Manmohan Confidence Vote – A Pyrrhic Victory

What a roller coaster that was ?

After all the tack of dealmaking, abstentions and surprises finally some real action on the floor of the house with 3 BJP MPs baring the fixer and broker in chief’s morality for the whole world to witness.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wanted this motion of confidence to be a judgement on his 4 year record. Let us pay close attention to how this confidence or lack of was expressed.

First let us play close attention to Manmohan Singh’s vituperative attack to L.K. Advani

The Leader of Opposition, Shri L.K. Advani has chosen to use all manner of abusive objectives to describe my performance. He has described me as the weakest Prime Minister, a nikamma PM, and of having devalued the office of PM. To fulfill his ambitions, he has made at least three attempts to topple our government. But on each occasion his astrologers have misled him. This pattern, I am sure, will be repeated today. At his ripe old age, I do not expect Shri Advani to change his thinking. But for his sake and India?s sake, I urge him at least to change his astrologers so that he gets more accurate predictions of things to come.

As for Shri Advani?s various charges, I do not wish to waste the time of the House in rebutting them. All I can say is that before leveling charges of incompetence on others, Shri Advani should do some introspection. Can our nation forgive a Home Minister who slept when the terrorists were knocking at the doors of our Parliament? Can our nation forgive a person who single handedly provided the inspiration for the destruction of the Babri Masjid with all the terrible consequences that followed? To atone for his sins, he suddenly decided to visit Pakistan and there he discovered new virtues in Mr. Jinnah. Alas, his own party and his mentors in the RSS disowned him on this issue. Can our nation approve the conduct of a Home Minister who was sleeping while Gujarat was burning leading to the loss of thousands of innocent lives? Our friends in the Left Front should ponder over the company they are forced to keep because of miscalculations by their General Secretary.

All fury no fire Dr. Singh, you did not have the courage to even say all of this on the floor of the house.? All of this invective apart the facts of your record Dysfunctional Governance dont change, the reality of your Electile Dysfunctional Leadership?dont change.

Your vote of confidence was bought by going to bed with fixers and brokers who are incapable of speaking the language of decency, bred as they were in the gutter.

The final tally says it all with 275 for the motion 256 against the motion with 10 abstentions.

You were right to pursue the strategic intent of getting India out of the nuclear winter it has been in. But sir you did not convince any political formation to express confidence on the merits of your record. You did not convince?a significant number of individual members cutting across party lines to express confidence on the voice of their conscience.? Rooted in questionable abstentions this is a pyrrhic victory and it is beginning of the end of your Ultimate Perverse Alliance that saw you accidentally occupy this august office.

Any idea who were those 10 people who abstained? Were all those from NDA? Did Vajpayee vote at all?

This has to go down as the crassest speech ever written … maybe by one of those “maut ke saudagar” speech writers…. disgusting these congis always are….

  7. yossarin says:

I have no idea who the abstentions were but at least 3 to 4 crossed over in addition to the abstentions. It would be interesting to see who the crossovers were as well. On the rest of the wishes ;) till I apply the moderation broom.

  8. Chanakya says:

    hey folks,

why boil?? the real tamasha begins now :-)

  9. socal says:

Too hurt for what?! The govt. was bound to sail through since the principle opposition party was dithering in its position over this issue.

Its good that the govt. survived the vote. Their loss today would unnecessarily generate sympathy for the govt.

  10. prashant says:

AS A CITIZEN OF INDIA WE NOW DEMAND FROM THE SPEAKER TO SHOW THE CD
HE WAS SO HURT WHEN CASH FOR QUESTION HAPPENED.
OR IS HE LIKE OUR PM WHO ONLY LOOSE SLEEP IF ANY MUSLIM IS DETAINED FOR TERRORIST ACT.

WE DEMAND FROM SPEAKER TO SHOW THAT CD TO ALL INDIANS IMMEDIATELY

  11. sud says:

I’m now more interested in implications….

N-deal will steam on ahead. What price will mullahyam and Emir singh extrtact?

Will stalled fin reforms go ahead finally?

What will be Purr-cash half-carat’s fate? Am sure the noble politburo is a large hearted and forgiving body… heh heh.

What way will the muss turn? Will they vote cong now after INC ties up with great satan yamrika itself? heh heh.

What will maya and the UNPA do? Lots of tamasha to come.

Bhajpa would do better to quietly start prepping for the mammonth mahabharat called the national polls 2009. The vote going against UPA would at most have added a few months here and there only to the nationalist camp.

Take heart! Persevering when the chips are down shows true character. The nationalists can do better than to bawl, b1tch, whine, curse and wail at this juncture. IMVVHO onlee, of course.

