rent-seeking that they have gotten used to.

  27. prashant says:

    ot,

all MSM has been Exposed so even if they come together will make no impact.
In fact till today they all are ganged up but even then BJP winning one after other.

  28. Puneet says:

Great Move … I hope NDTV is next in line ..

  29. prashant says:

i think BJP next move should be to “Engage” Speaker Somnath and remind him of his Duty as a Custodian of Parliament.

BJP MUST EXPOSE SPEAKER SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

  30. gujjuman says:

I think this was good stop. But BJP should now concentrate of issues at hand. If BJP starts boycotting every news channel the returns of boycotting will diminish. Let their be only one outcast.

  31. anon says:

“I think BJP next move should be to “Engage” Speaker Somnath and remind him of his Duty as a Custodian of Parliament.”

they must. if yossarin is right about bjp listening in on a bunch of us disheartened losers commenting here, i hope they do follow up.

i called them idiots for trusting ibn with the sting in the first place. i apologize.

“Let their be only one outcast.”

but using this one episode they should set the terms of engagement with the media. editor in chiefs jumping in their chairs on bjp losing an election, or editors shaming themselves by projecting a early lead for congress in an election that they lost miserably – they need to know there will be a reaction.

  32. Absolutely. CNN IBN is pretty stupid when it says it has the tapes but won’t show them because they have to do more investigation.

What is more galling is they have handed over the tapes to the government, but won’t show it to the Indian people! They’re making fun of democracy.

  33. anon says:

“What is more galling is they have handed over the tapes to the government, but won’t show it to the Indian people!”

there are multiple reports that say some of the tapes are ‘dark, nothing visible’, and all tapes have no clear audio.

so make it ‘they wont show the *untampered tapes* to indian people’.

  34. palash says:

    anon,

Cash-gate became a mini-masterstroke from BJP to expose some part of ‘media’. Now its time to expose ‘oh-so-perfect’ Somnathda who is likely to get a lucrative job before the 2009 polls for not releasing the tape thus helping the goverment and that pimp.

  35. Prasanna says:

Is that me alone who is noticing a concerted campaign by the usual suspects in MSM to turn that quintessential Stalinist tyrant in to some kind of benevolent elder statesman who stood up and martyred for cause of parliamentary democracy .Yes Comrade Somnath bday celebrartion is now prime time news in what is called as burgeoise media in commie parlance

A dubious record of silencing all voice of dissent (eg-outstanding journalist like Swapan and eminent men like Subash Kayshap came under his hammer),pummelling opposition voices to submission, displaying rank intolerance for judiciary, hastily conducteing enquiry to expel errand opposition members for what now appears to be a minor peccadillo is also now relegated to history
    are all relegated to background

Cometh the Somnath converetd as a paragon of parliamentary virtues

  36. Ravi says:

Very good move from BJP. Finally they show they have the stomach to take on the media bull by its horns. It would be interesting to see if other TV/print media rallies behind CNN-IBN. But hope that doesn’t happen as they would be helping only their rival in this high stakes media business.

  37. Tathagata Mukherjee says:

This is not just BJP vs CNN-IBN.

Larger issues like freedom of Media is at stake here as a major Indian media surrendered to Govt’s dictat and refused to release the tape.

There is a great danger to Indian state, public, nation from this type of SPINELESS MEDIA.

There was a time when top leaders like Aurobindo Ghosh and so many others who were great newspaper editors as well WENT TO JAIL TO protect Media’s rights.

WAKE UP INDIANS AND SEE THE LARGER GAME OF MANIPULATING MEDIA BY GOVT.

  38. Raghu says:

Finally one good move in weeks!!

Regarding taking on Commies.. Does anyone know why BJP doesn’t call commies ‘Chinese agents’ again and again when they call BJP/Sangh Communal/Gandhi Killers etc?

By this time they should have equated Commies with Chinese agents..

  39. proud Indian says:

    folks,

interestingly i didnot find the news of BJP boycotting IBN on the site of IBN… did i miss it?

Remember how they had made headlines when Mr Modi had walked out on Karan thappar.

  40. Martian says:

    @proud
Yep… except cHindu everybody is completely mum on this. A heavy backlash seems to be coming?!
BJP should be well prepared with strategic ammo to counter this.

