The serial blasts at the surface are acts of War but they are also indicative of a deeper tussle taking place away from the glare of media scrutiny and public debate.
So how much do you really know about whats going on in your neighborhood Madrassa ?
Offstumped had earlier chronicled the ongoing tussle for the soul of Indian Islam as it manifested before the Jaipur Blasts and subsequently with the Anti-Terror Fatwa. Offstumped had also chronicled the happenstance between Muslim education charities and potential SIMI recruits in Karnataka which was followed by mobilization in parts of Karnataka on the question of Madrassas.
Offstumped is shining light on some more recent developments in the tussle for control of Madrassas.
The Times of India carried this piece by Mohammad Wajihuddin on 13th July titled “Dont mess with my madrassa“.
The piece goes into great detail on two opposing camps – one working to modernize Madrassas with government funding and the other working to keep Madrassas free of any Government dole.
Maulana Mazhar Alam Qasmi -the antagonist who heads the 35-year-old madrassa in Mumbai, a branch of the famous seminary Darul Uloom Deoband in Uttar Pradesh
Justice MSA Siddiqui – the protagonist who is also the Chairman of the National Commission for Minority Institutions (NCMI)
Maulana Madni cites examples from states like Bihar, West Bengal and MP where many madrassas joined the state madrassa boards. “Unqualified teachers who were more interested in drawing their salaries than teaching subjects like Islamic jurisprudence and Hadees (the Prophet’s traditions) have bred a generation of ill-informed maulvis. Now the Centre wants to finish off the madrassas completely,” says Maulana Madni who is leading a campaign against the modernisation of the madrassas.
The pro-modernisation movement, however, dismiss this “love the poor” stance of the madrassas as a lame excuse. “Who likes to remain poor?” asks Pune-based educationist P A Inamdar. . “When an imam takes his daughter to a Christian school, he is sending a strong message that the writing is on the wall. Change or perish,” says Inamdar.
But the real problem may lie with Jholawallahs as always
“Politicians, including HRD minister Arjun Singh, are being misguided by a section of middle-class Muslims who don’t understand the spirit behind the madrassas. Madrassas fulfil specific religious needs of the community, and should be handled carefully,”? says sociologist Imtiaz Ahmad
For how else will you explain this intransigence especially with reference to states like Bihar where the Madrassa board is set to be next only to ICSE in terms of performance.
The TOI also had this on the Imam who sent his kids to a convent way back in Jan of 2008.
?So what does this tussle over Madrassas have to do with the current spate of terror ?
The 14 page e-mail letter sent to media agencies minutes before the Ahmedabad blasts names Mukesh Ambani, Vilasrao Deshmukh and RR Patil amongst others as future targets.
Note, Mukesh Ambani was singled out ostensibly for his mansion coming up on disputed Wakf Board land.
So the pack that perpetrated this week’s low intensity blasts is not just concerned with macro Islamist issues in India but seem to have a micro knowledge of local Muslim politics of Mumbai. There in may lie a tactical blunder on the part of this pack for they may have given away much more than they should have of their identity and whereabouts.
Vilasrao Deshmukh has been at the forefront of Madrassa Modernization having called for setting up of a State Madrassa Board as recently as July 1st.
He has also ordered to act in the direction of setting up a Madrasa Board for which the Centre has allocated an annual fund of Rs 10lakh.
Remember the oldest Madrassa in Mumbai is stiffly resisting this move.

Incidents from July 12th rioting may explain this further.
the principal of Madrasa Ishaatul Uloom, Gowandi Maulana Imtiyaz Bhoira explained to RR Patel the ill behavior of mischievous persons he was treated during traveling in commuter train. “I applied to get passport for my son and Tardev police was to verify the concerned inquiry, I told police that my son is studying in a Madrasa of Gujarat, police personnel ordered me to remove his name from that Madrasa because terror activities are being imparted there,” he said.