  14. Aryan says:

    Guys,

no need to be saddened by UPA victory, you know what they say “be afraid of what u ask for, because you just might get it”. UPA wanted to stay in power, and now it can. Most people in India dont vote on the national security or nuclear deals, they vote on ‘bread and butter’ issues. UPA will be mauled badly by staying in power for a few more months, by being blamed for the 14% inflation, and the BJP will only come to power with much bigger numbers then it would have now, better believe it. Their bad karma are gowna come back and bite the UPA in their behind.

Sting tapes to be telecast only after Speaker’s nod

Meanwhile, the sting operation tapes showing a man giving Rs one crore in cash to the three BJP MPs to abstain from voting will be telecast only after getting permission from the Lok Sabha Speaker, sources in a television channel said.

“Since this is a matter of privilege of the House, the tapes cannot be telecast by the news channel,” the sources said. The tapes have been given to the Speaker, they said. (PTI)

HAD NEWS CHANNEL TAKEN THE NOD OF SPEAKER BFORE TELECASTING “CASH FOR QUESTION SCAM”
NOW CHANNEL SHOULD COME CLEAN ON THIS OTHERWISE JUST BE ASSURED YOU TOO WILL BE CURSED AS TO THE POLITICIAN BY COMMON PEOPLE.

SPEAKER MUST GIVE THE PERMISSION TO SHOW THE CD IMMEDIATELY

    At least I did.

CHILL guys, if you are upset with the outcome… wait, some times many of you might not comprehend what ‘realpolitik’ is!

I did do my bit by ‘informing’ you the latest (so did i put a time stamp too) at time, at least i owe this much to Offstumped and especially to yossarian.

Nuke deal is in the interest of the country,

i could never fathom why the BJP did not support it.

Jealous they were the not the ones to take credit ?

They can harp on about matters of security & economy all they want but partisan issues need to take second place on matters like the deal. If this country wants to keep growing its going to need power to keep the party going, simple as that.

Come the next elections, the BJP will win, one hopes decisively, No more of this coalition crap.

i can’t imagine any party surviving with the economy in the current state.

  21. Sachin says:

I’m not sure whether its good or bad tha the UPA survived. we need political stability for our economy’s sake, the UPA has been exposed for the corrupt goons that they are, they will not get any sympathy from foolish voters…

    not so bad i’d say

  22. yossarin says:

blr_p thats a naive view. Do you think the congress would have seriously gone to parliament to face a confidence motion on the support of BJP ? The bjp’s support or opposition is inconsequential to the deal. Hence the bjp’s realpolitik makes sense. The congress would have used the bjp’s support and still slept with the left. look at Manmohan’s gracious praise of HKSurjeet and Basu and vitriol on LKA and silence on Karat. The fault lines will not have changed. The moral of the story here is the Nuclear deal should have never been allowed to become a survival question for any government. They should have institutionalized bipartisanship on foreign policy to insulate it from the dust and din of electoral politics.

  23. vijay says:

    Hi Prasanna,

HTS finally showed the Italian connection

  24. jujung says:

The “weak” PM is right in his remarks about the “iron man” Advani. :)

Yossarin should probably post the entire speech of the PM.
    http://www.pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=40564

    Excerpts:
“Carrying forward the process started by Shri Rajiv Gandhi of preparing India for the 21st century, I outlined a far reaching programme of economic reform whose fruits are now visible to every objective person. Both the Left and the BJP had then opposed the reform. Both had said we had mortgaged the economy to America and that we would bring back the East India Company. Subsequently both these parties have had a hand at running the Government. None of these parties have reversed the direction of economic policy laid down by the Congress Party in 1991. The moral of the story is that political parties should be judged not by what they say while in opposition but by what they do when entrusted with the responsibilities of power.”

BJP is certainly known for its convictions, far-sightedness and of course, certainly represents the economic “right” as Yossarin never forgets to remind us. ;)

  25. Puneet says:

Yossarin, its being reported that there are 7 BJP MP’s which did not vote with them. Other than HTS any idea who are the rest?

  26. yossarin says:

the number is 4 – 2 from karnataka, 1 from gujarat and 1 from UP.

  27. yossarin says:

jujung – LKA was very clear we are not against the deal :) weak PM is still weak the facts of his 4 year record dont change.

“The moral of the story here is the Nuclear deal should have never been allowed to become a survival question for any government. They should have institutionalized bipartisanship on foreign policy to insulate it from the dust and din of electoral politics.”

    absolutely agreed.

SO is it accurate to say this did not happen because UPA did not reveal the details of the deal and let imaginations run rampant ?

I’m led to believe the reason was to prevent the NPT mafia in the US from scuttling the deal before anything more could happen.