  41. Ot says:

The boycott was announced today. How do you expect that to be covered by newspapers already? Crazy or what?

Wait till tomorrow, and we’ll get to know how many journos are quite brazenly in the Congress camp.

  42. Sootradhaar says:

    >>There is a great danger to Indian state, public, nation from this type of SPINELESS MEDIA

@Tathagata…I am all for freedom of press, if it follows some ethics & maintains its objectivity, but not for parroting day-in-day-out its paymasters’ viewpoint…sometimes you cvan just wonder as to the depths to which Indian ELM/MSM has stooped to destroy anything remotely related to India’s pride, nationalism & integrity-sovereignity…what a fall from grace for the media…when it had amongst its crudaers like Ramnath Goenka, Arun Shourie, Girilal Jain et al to the present day celebrity sycophants, masquerading as journalists…Turdesai & many others like him…btw, it surprises me as to how conviniently the media has forgotten the treatment it received at hands of Indira Gandhi during emergency in ‘75…I guess its time they are given a li’l dose of that medicine!

Also, for me, there’s no diff. between Congress, Commies & terrorists & ELM/MSM…they are two sides of the same coin…or as they say in Hindi:

“Ek Naagnath hai, to doosra saapnaath”!

  43. Ot says:

Right To Information Act should include media houses as well. If a media entity has information of public interest in its control, then it must make it public if a citizen pushes for it using RTI.

  44. Ot says:

The strategy of Congress and its flunkey CNNIBN at this point in time would be to bail themselves out by discrediting the three MPs. How would they do it?

I suspect that in the next few days there will be a ’sting’ by Tehelka — who else but these prostituet-peddling ‘journos’ — showing these MPs in a bad light. It will be broadcast prominently by CNNIBN, and of course other channels as well. Is the BJP prepared for it?

  45. Vivek says:

I think this will surely send some jitters to raghav behl and his team n if BJP comes to power in 2009,which it will no doubt bout that,it will be a hell for TV 18..
Checkmate mr sardesai..Ur game is over now..

  46. Sharat says:

Good Decision by BJP to boycott CNN-IBN…..

The public will know now how in the name of “Free Press” these channels are cooking up stories for TRP’s and fooling people….
    Right step in right direction…

  47. Ot says:

The BJP are pussies. Incapable of hitting at and hurting the Congress party’s media henchmen.

But TV18 does need to be investigated, not out of vendetta but for public good. At least one CNBC ‘expert’ is known to have manipulated stock prices using his vantage position on the channel. He advocated a ‘buy’ decision on a lousy scrip without revealing the fact that he held interests in it.

  48. R Prasad says:

Let all democracy loving Indians boycott this partisan CNN-IBN channel which is supporting corruption by not airing the Cash-For-MP-Votes scam of SP and Congress. CNN-IBN is a disgrace to journalism and democracy.

  50. palash says:

    Prasanna,

You are right. The government along with its pet dog media are making a martyred hero out of a cunning Stalinist politician.

As for his ‘unbiasedness’ as a speaker the media comfortably forgot about cash-for-question episode, Jharkhand episode, ‘I’m not holding any office of profit’ episode despite being chairman of SSDA and now cash-for-vote episode.

And now his few ‘great achievements’ -

During Jyoti Basu’s time he was the chairman of WBIDC (West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation). So to ‘attract the FDI’ he and his mentor Jyoti Basu had gone to eurpoe so many times that Tata, Ambani, Mittal can’t achieve together in their lifetime. And the end result you know.

During his chairmanship of WBIDC, Bengal saw the maximum number of Bandhs (mostly Bharat bandh only in Bengal), maximum lockouts and the total shutdown of Jute industry – once the lifeline of four big districts of Bengal.

In the Indira sympathy wave of 84, he decided to contest from a ’safe’ seat against a novice called Mamata and got trounced.

Ironically, his father was once president of Hindu Mahasabha (erstwhile BJP). But once he got converted to Marxism, he hardened his stance to the extreme left side of the spectrum. And Somnath started contesting from his father’s seat – just a remainder to the ‘ever-perfect’ communists who talk about dynasty politics.

