Gujarat Polls 2007 – Is the Congress throwing in the towel ?

Fresh Updates below: TOI?on how the Congress?Manifesto is silent on the riots and is inconclusive in criticizing Modi’s record?

So what is with the Congress no holds barred attack on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP ?

First it was Congress President Sonia Gandhi calling Modi a “merchant of death” and accusing the BJP of being lax on Terrorism. Next it was Congress General Secy Digvijay Singh accusing the BJP of “Hindu Terrorism” while comparing it with Islamic Terorrism. Then you have verbal gymnast Abhishek and Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi with these words of defense on Sonia’s speech

He is a violator of global human rights, he deserved to be “tried and convicted” not only by Indian courts but also by the international justice system. ” AICC spokesperson A M Singhvi told PTI.

He was reacting to the BJP’s counter attack on Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s election rally in Gujarat, where she had termed Modi as a “merchant of death”.

For such people “merchant of death” is not only appropriate but is in fact “mild”, Singhvi said.

The Gujarat Congress must be counting its losses after this no-holds barred invective that went beyond Modi and for the first time has started to refer to Hindus as Terrorists. Just last week Bharathsinh Solanki was talking of his Hindutva being Secular.

So clearly the Congress President did not have the majority Hindu voter in Gujarat in mind when she talked of “merchants of death” and her lackey-in-chief in Gujarat Digvijay Singh spoke of “Hindu Terrorism”. Now the Muslim vote in Gujarat is not so significant as to get the Congress over the hump with rhetoric of this kind.

So who exactly did Sonia Gandhi and the Congress have in mind when they went off the handle over the weekend ?

To appreciate that one needs to put into perspective the larger sequence of events here. A muslim majority in Nandigram is targetted by the Congress’s psuedo-secular ally CPI-M and the Congress response is mild to put it least while Sonia Gandhi herself maintained deafening silence. Then comes along Taslima Nasreen to knock Mozzamat Akhera Bibi’s gangrape off the headlines as the CPI-M appeased the Islamist power brokers while the Congress equivocated for a meaningful response unable to take a firm stance.

So you have a Sonia Gandhi worried about the Muslim vote across India with the wounds of Nandigram’s Muslim victims staring her in the face. What do you do if you are Sonia Gandhi ?

Well you deflect attention to focus on a figure that is hated by Muslims of all hues, the common man on the street aggrieved over Nandigram and the Islamist power brokers peddling paranoia over Taslima Nasreen.

Offstumped Bottomline: By attacking Modi and the BJP with rhetoric borrowed straight off the Islamist Theasaurus, Sonia Gandhi and the Congress are sending two signals. The first is that the Congress has thrown the towel in Gujarat. It can no longer hope to attract the majority vote in Gujarat and hence its leadership has given up on appealing to the Hindu Majority. The second signal the Congress is sending is to the Muslim Vote Bank across the rest of country that when it came to the crunch in Gujarat it took on Modi and hence it can still pander and appease despite Nandigram and Taslima.

  2. jujung says:

WOW! Accusing the BJP of “Hindu terrorism” is somehow equivalent to referring to Hindus as terrorists!! And if someone calls Modi as a “merchant of death”, that somehow implies Hindu voters wouldn’t vote for them!!!

    Good jokes :)

  3. yossarin says:

Jujung – amuse yourself for this is the only entertainment you will likely get, this election is practically over thanks to Digvijay singh. The real question is if this was a calculated move by Digvijay Singh and if so what was his real motive and on who’s behest was he conspiring to do the congress in ?

  4. Concerned_Hindu says:

No over confidence on Gujarat please.
The apathy of Hindu middle class cannot be underestimated.
If Hindu middle class remains inside its home on the election day like it did in 2004 general elections all good work of Modi will have little meaning.

For Gujarat in particular and for India who is under relentless jihad+commie+congress attack, Modi’s win is important.

But every vote will be important and it is important that Mayavati cuts through Congress vote and BJP Rebels do not cause much damage.
Modi should win and win handsomely.

  5. Archee says:

And if someone calls Modi as a “merchant of death”, that somehow implies Hindu voters wouldn’t vote for them!!!