  30. zzz101 says:

BJP and its allies never have had the guts to stand up by themselves and fight. In the current episode they wanted to ride on the shoulders of Left first and then Mayawati. Why do they seem incapable of doing something by themselves. They just do no bite the bullet when the time comes. They are like scavengers wanting to feed on others kill. I see guys in this blog hoping, almost praying, for Congress to fall in next gen elections. It may not happen and you may carry on increasing your BP

The bold is always the victor in the long run and a schemer is at the butt of radicule.

To be bold one has to have conviction, honesty and clarity of ones own ideas even if they are wonky. Tell your guys about it.

  31. palash says:

    Two questions:

AFP reports during the raucous with cash/bribe

“State television’s coverage of the debate was immediately interrupted and images of Mother Teresa were broadcast instead”

    - Why Mother Teresa?!!

“If we do not secure energy supplies, growth will stop and we will not be able to fight poverty,” Rahul Gandhi, the son of Congress party chief Sonia, told the Lok Sabha.

    - So the NREGA or whatever is a total failure for fighting poverty?

  32. yossarin says:

    guts for what ?

engineer defections :) this euphoria is shortlived we will all go back to the drawing board the way it was before the vote. in terms of ground reality nothing has changed. if anything has changed it is the momentum to push the deal through up to the US Congress beyond which lies a big black hole called the US General elections.

  34. Janpar Mallai says:

    This just released guys:

Suspended BJP MPs Somabhai Patel, Babubhai Katara, Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, Chandrabhan Singh (Madhya Pradesh), Haribhau Rathod (Maharashtra), Manjunath (Karnataka) and Sangliana (Bangalore) voted for the motion, admitted BJP leaders. Woman MP from Udupi Manorama Madhwaraj absented herself during voting after being present earlier in the day.

P P Koya (Lakshadweep) and Ramswarup Prasad (Nalanda) were the two JD(U) MPs. Two of BJD MPs were also believed to have cross voted. One Akali Dal is also said to have cross voted, while a Shiv Sena MP Tukaram Renge was absent. PTI

For the BJP guys, they were either suspended, OR I know anxious about not getting tickets in the next LS election (This I can say about the rebel MP’s from Karnataka, they were all going to be dropped)…I don’t foresee a March-April election. I suspect they will wrap up the deal in August, let everything run smoothly and then try to leave on a supposed high note, maybe elections at year-end?

  35. Janpar Mallai says:

oh ho Palash, as if Rahul, Sonia or MMS have ever written any of their own material. I wonder what it must be like to have a conversation with them with no script?

  36. Raghu says:

    My few cents:

    1) BJP got from Sangliana what it deserves..!!
This evangelist who (when he was a cop) never tried to hide his pro-Christian stand during all disputes in BLR involving other religions was given a seat..

    2) IMO BJP got into this avoidable situation by getting involved in this tamasha. They should have allowed Left and UPA fight it out..

    3) IMO Advani’s speech was pathetic. Not being prepared is not at all acceptable (i.e. NPT)..

    4) Its high time Modi gets into national politics

    5) Look at MMS’s message.. he spewed venom on Advani and was relatively light on left (His grouse was only against Karat..)

    6) Don’t take the English media too seriously.. You have to see what the vernacular press says.. they mould opinions of voting classes.. (IMO: People who watch English news are satisfied with the intellectual orgasms they get from doing so and stay back on the voting day)

what do you mean the NREGA or the great loan waiver scheme ? Jee i wonder what reforms this chaprasi wants to take credit for ? the ones that he undertook in 1991 under the barrel of the gun of the IMF or the ones that he was too timid to carry out, god forbid he piss of his task-master Karat.

“The moral of the story is that political parties should be judged not by what they say while in opposition but by what they do when entrusted with the responsibilities of power.”

this from the chaprasi, whose party howled and screamed outside PMO during the kandahar episode seeking the release of terrorists ( their constituents) admoninshing the vajpayee govt for not negotiating with terrorists, while presiding over the deaths of 5,000 odd indians in terror attacks, giving India the dubious distinction for a while of having most terror related civilian causalties, even worse then Iraq !!!

the chaprasi and his chamchas got some jokes !!

  41. Manu says:

Did you guys notice how Rahul baba’s speech style was a total plagiarization of Democrat politicians in the US? Hilary and Obama always talk about a single mom in Kentucky who needs two jobs to afford healthcare, a college going girl in Iowa who cannot pay her tuition, yada yada… Rahul baba similarly brought up Kalavati.

There is a grooming cell working on him behind the scenes. I have to admit that they are smart to not give him too much exposure yet. Creates some mystery, some aura around him for the common man.

  42. Bharat says:

This what wrote by Navin Upadhyay | New Delhi in The Pioneer.