    Again…dhimmimedia twisting the facts…

    From the article:

…The knowledge of the bustling city’s topography displayed by the culprits has pointed the needle of suspicion towards what Surat Police Commissioner R.M.S. Brar described as “local support”.

This conclusion has, however, angered many who swear by Surat’s decades-old record of communal harmony…

I guess HT reporter knows something more than what the Police commissoner Mr Brar is not privvy too. The way media has been acting in these cases seems as if it will play the judge, jury & executioner…no need for qualified personnel, holding important posts to offer their views on the prevailing topic…media is what we need…nothing else, no judicial system, no constitutional authorities & no accountability for media to rattle off its own stoopid viewpoint!

  52. socal says:

Interesting decision by BJP. An alternative would serve the party much better than a boycott. Unfortunately, the media remains dominated by Congress keepers and without any alternative. 60 yrs. of monopoly is difficult to get unhinged in a short span of time.

  53. Janpar Mallai says:

Oh good, so now I can tune in into IBN to watch a 24-hour comedy channel: Rajdeep Sardesai, Sagarika Ghose, and top resident clown Yogendra Yadav with luminaries such as Teesta Selvad, Jayawanti Natrajan, Abhishek Singhvi and others. Hourly updates on “King Singh” and Rahulbaba “The coming messiah” and Soniamataji “The mother saviour of all Indians”. But seriously, like mos tof you, i stick with media that at least tries not to inject too much opinion (Maybe TOI, as an example) into their reporting, else for commentary on the nation the Pioneer remains and a few-odd regional newspapers with sense.

  54. Sootradhaar says:

    @Janpar…LOL!..:D

  55. snejo says:

To a QUESTION: If CNN-IBN sticks to its stance, what will BJP do??

But please bear in mind in any case CNN-IBN is a thoroughbred anti-BJP channel. The most positive news about Hindu’s in general and BJP/VHP/RSS in particular are coated with hot pepper all along. So CNN-IBN cannot do much harm any further.

On the contrary, CNN-IBN stands to lose a lot from this sane decision on BJP’s part. How??

1.This is an election mania season starting later this year till mid of 2009. In all states going to elections, the fight is straight BJP VS.congress. If no BJP guys go to CNN-IBN, who will watch a dull debate full of Congress sychophants?????? TRP will shoot SOUTH.

2.BJP has many other channels to air their views and most channel will lap this opportunity (in these days of tabloid and sensational journalism) with both hands and legs to increase their TRP and increase market share.

3.Rapidly dropping TRP for CNN-IBN will probably give a heart attack to Fr. Sardesai, good for us, good for all.

4.With TRP down, who the hell will advertise on this crap CNN-IBN full of amateurs???

    5. Again, as for BJP, CNN-IBN caters to mostly urban population where in any case there is stiff competition. Population in semi-urban , towns and other places have their regional channels for news.

    Jai Hind, Jai Shri Ram

  56. bhanu says:

Yossarin and to all other commentators congratulations.

Someone in BJP is listening to us and taking the right path.

Let BJP know that we the bloggers will stand by it in its hour of darkest need and yet will not hesitate to cut it down to size if we feel that its not acting in the interests of the nation and Dharma, for it is in this party alone that we see the saviour of Bharat, the patriotism that reminds us of our freedom fighters, the nationalism in which our individual identities are subsumed to be one with the nation.

Has this news come in any of the other channels? Atleast on the website of NDTV and Times Now, the news of the BJP boycott of CNN-IBN has been completely blacked out. Of course, I would not have expected any thing to appear on CNN-IBN itself

Its almost as if the boycott of a prominent media operator by the principal opposition party of the country is a non-event!

Such is this country’s free media!

I am beginning to think what Ot says in comment # 28 might be true!

  60. Jiggs says:

NO not on any of the major networks or in the news papers, except IE:

    BJP to boycott CNN-IBN

    http://www.indianexpress.com/story/343069.html

They dont want one of their own to get flogged by the public, thats why no body is reporting.

  61. prashant says:

    Daily Pioneer has also reported.

  62. prashant says:

    <>

Our HONOURABLE Speaker is same to Jyoti Basu what AMAR SINGH is for Mulayam.

Heard that JYOTI BASU son is a “Dis Reputed Industrialist” and Somnath helps him to manage all Illegal things to Legal.

