Gujarat Polls 2007: Sonia Gandhi’s Self Goals – Time to change speech writer !

It started with Sonia Gandhi borrowing a phrase out of Narendra Modi’s dictionary calling him a “merchant of death” or “maut ke saudaagar”. She then went on to describe his administration as lacking in integity or “beimaan”. Now she is referring to the BJP Government in Gujarat as “swindlers“. Her lackeys were not far behind with Digvijay Singh talking of “Hindu Terrorism” and Abhishek Singhvi talking of “conducting trials in International Courts”.

In fact negative rhetoric seems to have become the hallmark of Sonia Gandhi’s speeches in the last 30 days with not a single new idea being advanced.

For example consider her speech at the AICC in New Delhi on 17th Nov, the highlights of the speech that got the most press were her attacks on the BJP. Look at the adjectives she used then -

“stubbornly uncooperative” and “obstructive”

Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas, ideals and institutions are “under sustained assault in the state of his birth itself and in other BJP-ruled states”.

Then comes the 1st December speech in Navasri where she had these adjectives to use

“The crime against women are increasing and anti-social elements feel secure as they are getting state protection. Today the rulers of Gujarat are merchants of fear and death,”

The apparent provocation for this was the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case. Now Offstumped had shown back in April with data from the NHRC for 2004-2005 that deaths in Police Custody were on the increase in Congress ruled Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and most surprising of all the National Capital New Delhi were the Police directly reports to the Union Home Ministry of the UPA Government.

The National Capital under Shivraj’s Patil supervision and Sonia Gandhi’s proximity had 18 fake encounter cases in 2004-2005 !

If this was not a self goal what is ?

But that was not all, the 1st December speech was also a self goal for the Congress on the subject of terrorism. The speech had this to say:

“But is it not not true that terrorist attacks on Jammu’s Raghunath temple, Akshardham temple (near Gandhinagar) and on Parliament happened when they were in power,”

It is laughable the Congress should bring these up when every Mass Terror attack in the last 4 years have been in Congress ruled states and the UPA Government at the Center with a strong correlation between Muslim Appeasement and Mass Terror.

The adjectives get worse with speeches, consider this one in Jasdan, Rajkot:

They talk of Gandhi and practice what Godse stood for.

References to Gandhi are particularly amusing to see coming from Sonia given her conspiracy of silence in Nandigram and its Muslim Victims. So should we take it that she is practising a see no evil, hear evil brand of Gandhianism.

Then comes yesterday’s speech in Kutch at the Ramlila Maidan in Gandhidham which also a self goal on the subject of debt when she called the government “swindlers”:

Congress, unlike the BJP, matched its words with deeds. She pointed out that if Gujarat had indeed achieved all-round development under Modi, why were 50 per cent of cotton farmers in debt in north Gujarat,

This is amazing spin coming from a party who’s Government at the Center just came up with a report on Solving Agricultural Indebtedness that had 46 recommendations on lending more money to get Farmers into greater debt and just 1 recommendation on how to encourage the Farmer to get out of doubt.

Offstumped Bottomline: Meanwhile while her speech writers are busy scoring self goals for the Congress we are still looking if the Congress President has a single new innovative idea for Gujarat. We always knew she couldnt get her own lines but little did we know her speech writers would run out of ideas this early in the campaign that the only innovation in her speeches is in the choice of adjectives to describe Narendra Modi and his BJP administration. Its perhaps time Sonia Gandhi gave her speech-writers the boot and wrote some lines of her own.

*MAGIC OF “GODDESS” SONIA GANDHI FALLS FLAT IN GUJARAT*

Madam Sonia Gandhi has lost her nerves, verves and curves.

People of Gujarat will teach her a resounding lesson.

Her decline in political fortunes has begun.

Her next PM in waiting is nowhere in sight in Gujarat.

Gujarat Congress is tottering and in doldrums.

People of Gujarat want a stable, progressive Government.

People of Gujarat will teach lessons to BJP, Congress, dissidents, opportunists, all of them by showing them their true worth.

This time round the record of having the most numbers of tainted candidates goes to Congress. A dubious record of sort.

I just don’t believe these news report writers! Aren’t there balanced journos anymore?

    http://in.news.yahoo.com/071205/211/6o2d8.html

When Sonia and Congress scream about Sohrabbudin, they are secular! But when Modi attempts to counter their charges, the report says…“Chief Minister Narendra Modi has played the communal card again.”

Note the tone of the report…

“It seems that the Chief Minister is back in his Hindutva poster boy mode to score political points. Last time, it was “Miyan Musharraf” who helped him win the polls and this time around, it seems as if fake encounter victim, Sohrabuddin Sheikh, will do the trick for Modi.”

“He managed to whip up such a communal frenzy with his words…”

looks like congress and madam sonia are fast losing mental balance….

  6. Raaj says:

    Interesting turnarounds:

2002 – NM started with communal politics, congress cried like anything that he is communal and he doesn’t talk about development.

2007 – NM started development talks and congress kept on bringing communal subjects. And when he also started talking their language, they are furious :-)

    Very interesting.

I hope Modi wins, otherwise BJP will crash to negativity and these people will rein. A lot of stakes for all.

  7. pc says:

Is this such a big surprise. When have our politicians fought on principles and policies ? Whether it is congress or bjp all parties descend to the same level when it comes to elections. If you are waging a propaganda then it is ok, time well spent, carry on :-)

  8. Aryan says:

    @pc

‘When have our politicians fought on principles and policies ?’

