Cash strapped – Not me says Rajdeep Sardesai

The formal charges may have not been filed in the cash for votes for scandal but it didnt take too long for the rationalization to hit the newsprint. The CNN-IBN’s Rajdeep Sardesai may have feigned ignorance but this piece by him in the Hindustan Times confirms his guilt by indecision.

Titled “Cash Strapped” the piece is about everything to do with the “cash for votes scandal” and nothing. How is that possible one may ask ?

Well nothing is impossible with the intellectual gimmickry the likes of Sardesai are capable of.

Sardesai begins with this question

is parliamentary democracy being strengthened by what we have observed this week?

while conveniently side-stepping the role played by him and his channel in the events of the week.

Be that as it may, a simple litmus test for the credibility and intellectual worth of a piece like this, especially one that purports to take a hard look at the events of the week, would be to ask

Does the piece analyze the consequences of the events of the week to determine if Parliamentary Democracy was strengthened or weakened ?

OR

Does the piece pass value judgement on the events themselves on the basis of crude generalizations and oversimplifications to conclude that Parliamentary Democracy was strengthened or weakened ?

So let us apply this simple test to this piece by Rajdeep Sardesai.

Sardesai essentially raises 4 issues

- Convicted MPs voting in Parliament

- Abstentions and Defections

- Leverage by smaller parties

- Conduct of large parties

Sardesai’s comments on the first issue are symptomatic of the template he applies throughout this piece where he goes on to pass value judgement on the actions or events on the basis of generalizations and oversimplifications.

If Sardesai really wanted this to be about Democracy being strengthened or weakened he would not have merely covered familiar ground on convicted criminal MPs and instead he would have focused on the moral legitimacy of the trust earned by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the strength of convicted criminal MPs to make the case that Parliamentary Democracy stands weakened because the party in power is prepared to make shady deals with those in Jail.

On the second issue Sardesai goes on to give the impression that he is questioning the moral legitmacy of the trust earned on the basis of abstentions and defections while sidestepping the real issue. He and his channel are especially guilty of concluding that the trust vote was a mandate for the Nuclear Deal from Parliament and a convincing and powerful one at that.

How can Sardesai expect us to take his moral generalizations on abstentions and defections at face value when he glosses over the fact that Parliamentary Democracy stands undermined by the fact that a Minority Government negotiated an International Agreement when it clearly lacked the mandate to do so.

Once again you see the template being repeated of passing value judgement on actions while glossing over the consequences.

The third?and fourth issue are classic Sardesai generalizations and oversimplifications. He introduces a new phrase called the “JMMisation” of politics but fails to point out the crucuil difference between the Congress’ many deals with the likes of JMM from NDA’s alliances with smaller parties?none of which were premised on survival at any cost. Vajpayee lead NDA’s loss of trust twice despite being the party in power are testimony to this fact.

Sardesai’s closes his piece with typical Progressive Liberal rhetoric – claim victimhood and transfer the blame while obfuscating the real issue.

What is actually needed is a bold new initiative to clean up the entire relationship between cash and politicians. Sunlight, it is said, is the best disinfectant and it is perhaps time that political parties openly acknowledge that our political system is linked to hard cash. Cash is needed to fight elections. Cash is needed to keep cadres loyal. So, how is this cash to be legitimised and the taint of ?dirty money? removed?

So “dirty money” is to blame and all politicians are victims and they need social justice. Forget that what we had just now was not an election but a Confidence Motion.

So instead of posing tough questions of the real issue at hand which is upholding the rule of law, in this case the anti-defection law, Sardesai diverts attention to the unrelated issue of political funding.

Speaking of funding it begs the question of politico-business interests funding media channels such as Sardesai’s CNN-IBN. With reports of Anil Ambani having purchased a minority stake in the holding company of TV18, will Mr. Sardesai care to explain his channel’s conduct in the last 48 hours ?