  63. Kill-IBN says:

Rajddep Bikahua Sardesai is Congress Party’s chamcha No 1.

Anil AMbani holds a major Stake in TV18 group, which inturn holds major stake in CNN-IBN.

Anil Ambani did what Amar Dalaal Bhaiya said, and made Raghav Bhel to for Congress party worker Sardesai to not telecast the tapes.

And everyone, What proof is there they have not edited out those video tapes ???????????????????

Lets boycott Sardesai and his wife Sagarika Ghose.

    Lets boycoot CNN-IBN.

Rajdeep Sardesai is an economizing journalists

We should also know that Rajdeep Sardesai has been given a PadamShree award by the current Congress government.

Yogendra Yadav has been appointed by Congress leader Arjun Singh as the Political head at NCERT, and also as member of Equal Opportunity Commission.

And every time the corrupt duo comes out with a poll, they predict a thumping victory for Congress.
First it was Gujarat, then Uttar Pradesh then Himachal Pradesh and then Punjab.

    They predicted Congress’s victory.

Almost all English-Media are financed by COngress party.

Lets boycott IBN and rest of them lateron.

  64. Raj says:

If Narendra Modi becomes PM of india with BJP gaining majority in the coming elections, will US still reject him visa on official visit ?

CNN-IBN must not hide truth from us: Show the tapes
    Pioneer Daily, 29 JUly 2008
    http://indiasecular.wordpress.com/2008/07/29/show-the-tapes/

Sting operations in India have a controversial record. But most controversies hitherto have arisen only in the aftermath of these being aired on television. At present, however, we face a queer situation wherein a major television news channel is refusing to telecast a sting operation it conducted in collusion with the protagonists.According to three BJP MPs, who were seen on television screens across the country waving wads of currency notes inside the Lok Sabha on July 22, CNN-IBN recorded a series of episodes in which they were offered a hefty bribe to abstain from voting in the confidence motion moved by the Prime Minister.

It is abundantly clear that the channel enthusiastically undertook the operation over two days with the help of hidden cameras and microphones. CNN-IBN has not denied that its correspondent secretly filmed the entire sequence of events in which an offer of Rs 3 crore was made to the potential defectors.

It is also confirmed that the three MPs, who had laid an elaborate trap to expose rampant horse-trading in the run-up to the trust vote, visited the premises of a top Samajwadi Party leader and also spoke on telephone to a senior Congress functionary.

All reports make it plain that the ‘advance’ was carried to one of the MPs by a person closely connected to the would-be purchasers. The monetary transaction has also been filmed. The money received on the forenoon of July 22 was subsequently carted to Parliament and displayed inside the House.

But, in a mysterious turn of events, CNN-IBN suddenly adopted a holier-than-thou posture on the eve of voting and refused to air the tape.

Several discrepancies in the subsequent statements by the channel have added to the suspicions surrounding its inexplicable decision to run down its own investigation.

It is now claimed that the audio quality is poor. Even if that were true, the quality of sound recording has never deterred sting operators from telecasting them so long as the pictures and conversations credibly convey the presence of the dramatis personae.

Further, despite committing to hand over the tapes to the Speaker immediately, CNN-IBN held them over for 24 hours for reasons best known to the channel.

The channel has periodically claimed it would telecast the tapes “very soon”, but more than a week after the event, an anxious nation’s curiosity remains to be quenched. Worse, the passage of time has enabled the horse-traders to try and turn the tables on the victims.

All manner of spurious claims have been made by those allegedly guilty of attempting to buy votes; so much so that it is being volubly asserted that the MPs concerned used their own money to stage a drama in the House in a bid to frame the ruling alliance.

This clearly amounts to vilification and character assassination of the three MPs who appear to have acted as whistle-blowers in the national interest.

In these circumstances, CNN-IBN has acted irresponsibly and unprofessionally by refusing to air the tapes, for it is only their telecast that can clear the air. The matter is of utmost public interest as it involves Parliament, the repository of the sovereign will of the people, and at least six MPs on both sides who are public servants, accountable to the people of India.

The channel cannot treat the tapes as private property, which it is free to either show or conceal, because these contain evidence that could be damning not just to the persons concerned but also the incumbent Government and the system as a whole.