Modi is running on his record of development, and his principles against curroption, and his anti terrorist policies.

  9. Concerned_Hindu says:

Gujarat elections will have far reaching consequences on India.
If BJP wins, it will grow in confidence which it desperately needs. If it looses, it will be a body blow.

The stakes are much higher for BJP than for Congress. Although it’s the highest for the media of the country. It has been baying for Modi’s blood since last 5 years.
If Modi looses it will hound him like anything.

If Modi looses these are the likely scenarios

    1. Congress embolden by victory will enforce early general elections
    2. It will most probably win since BJP will be in demoralised state
    3. That would mean return of Nehru-Gandhi raj for many more years.
    4. That means again years of monopolosing of Indian economy and may be a return to Socialist model [The license quota raj]
    5. Stocks will start falling almost immediately.
    6. Gujarat which was growing at more than 15% will be worst affected since Congress will bring in Nehru’s “Hindu rate of growth” back to Gujarat.
    7. Reservations for Muslims will become a norm as there won’t be any one to oppose them.
    8. Reservations in private sector will come a reality

The Lion has to WIN. Gujaratis, please come out and stand by your Lion.

  10. Photonman says:

“That means again years of monopolosing of Indian economy and may be a return to Socialist model [The license quota raj]”

Guess it’s too late for anyone, including the Left, to do that…:))

  11. jujung says:

Perhaps you should be more concerned about Modi scoring self goals, justifying the fake encounters and all.. behaving like a tribal leader. That shows the great respect he has for law.

  12. Aryan says:

God forbid Mr Modi kills terrorists to prevent the loss of Indian lives, because its too ‘tribal’. I suppose he should have let them go, so that they can kill more Indians. For a while this year, India had the dubious distinction of being the country with the most terrorist related casaulties in the world after Iraq, but, hey, DONT KILL TERRORISTS, ITS TOO TRIBAL !

Jujung where is the future mai-baap of Kangress? The Indian sun too hot for his tender skin?

  14. jujung says:

    Aryan,

Since when did Modi become an arbiter of justice??
You should probably know that Modi’s Govt is currently prosecuting the police officers responsible for the fake encounter, and he condemned the encounter in the supreme court to avoid hassles which is obviously an act.
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Modis_stand_in_SC_a_farce_Counsel/articleshow/2598955.cms

We are not living in a country, where mullahs decide who is a criminal and apparently punish them by throwing stones or cutting hands or sm such things. The way you defend Modi, it seems like you are craving for such a society where Modi’s will be doing such things.

Now yossarin will be showing statistics of fake encounters in other states. But that’s beside the point coz there the problem is like corruption.. everyone condemns it and sees the need to rectify it. Here, we have a popular leader exhorting people in favor of such things and people providing justifications!!

  15. Archee says:

    ROTFL!

Yes, Kangress does, but don’t talk about it!
    Keep on buddy,

  16. concerned voter says:

You may love Modi or hate him.

A tribal leader of Gujarat has done wonders for the development of Gujarat.

He is under attack because of his performance only.

Communalism, secularism, violation of human rights, swindling, autocracy, are all charges levelled by those very people who are pastmasters in indulging such things. Levellers of charges are all living in glass houses.

As a voter in Gujarat, I am proud to be living in a state which is progressive, democratic, enlightened and liberal.

As a voter, I consider it as my privilege to repudiate all the charges levelled against Modi. I will vote for Modi and his BJP candidate. I want a stable government with comfortable majority, under the vitiated circustances, to rule Gujarat for the next 5 years.

Modi has a place in history. Time will only tell the difference.

  17. ck says:

    hi concerned voter,
congratulations on having such a tough and capable chief minister…most of us outside gujarat are jealous of you guys. if the middle class, educated class come out to vote like in 2002, modi will win easily; but if they stay at home like in 2004 general elections — there is a slim chance that congress might come to power. i know you are going to vote, but please rally the people around you to vote also…especially those lazy aunties/uncles who think that they have better things to do — like watch stupid cricket or kyunki tele-serial…

  18. concerned voter says:

There is always a factor of poetic justice in favour of one who is truthful, brave and ingenious. Modi is not a quitter. Look for the result.

Sonia Gandhi has sown the wind. She will reap the whirlwind.

  19. Aryan says:

    @jujung

‘You should probably know that Modi’s Govt is currently prosecuting the police officers responsible for the fake encounter’

It’s not the Modi Government, its the Courts that are trying the police officers. There is a seperation of executive and judiciary branches, get your facts straight.

‘We are not living in a country, where mullahs decide who is a criminal and apparently punish them by throwing stones or cutting hands or sm such things.’

Are you serious ? are you familiar with the name, taslima nasreen ? Do you know who has her on the run ? Are you familiar with half a million hindu pandit refugees ? I suppose it wasnt the kashmiri mullahs fault, hindus just decided to exile themselves, live in refugee camps ?

‘The way you defend Modi, it seems like you are craving for such a society where Modi’s will be doing such things.’

News flash – we do live in a society where such things happen, ENCOUNTERS are a phenomenon in india, all over india.
And yeah, I do crave for a society where terrorists are killed, and where India doesnt have most civilian casaulties in the world, pardon me, if that offends your psuedo liberal sensibilities !

  20. Aryan says:

    @jujung

You can root for the human rights of the terrorists, I will rooting for Mr. Modi to win in these elections.