I doubt whether Sonia’s low IQ rhetoric will even rouse the Muslim rabble, but then what would you expect of a semi-literate trash from Europe.

  6. prashant says:

The important to note here is the ATTITUDE of so called Mainstream Secular MEDIA.
REMEMBER few days back there was Hue & CRY FROM THEM about one ad that mentioned about Banerjee Commission.
AND YESTERDAY I was seeing NDTV(For Entertainment) wHERE THEY WERE SHOWING sCENE FROM PARZANIA…..
Is that NOT against election code & is it NOT that Election Commission should take nOTE OF THAT???

  7. Gujjuman says:

Congress has lost all its hope in Gujarat. Using such language shows desperation levels of congress leadership. It also shows to what extent they can go to pander to Muslim vote banks.

  8. Jyotindra says:

Coming events cast their shadows. So wrote Thomas Hardy.
Everybody who is anybody in Congress has begun to hurl choicest words of abuse in public meetings for NM, calling him dog, cobra, liar, oppressor, tyrant, et al.
To top the dressing Sonia called him ‘merchant of death’.
So where arguments have run out, such use of invectives clearly show that Congress party is being led to disaster by Sonia and her henchmen.
Dinsha Patel against NM is under the circumstances a rather belated choice of a beleagured party. If NM wave were to surface before poll date, slowly but surely, NM’s party win can become a handsome win.
And where in the picture is heir apparent?

  9. prashant says:

IF the Congress will Throw away the Toilet then…Shame Shame
After all CONGRESS dont wear KNICKER as they are after all NOT RSS man.

IF the Congress will Throw away the TOWEL then…Shame Shame
After all CONGRESS dont wear KNICKER as they are after all NOT RSS man.

  11. Sharat says:

Congress is heading towards a majore embarrasment in Gujarat…..It is going to be defeated by the people of gujarat…..it will be defeated by the people of gujarat till the time it will have non-performers like Soniaben, Abhishek singhwi , jayanti natarajan, digvijay singh in it’s rank and file….

These useless sychphantic mouthpieces of congress are no match to scintillating hardwork and extra-ordinary performance of Narendra Modi….

  12. Raaj says:

    Sharat,

I hope that (modi winning with large no of seats) happens and I hope the entire nations votes and only votes for a party which has only one plank that is development.

Alas ! that is not the case with Indian Polity and even congress knows this and trying to go all out.

    Yossarin:
I read the book from Amartya Sen “The Argumentative Indian”. There is nothing I enjoyed in that book though. But your arguments for the Gujarat truely makes you an argumentative Indian. And for a change it is for other side. Most of the arguments used to be only 1 side of the story. We need more Indians to argue and question our politicians.

Politicians become answerable to you only when you question them.

I hope we will be true democracy some day

  13. Jyotindra says:

I put in the blog hereinbefore:

“And where in the picture is heir apparent?”

Any clue about him with anybody?

  14. prashant says:

I think Gujarat people must be cautious AND vOTE Vigourouly otherwise 2004 mandate will happen.
Anyway that 2004 mandate and UPA rule has done One good thing.
Exposed so called Secular Mainstream Media.
Yossarin i request you to Expose these 5 star Women Activist like Shabana,Hashmi,Karat,Arundhati Barkha etc on their Silence to “sHOCKING incident in Assam”
Surprisingly Human Right Commission,Women Commission headed by that Rajasthan Congress leader has even failed to meet that victim.

  15. Aryan says:

If you vote for Congress, the terrorists win !

    thank you Mr. Bush =)

  16. Concerned_Hindu says:

“If you vote for Congress, the terrorists win”

well point in case – AFZHAL GURU …
    get it?

  17. Aryan says:

BJP should keep the momentum in Gujarat, and win with a thumping majority of 150+ seats.

Every Congressi, biased media journalist, teesta setalvad, mukul sinha, medha patkar, the psuedo-secular, pseudo-liberals, communists should be socially boycotted, be deported to Italy, OR sent to live in Pakistan in NWFP, SWAT, JEM or on a LET camp, show em the true definition of “merchants of death”

The REVOLUTION will not be televised !