It is not enough to hand over the tapes to the Speaker for examination by a seven-member inquiry committee set up by him. Since the whole country witnessed the display of bundles of cash inside Parliament, it follows that the people must also know about the background and origin of those wads.

CNN-IBN must, therefore, abandon its coquettish posture and forthwith telecast the unedited tapes in the national interest.http://www.dailypioneer.com/indexn12.asp?main_variable=EDITS&file_name=edit1%2Etxt&counter_img=1

  67. Muppi says:

I beleive BJP should boycott all the English TV channels and choose the Hindi channels also with due deligence. In any form they only get bad press and it is not in their interest to be on Air using these channels.

  68. Amar says:

I dont mind contributing Rs One Lakh for BJP to start its own Channel (plus yearly Rs one thousand) across the Globe but run by independent body controlled by BJP mindset (not exactly BJP as a party).

Indian media is in serious condition where people who get lots of corrupt money from Arabia, Western and Eastern world dominate this industry. There is no “TRUE” Indian views are published by the English Media in this country.

Personally, I have stopped watching all the mentioned and unmentioned English Channels. Stopped subscribing to Hindu, now I have signed up for one year Times subscription which I would cancel after the year-end. I would go for The Pioneer.

Wretched English media badly need a BJP sponsored Channels.

  69. Dheeraj says:

This seems to be a pro-BJP channel.
Hope readers don’t surrender their minds to this channel’s views without verifying.
Well, I am not convinced with the philosophy of this channel.. Certainly I am not justified to generalise things and also I’m new to this.. but so far …
I’ll post back if i change my mind as i get to know this site more..

Plz take this in the spirit of free speach..

  70. Dheeraj says:

And why the hell do they need moderation…

  71. Raghavendra says:

    Hi,

Like our friend Amar even I am ready to give 1 lakh to BJP if it starts its own channel.

    Raghavendra.

  72. Mritunjay says:

Thanks to the SECULAR POLICING of CNN-IBN channel that Indian democracy has landed in trouble. It allies with BJP to cover cash for vote scandal and briliantly back tracks on the whole story. Superb…You give even Communist politicians shivers on back tracking and double speak!!
And Mr. Sardesai, I doubt if you are a Hindu or not. Let alone being a Hindu, you should be humane enough

to see what’s going on in Kashmir. But no that’s not secularism! So you won’t see. Hats off to Indian version of secularism!

    KUDOS CNN-IBN!

  73. [...] Singh lead UPA Government win a tainted victory during the Confidence Motion as well as the BJP boycott CNN-IBN for not airing the tapes to the [...]

  74. Chickmagloor says:

I think CNN-IBN needs to remember that BJP will come to power one of these days and they will not forget. At the end of the day, these channels need Government benevolence to survive.. There would be nothing stopping BJP from kicking them in nuts or shutting them down using laws enshrined. I can bet that there are enough arcane laws existing in the Indian Penal Code to put CNN-IBN behind bars and Sardesai out of business.

Remember do unto others what you want others to do unto you.

  75. omerjan says:

what suits BJP is always correct, roiting, releasing of militants, attacking minorities, dividing country on religious grounds, one PRSIDENT was caught red handed taking bribe, what pakistan could not do to unite Huriyat leadership in Kashmir in 15 yrs. BJP did it in 15 hours by raking Amarnath shrine issue to garner more votes ,i think till Advani is not made PM which is evident because Congress has shown impotency to deal with the terror unleashed by parivar there will be no peace in India.

  76. tiger says:

so you bunch of super patriots think what bjp is doing is good for the nation and its democracy,eh.if the bjp is such a patriotic group then why are they hell bent on destroying the countries independent press.boycotting a particular press organisation doesnot bode well for the nation and its deomcratic credentials.a oppositions job is to protect freedoms of the nation not destroy it.a patriots job is protect its countries freedom ,including its press freedom.what “con”gress along with commies,is doing will prove destructive for the nation in long run but bjp is not any better.it is also using misguided and hot headed youths for its own use.cannot you people see ? but then again, most of you bloggers are actually egoistical self serving politicians in making who like to think themselves as patriots but are actually political parrotriots.so you are welcome to destroy yourselves but please dont take the country with it.