“The BJP must also take a serious look into its shortcomings. Its failure to keep flock together and poach on the Congress MPs exposed the absence of a Pramod Mahajan-type manager. The party also unwittingly gave the impression it was a house divided on the nuclear issue and several of its stalwarts rarely spoke against the deal.”

I agree to a great extent, on above observation. BJP did the same mistake before the 2004 election, they were trying keep both DMK and AIDMK happy. Finally DMK quit and results in BJP-NDA lost power.

We have not seen, BJP sopke out decisively on the deal and exposing the shortcomings of the deal. Now, they must get up and awaken the patiotic nation the danger of the deal in present form.

    Bharat

  43. Prasanna says:

Suresh (who used to comment regularly during Karnataka elections)

If you are reading this blog,it comes has a shock to me that Karnataka MP’s have desperately failed the BJP

Karnataka send 18 BJP to Lok Sabha. The great Ramachandra Bidappa died and Bangarappa become an SP MP

    So out of the 16

3 MP’s openly defied the whip and crossvoted
    2 MP’s abstained
1 MP was too sick to participate
1 MP just resigned to become a minister in the state

Only 9 have voted based on party guidelines

    Worrying signs

    Manu,

“Rahul baba similarly brought up Kalavati. There is a grooming cell working on him behind the scenes. I have to admit that they are smart to not give him too much exposure yet. Creates some mystery, some aura around him for the common man.”

There is saying out west, ‘You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still very much a pig’. enough said.

  45. RoW says:

    BJP’s “stage-managed” Cash-in-the-well drama has badly recoiled back on it’s face !

Advani also got back a taste of his own medicine from the PM.

BJP and its supporters now have enough time to lick their wounds, while their “anti-national” stand of going against the N-deal completely isolates them from the voting class.

Vajpayee did not attend the Trust Vote – simply becaue he did not support the opportunistic stand of his Party vis-a-vis the N-deal.

BJP had a good opportunity to come back to power – but unfortunately they do not have Vajpayee to lead them at this stage ! With Advani at the helm, BJP is certain to get badly marginalised in the next elections…

  46. Ravindra says:

    RoW,

Probably, according to you, only those sting operations where BJP members are caught red-handed are genuine, while those where non-BJP members are caught, they are “stage managed” etc.

By the way, I wonder where Tehelka, the specialist in sting operations, is these days. In a scenario of such a close trust vote, they ought to have been active in business. Of course, Tarun Tejpal might have discovered that if he did go ahead with stings this time, his own masters might find it embarrassing, so he might have held back.

  47. Ravindra says:

By when is the Speaker expected to/ supposed to give his ruling on the evidence on the sting operation?

If the evidence is found to be true, will it make any difference to the vote? or the members?

  48. Jiggs says:

    Ravindra…

    No…ironically no.

The MP’s will be suspended or some like that.

  49. Jiggs says:

    Yossarin…

Here’s some thing for you to think, Constitutional experts say: “Voting after scam ‘improper’”

Experts sat that the trust vote should not have taken place immediately after Cashgate hit Parliament.
The Speaker should have investigated the complaint and taken a decision before proceeding with the vote

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Voting_after_scam_improper/rssarticleshow/3266790.cms

Although, it has been clarified in the article that their is no rule to this effect.

  50. arjun says:

BJP should deny legitimicay to this govt. Right now they should wait for speaker to do something. Prakash Javadekar said they are giving one week’s time. He also said that there is new good channel where the tape will be aired. NDTV and CNN IBN hopefully should be left out of this.

  51. Jiggs says:

    arjun…

You are right, but dont forget, that the speaker himself will be purged by the Commies.

This will be risky, coz the Congis will definetly put in somebody who will toe their line and then the thing gets murky..coz the case wont be investigated fairly and Congis will go on beating their drums..sayin BJP made it up.

The best thing like Javdekar said is AIR it on prime time.

  52. Jiggs says:

BJP whip violators to invite lashing

    http://www.dailypioneer.com/indexn12.asp?main_variable=NATION&file_name=nt3%2Etxt&counter_img=3

About time, this purge is required, HAVE NO MERCY…

  53. RoW says:

There is no need to sack the BJP whip violators – as they were already on their way out – and should be in UPA fold by next elections !

BJP does not have any legitimacy to “deny legitimicay to this govt”. Right now they can wait for the speaker to initiate a investigation – which will take its own course.

Prakash Javadekar is “nobody” to give one week’s time to the Speaker. BJP’s own Bangaru bribery case was dragged for a long time and after he was convicted – no action was taken by BJP !

ALL THEY CAN DO IS CRY HOARSE WHILE LICIKING THEIR WOUNDS…