Sardesai closes his piece with what has become the Communal Socialist scoundrel’s?last refuge to deflect attention from any kind of public scrutiny of their conduct – to appropriate moral high ground by invoking the Gujarat Riots. Omar Abdullah’s speech may have earned him brownie points for his passion but it leaves behind a question mark on his capitulation to Islamist Majoritarianism in Kashmir.

Offstumped Bottomline: Rajdeep Sardesai’s crocodile tears on cash strapped politicians do little to wash away the taint of his own cash laden Channel’s conduct over the past 48 hours. Displaying classic symptoms of psuedo-intellectual Progressive Liberalism, Sardesai deflects and obfuscates to take the moral high ground with anything he can lay his hands on from Gujarat riots to Campaign Finance Reform. The bitter truth however for Sardesai is that his channel aided and abetted a fraud on Parliamentary Democracy and his silence on the same answers the rhetorical question he asks of others.

That was good analysis of guilt stricken serdesai. But while we are burning our blood on unethical behavior of CNN IBN, BJP leaders are shamelessly giving prime time interviews to CNN IBN. Its like BJP rather than taking on this mischievous and unethical news channels to task is silently and shamelessly appeasing it.

I guess it would be better for Rajdeep & his cohorts to remember that old adage:

Yoss Boss, as you rightly pointed out that Desai obfuscates the whole issue, thats the classic trademark of these holier-than-thou frothing-at-mouth neo-liberals…(I beg to differ about calling them ‘Progressives’…they are dyed-in-the-wool authoritarians, who when given the opportunity won’t hesitate to run rough-shod and even decimate their opponents or even emulate their foreign masters & ideals like Stalin & Mao…need we go far to see an example…the state of West Bengal under the constant rule of these commies since ‘77)

    Apologies if posted already….

However much one may hate the left, you have to give it them never tolose their cool and resort to unparliamentary language at any time, This time too, they have kept their calm despite grave verbal provocations from their ruthless detractors.

PM should have been slave of CMP: CPM

New Delhi, July 24: Mud-slinging between the Congress and Left intensified on Thursday with the CPM saying that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should have been a “bonded slave” of the UPA’s Common Minimum Programme and since he has decided to go ahead with the nuclear deal which is not mentioned in that document it appears that he has chosen his “master”.

Replying to Singh’s allegation that the Left parties wanted to treat him as a bonded slave, Politburo member Sitaram Yechury in an editorial in the forthcoming issue of party mouthpiece People’s Democracy said “If this is the state of affairs with the promises made in the CMP, what explains the desperate eagerness to rush the India-US nuclear deal, particularly when this deal does not even figure in the CMP? There can be only one explanation. Since he has chosen to describe himself as a ‘bonded slave’, he appears to have chosen his master as well!”

Bondage to goras apparently carries little stigma. One can sing paens to the spiritual and other benefits of such bondage in the halls of Oxford and demonstrate further benefits by ‘bonding’ to the INC High command. Commendable onlee.

He can try and gain moral high ground with holier than thou look in his write ups or on TV.

Since it is proved that SOM dada under pressure from his new PARTY, will not allow the tapes to be made public, I want to discuss the Repercussions:

    1. The Congress gains the most out of this as they now have a damocles sword hanging over Amar Singh and SP’s head, SP will now have to toe the line adopted ( rather ordered by the Congress)

    2. BJP has got an egg on its face, by not using their commonsense and browbeating IBN to gove them a copy of the tape, at the same time all other parties will now think twice to rile up the BJP. Reason, fear of BJP starting a public agitation.

    3. The worst loser is Rajdeep, his position is DHOBI KA KUTTA NA GHAR KA NA GHAT KA, He has lost some ground with his BOSSWOMAN and now he has to face the music when BJP comes back to power.

  14. arjun says:

    From Swapan Dasgupta’s article.

It is too early to say if this “cash for votes” scandal contributes to further cynicism or translates into a quiet disgust with the UPA. All that can be said with certainty is that the impression that some 22 MPs changed sides on non-political considerations may come to haunt the prime minister.