  18. vishal says:

Modi will surely win, but its just because theres no other descent choice with the voters.I’ve heard that keshubhai & his cronies sucked up most of the earthquake aid. But if & only if he showed the courage to accept his inaction in the Godhra aftermath, which is a fact.

  19. vishal says:

“But if & only if ”

    Should be

    “But I hope”

  20. Aryan says:

Mr Modi is the best and only choice for the next Indian Prime Minister

  21. bhanu says:

    Yossarin
I am digressing from the topic but I am very perplexed with an issue.

I read in TOI that a man called Atif was a witness to the making of bombs for the Malegaon blasts and that the ATS had recorded his statements and made him a prosecution witness. But Atif left Malegaon, went to Eastern UP and even submitted an affidavit in a court which said that his statement to the ATS was made under coercion.

Now the source of my confusion is how else are the police going to get details of attacks if they don’t question suspected supporters? Will these people come of their own accord and divulge details? I don’t think so.

And what role does the judiciary play? How come they admit such affidavits?

I know i might be sounding pretty naive compared to the other brains on this blog but this is something which has always bothered me.

I would like some answers on this from you and all the other frequent bloggers.

  22. Jyotindra says:

So the bloggers have still not answered about the whereabouts of the heir apparent vis-a-vis Gujarat election.
Sonia’s new programme of meetings in Gujarat is announced. Pray, where is the heir apparent?

  23. Gujjuman says:

Baba is playing cricket with other babalogs in NSUI.

  24. Concerned_Hindu says:

    folks,
please don’t go over board on modi. i am a modi supporter and i know how important this election is. but i would still be a little skeptical about celebrating too soon.

    bear the following in mind

    1. in india good governance does not translate to winning elections. in fact in most cases it is quite the opposite

    2. elections are won mostly because of mathematics. for example – vilasrao deshmukh is the most useless CM any state can have but he recaptured mah. on basis of alliance.

    3. bjp support base is urban middle class. now if there was an emotional appeal people come out to vote in larger strength. this time the case is diff. also the pre-poll surveys give a false air of confidence to the middle class who do not come out to vote on election day.
if the %age of votes cast is low, it’s goodbye to bjp for sure.

    4. check the last major elections in guj. the 2004 general elections. bjp just scraped through. congress won 12 seats.

    5. we are already in the phase of media driven elections. knowing indian media’s allergy for modi and bjp it’s a given that media is going to go all hammer and tongs on bjp as days near. we cannot underestimate that effect

the idea here is not to present a dim picture. if you have people / friends / relatives in gujarat make them aware that going out on election day is so important.

the facade of over confidence by sushma swaraj, jaitely is not going to help. we need people to come out and vote in high proportion.
since rss is not really going to help modi with great zeal, a word of mouth can be at least a little effective.

    jai hind.

  25. Aryan says:

Mr. Modi should be able to win this election with a fair margin.

    * Modi is bound to get the rural vote, as he has connected every village in gujarat with electricity, better roads, check dams etc

    * Congress has shot itself in the foot, with pursuing/supporting the sohrabuudin investigation and the tehelka expose. This is bound to polarize the electorate and help Mr. Modi.

    * Even if Congress hadnt figured that they have lost already ( as yossarin concluded ), and had sonia gandhi and digvijay singh unleash an all-out assault on hindutva anyway, the fact that they made these statements is again, bound to help the BJP in a big way. If there was an ounce of intelligent cerebral matter in Sonia’s head she would have kept her mouth shut about hindutva. This is Gujarat, hindus here are very aware, this is not some ‘banana pradesh’ !

    * The only problem BJP/Modi have are internal ones and the anti-incumbency vote. We will have to see how much damage the Keshubhai and company will inflict, but people will see them as hindutva-lite, so Congressi voters wont vote for them, and BJP voters would rather vote for the real deal. The anti-incumbency vote could come to play as BJP has been in power since 1990.