I regret the fact that we Hindus easily get carried away by what the Indian Psec media wants us to believe. Take if from me: I turned into full-fledged Hindutva only as recently as December 2007. By the way I am 32 years old. However the metamorphosis from a Secular to my present state had taken a full 5 years ever since I visted Qutub-Minar and Mathura in 2 consecutive days. I felt cheated and inspired to get to the bottom of secularism. You should witness the Qutub-minar with all the Hindu deities in there and no two pillars being the same. The famed Humayun tomb was actually placed in Hindu Temple and cast in the 3rd century AD. Mathura was a life changing experience. A big mosque at the exact place where we Hindus believe Lord Krishna was supposed to have been born.
November 2007 Gujarat elections and Modi bashing was all it took for me. Honestly I didn’t know anything about Mr. Modi until then but we are all good judge of men/women. Two things were sufficient for me to repose faith in him.
1. When BJP members wanted him to give amnesty to 2 lakh farmer booked for power theft Modi just simply refused to do that. Had it been Karunanidhi or any other congressi they would have thougth of an average 3 votes for every farmer. But Modi didn’t even though everyone painted a gloomy picture ahead of elections
2. His brother’s daughter is unemployed after a B.Ed degree. I can only think of Karunanidhi and his extended family with 3 wives and numerous children.
Now Mr.Modi’s coverage of MSM in India is sufficient proof to question everything the secs talk about. Take for instance the non-existing 3 days during Godhra. 27 Feb’ 2002 Godhra train carnage. 28 riots. 1 March the army was called. Now tell me where are 3 days that Modi supposedly gave to riotiers.
COmpare and contrast 2002 with 1984 riots. 360 rioting Hindus were shot dead by police. Not one Congressi has been touched so far.

This is the same Mumbai Police which was ranked next to Scot. Yard in its crime investigation.

Re. Madarssas, Yoss….They must be KEPT UNDER CONTROL. My understanding was that they refused to let any kind of inspections or regulation to assimilate them to the Indian education system.

The question raised here is:

New Delhi: The war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress over the serial bomb blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad has intensified.
Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj has raised an accusing finger at the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government for the blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.
“The blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad reek of a conspiracy to divert attention from the cash for vote allegations and also to bring back the Muslim vote which the Government has lost due to the nuclear deal,” Sushma alleged.
Sushma also hinting at a conspiracy to the fact that two BJP ruled states came under attack in 24 hours.
“The attacks in two BJP-ruled states in a span of two days and within four days of the UPA Government winning the confidence vote has some meaning and what I am saying is proved by enough circumstantial evidence,” she said.
The Congress reacted strongly to Sushma’s charge.
Congress Spokesperson Manish Tiwari said the party would be responding legally to BJP’s charge.
“How can she make such an irresponsible statement? We will take legal recourse,” Tiwari said.
Congress media cell chief M Veerappa Moily, too, reacted angrily to BJP’s accusations.
“Sushma Swaraj’s words are outrageous and full of venom against the Congress. The BJP has forgotten the tenets of dharma after losing the trust vote. They are linking the terror attacks with the loss in the trust vote. This matter is above politics and above religion. We will take d matter to the court if required,” Moily said.
Meanwhile, the UPA is reported to be considering postponing the Monsoon Session of Parliament from August to November.
The ruling alliance is believed to be worried about being hit by criticism from the Opposition over the terror strikes in Bangalore and Ahmedabad and the cash for votes allegations.
The National Democratic Alliance met on Monday and is reportedly planning about bringing a No Confidence Motion against the Central Government. It is upset with reports about a possible postponement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
I’m amazed at these allegations only because of who they are coming from, Ms Swaraj is a serious politician, and she just wouldnt willy nilly say things like this. Either way, the government needs to be attacked hard by the BJP on this. Any government that cannot ensure the safety of its citizens cannot be allowed to stay in power.

See the only way BJP can effectively take on the opposition is the convince the average voter that it is to the solution to the crisis. I have seen many people who agree completely with the problems surrounding india and the terror situation. But the question they all ask is “How can assert that BJP is the answer to the problem?, even during NDA rule there were attacks, especially 3-4 blasts in mumbai though small scale”, BJP has made a start by calling for a federal agency and speaking of POTA. A better and effective answer will be given if M.O.D manages to nab the guilty and hangs them in public in 2-3 weeks time.

There is one big difference between BJP and kangress. BJP atleast has the right ideas about fighting terrorism, eventhough their execution has been muddled sometimes, exception ofcourse the M.O.D.
If asked by voters, BJP can argue, atleast we had the right law, POTA, or even TADA, Kangress repealed it just for minority appeasment.
So, BJP has the right ideas, the right law, and does not consider votebank politics more important then national security.
M.O.D. has already showed action, they already caught one SIMI activist in amdavad, have him in remand for 14 days, they’ll be tearing him a new one as we speak.