Also UPA friendly corporates were responsible for not airing the sting.

BJP has to create slogans on this issue. Simple examples; Singh is King Ya Cash is King. Suitcase sarkaar. Or link it to inflation. Like mahangai singh ke mahenge MP. Also add Amar singh and Ahmad Patel’s names.

Something along these lines that will stick and gain momentum.

Criticising the BJP members’ “irresponsible” action of waving wads of currency notes in the Lok Shabha, Bhartiya Jan Shakti Party Chief Uma Bharti on Wednesday announced that her party will hold a day-long fast to “repent” the “shameful deed” of the opposition party.

“Waving wads of currency notes inside the house is a very shocking and sad act. They have made a mockery of the highest temple of democracy in the country,” Bharti said at a press conference here.

The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister said that all 14 units of her party will observe a day-long fast before the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Deen Dayal Upadhayay “to repent the BJP’s attempt to defame Parliamentary democracy.”

“If the party wanted to disclose the horse-trading of MPs by the ruling coalition before Parliament, they should have simply submitted the money to the Speaker,” Bharti, a former BJP leader, said.

Flaying the BJP for resorting to “the worst way to expose the scam,” she said that the opposition party should apologise publicly for the shameful act.

“Members are even not allowed to wave a newspaper inside the house as it is against the the decorum of Parliament. If one wants to prove something through documents, one is supposed to table it before the Speaker,” she said, adding that the three BJP MPs have “blatantly defied all the rules”. She also deamanded strict action against the three MPs.

“In past also, BJP MPs have been involved in immigration scam and cash for query scam. The party should apologise and accept that its MPs are saleble,” Bharti alleged. PTI KNO SPC ALM 07240034 DEL NNNN

The crowd made way for him.

Lying in front of the car was a donkey.

    “Sure”, says Padmasri.

“How about for ten rupees then?” says the politician.

“What kind of journalist do you think I am?” retorts Padmasri angrily.

“We are already established that”, said the politician, “we are now discussing the price.”

You need to understand that, had congress given us good governance, atleast in the basic secutity of citizens issue, people would not have rooted for BJP whenever islamic terrorists resort to blasts.

  57. Jiggs says:

    Puneet/Ravindra….

BSY must act, no mercy must be shown to any sympathizers even.

    This must be avenged….

  58. RoW says:

    Jiggs,

You can’t leave this matter to BSY alone ! Go ahead and catch those bloody terrorits… BJP’s reputation (of firmly dealing with terrorism) is at stake here !!!

  59. Kedar says:

An acid test for BSY. If he fails, he will surely lose respect in my eyes. I am right now in sitting in my office in Bangalore and Madivala and Forum (some of the blast-sites!) are close to my office.

  60. Jiggs says:

    Kedar…

The Congress can NEVER , NEVER provide us with basic security…

This GRAND OLD PARTY STUFF is a load of crap….The Old Congress which had Patel, Bose etc. in it died immediately after independence. Once Nehru got started with his machinations of destroying the basic ethos of our country.

man..they care a fig leaf for you and me to live…the only thing they want from us is money by means of ever increasing taxes, so that they can ammasse as much and if that takes to partition the country further, they wont even bat an eye lid…

Congress is the biggest threat to the Union of India, period…

  61. prashant says:

    ROW

LET ME REMIND U TWO INCIDENT OF PAST

WHEN KANDAHAR HAPPENED YOU ALL WERE BUSY IN PROTESTING IN FRONT OF THE GATE OF PM WITH LIVE TELECAST FROM MEDIA

WHEN KARGIL HAPPENED YOU WERE BUSY IN TELLING THE WORLD THAT IT WAS ELECTION GIMMICKS FROM BJP.

BESIDE THIS WHEN POKHRAN HAPPENED YOU ALL WERE DENOUNCING INDIAN GOVERNMENT.

ALL ABOVE WITH FULL SUPPORT OF YOUR MEDIA.