    * The bookies have Mr Modi winning, on a 19P to 1 RE basis. It’s these peoples business to put their money where their mouth is, so they cant be wrong ? right ? I certainly hope so ! =)

  26. Radhika SIngh says:

This term “maut ka saudaghar” applies to her husband Mr.Rajive Gandhi also for 1983 riots . Just by apologising before nation by her stoogie Manmohan Singh doesn’t mean people forget. Rajive did nothing but encourage butchery fo Sikhs , just compare Modi with Rajive Gandhi .

  28. Aryan says:

The Congressi heart only bleeds for certain ’selective minorities’ with a caveat, it depends on who it is that’s doing the killing.

Hindus in kashmir, UP blasts, Mumbai blasts are fair game, their lives are cheap.

Muslims cannot be molested, UNLESS, its the CPM thats doing it, then its OK. i.e.
    Riots in gujarat = genocide
communists raping/killing in bengal = no comments

Congressis generally dont recommend the killing of sikhs, unless ofcourse, they are ones doing it.

Rajiv gandhi, allowed the sikh massacre, because sikh bodygaurds took revenge for a repressive response to an insurgency by killing Indira gandhi. an insurgency that was facilitated by his ‘mommy’ to win elections !

I wonder if he got the irony.

  29. Bhaskar Chatterjee says:

The history has shown since time immemorial that Hindus are not united. Now caste has become politicalised.

Islamism, Jehadism is here to stay for foreseeable future. And Psuedos have no idea how to handle that, because if “Psuedo Part A” takes action against them, “Psuedo Party B” is going to instigate the Muslims.

Thus “Psuedo Party A” is NOT to tackle Islamic terrorism. Its going to leave common man at mercy of Jehadi thugs, terrorists.

This will continue for next 20-30 years, will see hardening of Hindu identity. And we will see more chaos.

UNLESS THIS PSUEDO SECULARISM IS THROWN OUT OF INDIA, NOTHING MUCH COULD BE EXPECTED TO HAPPEN.

  30. Bhaskar Chatterjee says:

THE DAY HINDUS UNITE, THE HINDU-MUSLIM PROBLEM WILL BE RESOLVED IN A DAY –Thus spoke Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, pre-eminent Indian Novelist in 1920s.

Diving Hindus politically along caste, and rally muslims religiously cannot save psuedos in India for long.

  31. Bhaskar Chatterjee says:

    http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071205/asp/nation/story_8631298.asp

    Mahuva/Chotali, Dec. 4: Narendra Modi had a not-so-simple question.

    “Are Hindus terrorists?”

The crowd had no doubt. “Nathee (no).”

    “Then vote BJP.”

In his campaign tour of Saurashtra, where his stock seems lowest, Modi has been urging Hindus to reject the Congress in the December 11 and 16 Assembly polls for “branding them terrorists”.

  32. Archee says:

Sonia’s next salvo: Gujarat headed by ‘govt of swindlers’

At lest Sonia Maino is out there in the sun, talking trash. Where is Rahul Baba?

  33. Reason says:

The comments stressing on voter turn out are significant. The turnout in Gujarat 2002 assembly election was 61.5%. BJP won 49.8% of those, and congress 39.3%. The turnout in Gujarat 2004 LS election was only 45%. BJP’s share dipped down to 47.3% and congress congress went up to 43.8%.

Rather than hoping for Mayawati to cut into congress votes, BJP should try to bring out its middle class and urban voters. A low turn out election without a dominant emotive theme can end up causing BJP some surprises.

  34. Ravindra says:

For a thoroughly sickening account of the Gujarat polls, watch NDTV India daily at 8.30 p.m. We have veteran Commie journo Vinod Dua (now sporting diamond studs on his earlobes) touring Gujarat, inciting favorable (to his ideology) comments on the state of affairs in Modi-land!

According to him, nothing, absolutely nothing, is right with the state. And everyone supposedly agrees with him, except, the goons belonging to the saffron wing!

  35. Ot says:

Well then, he deserves a new monicker: Vinod Hawa the airheaded!

  36. Ot says:

    From The Telegraph’s story:

‘He concluded: “You vote BJP and I will bring in Lakshmi. Lakshmi stands on a lotus. But have you ever seen her holding a clock (the NCP symbol)?”’