Yes i saw that, hope they get some leads. I was also hoping some BJP leader would come out and say, that all indian borders including nepal-india boder should be sealed. (by sealing i dont mean just a barbed fence, we need the same wall israel constructed all around palestine, that itself will solve 75% of the problems). One electric fence, a patrol road behind it and then a wall. After that they can slowly start busting out the sleeper cells inside the country. Terror investigation is not a post-blast process, it is a daily job. It has to be done every sec. But I was thinking that these guys are just targeting BJP states, but yesterday they caught some guys in Chennai too. Overall, if there is anything to cheer, it is the fact that “congress is over for ever, the middle class which was wavering on the nuke deal over why bjp is not taking a stand and all that dilemna is over, these blasts will send all those undecided voters packing to the BJP”. Mumbai, July 27: Maharashtra’s anti-terrorist squad today traced the email allegedly sent by the Indian Mujahideen, a little-known terror group that claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad serial blasts yesterday, to an American family living in a Navi Mumbai highrise.
The 14-page email was sent from the address alarbi_Gujarat@yahoo.com. The Internet protocol address was traced to Kenneth Heywood of Gunina Housing Society, Sector 2, Sanpada. Heywood is a resident of flats 1503/1504, C Wing.
A TV channel had claimed yesterday that it received the threat mail five minutes before the first of the 16 blasts in Ahmedabad. STAR News said it had received a mail at 9pm. It is not clear if the two mails are identical or, if not, which one had police traced to Navi Mumbai.
Built last year, Gunina is a multi-storeyed housing complex on Palm Beach Road, an upscale neighbourhood in Navi Mumbai.
ATS teams that reached the top floor of C Wing just after midnight found the two flats in the name of Delhi-based couple Abhishek and Mamta Sharma had been rented out to an American family. The family claimed innocence and said their account had been hacked, sources said.
ATS chief Hemant Karkare refused to give details of the investigations. “We have conducted multiple searches. The investigations are still on,” he said.
Karkare said his squad had asked Mumbai police to step up security at malls and places of worship. Security has been tightened at the Bombay Stock Exchange because of a warning in the email. It threatened more attacks in Mumbai and specifically mentioned the stock exchange, which was targeted during the March 1993 serial explosions and has been on the terror hit list ever since.
Mumbai police commissioner Hassan Gafoor suggested the email might be fake when he said: “Some inconsistencies and discrepancies have cropped up in the email probe. It is too early to comment. We have sent it for forensic analysis. There was a generalised threat perception to the BSE, and we have stepped up security as a precautionary measure.”
The email also threatened industrialist Mukesh Ambani, chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and home minister R.R. Patil.
“Don’t think we are unaware of the SRPF attacks on our masjids and our homes, the insult of our Quran, and your enmity (sic) with the Muslims in Digras and nearby areas in Yavatmal, and of the burning alive of three Muslims in Jalna with the backing of the police….We wonder at your memory. Have you forgotten the evening of July 11 2006 so quickly and so easily?” it asked the politicians.
The Reliance Industries chairman was singled out because he is building his new 27-storey home on a plot that was originally wakf land. “We also alert Mukesh Ambani to think twice before usurping and building a citadel on a land in Mumbai that belongs to the Wakf Board, lest it turns into horrifying memories for you which you will never ever forget,” the email warned.
The email also referred to the 1992-93 communal riots. “You try to fool us in the name of fast-track courts made for ’93 riot case, through which you wish to free the actual Hindu culprits like Madhukar Sarpotdar, who was caught redhanded with illegal firearms, while innocent Muslims arrested in the bomb blasts case are being tried in the courts for years and years,” it said.

I simply don’t understand the absurd logic put forward by Mr. Gafoor…on what grounds does he say that email was fake…I guess he doesn’t understand the nature of the Internet…the email did contain the information aboutr blasts…& tracing the IP address to Gunina Housing Society…yeah the sender might have used ip-spoofing (using fake IP address€) but can’t the police contact Yahoo to get the information about where & when the account was created, not when the email was sent…also, same way get the IP addresses of all the emails pertaining to this Indian mujahideen & then trace them and see if there’s any common thread (apart from the contents) running thru them.
I don’t want to sound condescending, but sooner the Indian law enforcement agencies acquaint themselves & get grip on cyber-crime…esp this kind the sooner its gonna give them results.