    SO STOP PREACHING US.

  62. Jiggs says:

    hey RoW…

have you ever been thru. a situation like this…I have seen it and experienced it….

had you seen what happened in Mumbai Train blasts ….you would have to be locked up in padded cell for your life….

    Just shut up….

  63. Jiggs says:

    Kedar…

Buddy…just keep us in the loop in the coming days.

By gods grace the toll is less, however, do keep us posted if you feel any assistance of any kind is required.

It usually comes up you know.

  64. prashant says:

HOW CAN YOU EXPECT OUR NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR, OUR IB PEOPLE CAN WORK ON SECURITY WHEN THEY ARE GIVEN MORE IMPORTANT ASSIGMENT TO SAVE CORRUPT UPA GOVT.

ROW HAVE YOU NOT READ THAT PAST FEW DAYS OUR NSA,IB WERE MORE BUSY IN “CASH GATE SCAM”

  65. Martian says:

If I were the PM, I would ransack the entire Shivaji Nagar area without any questions aka Israel. My Blood is boiling.

  66. Jiggs says:

    Martian…

    So is mine….

Thats an apt suggestion….why these faggots wont even dare entering Modi territory….

Man we need strong responses…enough of this Gandhiwad crap….

  67. Martian says:

The current trend of low-intensity un-professional jihad clearly shows the involvement of Indian Skull caps without the professional support from Pakis.

  68. RoW says:

    Martian,

It is the CM’s duty to ransack the entire Shivaji Nagar area (if you please) to catch the terrorists !

I am surpised to see you suggesting that the PM should ransack Shivaji Nagar while the Karnaktaka CM watches him on TV from his drawing room

  69. Jiggs says:

Purge their ranks within India first, purge em all….man…let loose the army with orders to identify and shoot the bas….s at sight….

  70. Kedar says:

    jiggs,

    agree totally!

I will say that any strategy (legal of course) employed by BJP– even using the islamic bomb blasts to political effect– to bring down this evil empire of Congress is fine with me.

As our Yoss Boss has explained in his concept of dharma, anything done to upload dharma is dharma itself. All I care for is the security of me and my fellow fellow countrymen.

  71. Kedar says:

    anything done to uphold* dharma

    Too much of internet!

  72. Jiggs says:

    Kedar..

Our dharma is let loose the security forces on these guys….By this I dont mean only the ones who have carried this out…but even the ones who even say that TERRORISM HAS NO RELIGION….

Merely, uttering the T word must be crime in our country, just go after them…EYE FOR AN EYE….

The Israelis have survived in such belligerent neighborhood of theirs only by this policy.

We need it and deperately we need it.

The fact that this government, made POTA a poll plank, shows how serious they are in protecting our lives. Without any anti terror laws, what do you expect??

  73. Kedar says:

Israelis have found themselves always at war and so, their preparedness is at an entirely different level.

We are technically not at war, atleast openly. So unless someone wise and farsighted is at the helm of affairs, we cant expect these incompetent fools to take drastic steps and set things right, when things havent completely gone out of control.

Even now, some would feel “ohh.. just gelatin sticks.. and just 1 woman died. is that it?”

The Bangalore blasts are yet another example of “the salami tactics” practised on Indians.

  80. arjun says:

waiting for 48 hours to give a chance to the speaker’s office to release it.

  81. Milind says:

According to local Marathi Press, the “sting” was reportedly monitored by the great Gopinath Munde of Maharashtra BJP.

Now Munde in my opinion is not such a great leader. His performance as a deputy CM in 1995-2000 was completely lack luster. I doubt whether he knows that copies can be made of any video recording.

He made a big drama a few months ago by resigning from party posts. After getting whatever he wanted from BJP Delhi, which means full power to run the show in Maharashtra, he managed to:

    - Loose the MLC elections (Teachers and Graduates Constituency) for HIS nominy in Aurangabad last week. Sharad Pawar’s NCP guy won.

    - He had gone and cried to Bal Thakarey when he resigned from BJP. The same Shiv Sena – BJP’s ally gave him a finger by putting up their candidate in the Aurangabad MLC elections.

    - His trusted man – Haribhau Rathod gave him another big finger by switching sides at the crucial trust vote. Apparently, he was having tea with Shree Munde around 1700 hrs at the Sansad Bhavan Canteen on the day of the vote. It seems, he told Munde that he is going inside the house to vote and managed to give a slip to Munde and the BJP.

What can you expect from such leaders?

Our BJP guys are also crooks so I don’t think they believed CNN-IBN to play fair by the rules. They simply had no clue as to what could be a better way, for example, running a copy of the recording before handing over the tape to CNN-IBN.

They behaved like Konkona Sen in the movie “Page 3″. Idiots.

Hope they learn some lessons and handle the fall out well.

  82. arjun says:

Milind, If youthink about it, they probably no option but to go with CNN-IBn since there was a reporter who was willing to do a sting.

Most likely Ahmad Patel related scenes would have been removed since it suits the Congress to pile on pressure on SP.

  83. arjun says:

Guys, this is shocking. Rajnath scuttled BJP attempts during the trust vote.
BJP has to fire this guy if they want to have any chance to doing well in the next election.
This is internal sabotage. No wonder media was talking about a split in the BJP.

BJP hits a trough after the Karnataka crest

    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/PoliticsNation/BJP_hits_a_trough_after_the_Karnataka_crest/articleshow/3281846.cms

Party observers attribute the current situation not so much to infighting, that ailment which continues to bog the leadership, as to internal sabotage. Ever since Mr L K Advani was named the NDA’s prime ministerial candidate, BJP president Rajnath Singh, wary of being pushed to the margins, has been striving hard to make his presence felt. There are thus two centres of power within the party, each pulling in opposition directions.

There is now also a nagging suspicion that proceedings at the core group meetings held from time to time were being leaked to government managers, allowing them to pre-empt moves initiated by the BJP.

That the party leaders were working at cross-purposes was evident from the manner in which they failed to snatch the JMM away from the UPA camp. It now transpires that there was a deliberate delay in getting back to Mr Shibu Soren after initiating talks with him. Precious time was lost in conveying NDA’s readiness to accept Guruji’s terms, allowing the UPA strategists enough time and leeway to lure their estranged colleague back.

Those in the know of things blame the BJP president for botching efforts to wean the JMM away. Known for his proximity to former Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda, Mr Singh resisted efforts to bring back Mr Babulal Marandi to the party fold. It’s the same factor that is believed to have been at work in torpedoing a deal with the JMM.

BJP cancels screening of sting footage

Party cancels screening of sting footage

Pioneer News Service | New Delhi

Following speculation that action could be initiated against the three BJP ‘whistle-blower’ MPs, the party on Friday suddenly turned cautious and cancelled the proposed screening of the ‘cash-for-vote’ sting operation footage in its party office.

Party leaders said they decided it would be better to go public with evidence after the Speaker’s office responds to the complaint filed by the three MPs.

Arrangements for the screening at the BJP headquarters were dismantled just before the Press conference addressed by party leader VK Malhotra at the behest of the ‘top leadership’.

BJP also held back the copy of the letter of complaint submitted by the three MPs to the Speaker on Friday saying they were waiting for the ‘Speaker’s office to respond’.

  85. prashant says:

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SUICIDE BY NDA IF JMM HAS JOINED THE NDA.

    x-posting:

The only unwittingly chankian outcome of approaching the legendarily neutral CNN-IBN for this sting ops is to later rain down on this network (and certain others) should NDA regain power in ‘09. The point was not just to discredit UPA but to discredit its chief cheerleader in the TV news business.

Well, now they have understandable just cause, I guess.

All that the NDA needs to defang poisonous foreign funded ‘newscasters’ is to code into law the requirement that the ownership and shareholding of all news media in india be subject to full disclosure (going back 2 generations into their parent firms’ ownerships too) and that fully 2/3rds or 3/4ths of such ownership should always reside with the general Indian public or something like that. Every phoren funded newscaster needs to get the freakin’ message. How many Indian channels beam US news into the US? Why do we need US based firms funding Indian news channels here?

    JMTs etc.
    /Have a nice day, all.

Amit Verma: Can you get that article from somewhere? It can be used to in a chain email to expose Rajdeep amongst guys who still consider him some kinda great journalist.

BJP not enthusiastic about inquiry committee

    http://www.hindu.com/2008/07/27/stories/2008072756170800.htm

Mr. Malhotra confirmed to The Hindu that he had been contacted by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. He said that it would not have mattered if the setting up of the committee had been delayed by a few days, but the formality of asking political parties to nominate their representative on the committee should have been met. Mr. Malhotra hinted that the BJP would consider “whether we want to serve at all on this committee”.

On Friday evening, there were reports that the CNN IBN had in fact decided to telecast the “tapes” allegedly showing the act of cash-giving to Ashok Arkal, but by Saturday morning it was stated on behalf of the channel that it stood by the statement already made by its head Rajdeep Sardesai that the tapes were with the Speaker and “there was no question of telecasting the footage” since it had also become the subject of a parliamentary inquiry.

  90. arjun says:

Most likely tapes have been blurred before giving it to the Speaker. No wonder Amar singh is very confident now.

Pictures, audio unclear on ‘bribe’ sting CD; probe panel to submit report by August 11

    http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/FullcoverageStoryPage.aspx?sectionName=&id=c0a16c99-61bd-440c-9a9d-e3ff1b1450faSinghisKing_Special&&Headline=Pictures+unclear+on+%e2%80%98bribe‘%20′+sting+CD

The secret videotapes believed to contain images related to the bribes-for-votes scandal have turned up grainy footage of poor picture and audio quality, sources said.

The tapes, part of a sting operation by the CNN-IBN channel, are at the heart of allegations that three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs were bribed Rs 1 crore to abstain from voting in Lok Sabha on July 22.

The tapes and cash are currently in the custody of Lok Sabha Secretary General PDT Achary and will be seen by the seven-member panel that Speaker Somnath Chatterjee set up on Saturday to look into the complaints of the BJP MPs, sources told Hindustan Times.

The Speaker has already received formal complaints from the three BJP MPs who have named SP’s Allahabad MP Reoti Raman Singh, party general secretary Amar Singh and the Congress president’s political secretary Ahmed Patel as the people who allegedly offered them the bribe.

Sources in CNN-IBN said Singh and Patel do not figure in the tapes. But the Deo panel is likely to study both the physical and circumstantial evidence before reaching a conclusion.

The panel, which been asked to give its report by August 11 when Parliament opens for its monsoon session, is headed by V Kishore Chandra S Deo (Congress). It includes V K Malhotra (BJP), Mohammad Salim (CPM), Ram Gopal Yadav (SP), Devendra Yadav (RJD), Rajesh Verma (BSP) and C Kuppusami (DMK).

Members of the panel were restricted to the Lok Sabha, where the scandal unfolded. Deo, who also heads the Privileges Committee of the Lok Sabha, had earlier headed an inquiry into the MP Local Area Development Fund (MPLAD) scandal in which members were caught on camera negotiating payments for recommending projects.

For its part, the BJP was quick to question the Speaker’s decision to constitute the panel without consulting them. Leader of Opposition L K Advani has convened a meeting of NDA partners to finalise a combined response to the panel.

Given the poor quality of the tapes, the news channel could also be asked by the panel whether the tapes were original or copies.

  91. arjun says:

So nothing is going to come out of this. Both audio and video fuzzy means that most likely the video has been doctored.

  92. [...] BJP has announced a boycott of CNN-IBN for its refusal to air the tapes pertaining to the Cash for Votes [...]
