Rahul Gandhi versus Narendra Modi

Bring it on says Offstumped

Well the spin is here and it is here to stay. Ever since the day the AICC announced that Rahul Gandhi would be made General Secretary we have been fed soundbites by Congress spin meisters and their media sympathisers on how the Congress was going to get a facelift, not a political or intellectual lift mind you.

So as the Congress prepares itself for Cosmetic Surgery of the Rahul Gandhi variety, the instrument of facial makeover seems to have been setup for some loss of face himself. First it was Abhishek Singhvi going head over heels with his Dhoni analogy only to highlight the lack of accomplishment of his ageing protege. Now it is the turn of Prakash Jaiswal, the Congress MP from Uttar Pradesh and Minister of State for Home Affairs who seems to have queered the pitch for the “not so young anymore” Gandhi even before he got his political bearings right.

Jaiswal on a visit to Gujarat had this to say

Rahul has jumped into the battlefield… He will play a decisive role in Gujarat….. No other party has such a popular youth leader

Taking cue from Jaiswal more sycophantic voices from Gujarat chimed in with BK Hariprasad, Congress Gen Secy claiming

Rahul will spearhead the campaign

So while the “not so young anymore” Rahul Gandhi is being setup for an uphill battle in Gujarat by his sycophants, he himself seems to be sobering down to the reality of the Congress Party. No less than 10 of his handlers had to accompany him to the Prime Minister’s residence to get him some positive press and credit around the NREGA.

While Offstumped had pointed out how Congress ruled states did badly on the NREGA, the Daily Pioneer today points out how Rahul Gandhi was trying to take credit for something the Prime Minister had already announced in his Independence Day speech on extending NREGA to the rest of the country.

The Narendra Modi versus Rahul Gandhi match up should make for some exciting political debate in the days to come as Gujarat hots up for elections.

Offstumped will be there watching.

I agree that a number of forward-looking and positive Governance intiatives are largely credited to our PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh (including the NREGA programme, RTI act, Indo-US nuclear deal, etc) and consequently the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have benefited from it. But the credit cannot not be taken away from him !

On the other side, the comparision being sought between Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi is not appropriate. While Rahul Gandhi has been appointed to a number of important national Party posts (General Secretary, CWC member, etc), Narendra Modi was infact taken-off them by BJP President and the RSS an year back. Narendra Modi is therefore just a Gujarat political phenomenon (and that’s the way his own party wants it). Not just that, there are too many detractors within BJP itself who would like to see the last of him !

  2. Reason says:

    >> Narendra Modi is therefore just a Gujarat political phenomenon

A person representing an entire state as its elected political head is somehow less than a person representing a lok sabha constituency?

  3. Right or Wrong ? says:

Reason – The argument is not whether Narendra Modi is a larger or lesser political leader than Rajiv Gandhi – but the fact remains that even if he has the potential to rise in the National political scene, his own party and the RSS will ensure he does not !

  4. KK says:

Rahul G has a busy schedule what with his ‘baba-gaadi’ tours lined up to UN, Harayana , and China (coming in at a deferred stage) leaving him a little too lees time on his hands for Gujarat.
In Gujarat, one hopes he doesn’t make comments like “If a member of the G family were motoring the Sabarmati train it would never have caught fire and hence there would be no riots :)

On a serious note, RoW, if you are banking on Keshubhai Patel, i think his ‘exit in a hurry’ will have him singing this
‘oh oh , Narayan Narayan hari hari ….
why did i do so much hurry hurry ! :)

  5. Right or Wrong ? says:

KK – Narendra Modi is your mascot because the only State where BJP has some confidence of winning the polls is Gujarat.

In practically every other State, BJP is losing ground or is getting booted out by its coalition partner !

  6. Niraj Patel says:

what will say about Uttarakhand and Punjab? Goa is still with congress with blessings of speaker and governor. Congress got routed in MCD, UP.
Aur Gujarat mein Rahulji ko maat bhejo!! career hatam ho jayega!!

  7. Oldtimer says:

    >>Narendra Modi is your mascot

    Comrade Righto Wrongo/Chingo Chango:

Narendra Modi is a MY mascot. Here is why: he is delivering Gujarat the best administration the state has seen in several decades. He has taken the state on a path of unexceptional economic growth. He has successfully created a brand Gujarat that is attracting FDI like a magnet. His administration has won several international awards for its development-oriented governance. Despite Congress’s persistent efforts at provoking people, he has kept the state free of terrorist activities. He has challenged political correctness, and despite Congress media constantly snapping at his heals to give him negative publicity, he pressed on with his work and with his firmly held views.

Being a Congress party worker, you will not understand why the afore-mentioned reasons should endear a politician to anyone. “What the heck. Is Modi even distantly related to Sonia Gandhi or Ottavio Quattrochi?” you will ask no doubt in disgust. To your congress mindset, it will remain a mystery how anyone unconnected with the Congress party can be a laudable person.

I remain yours with hope, however, that someday wisdom will dawn on you, and then you’ll be able to tell between Right and Wrong.

  8. Rajeev says:

I think Indians are taking undue advantage of Democracy. Mafias are at work in India, main ones being, Political, Police and Media.

    What you think man?

  9. Jyotindra says:

Gujarat will probably go to polls in mid-December ‘07. Narendra Modi is challenged by Keshubhai Patel, Suresh Mehta, both BJP former CMs, and BJP members. Suresh Mehta is on record that NM will not secure more than 67 seats in the coming polls.
If Rahul Gandhi has the power to turn this dissidents’ challenege to NM and BJP, to his Congress party’s advantage, then he will ride high on the National Scene. Otherwise, he is going to meet his Waterloo in Gujarat.

NM might be defeated no doubt but he has in him the guts to anticipate all these happenings and manoeuvre out of the situation. The dissidents main arguments against NM is that a state of emergency is prevailing in Gujarat, that NM is a dictator, etc.
People of Gujarat are enjoying these tirades against the man whom they love for his integrity, ability and will to take Gujarat forward. Gujarat has a golden opportunity to put all things in proper political perspective and give the entire nation a new hope and confidence to face the future.
People have seen that PM Mr. Singh is de jure PM, but the de facto PM is SG. With the entry of RG, there will be further erosion in the authority of PM. It is quite on the cards.

  10. KK says:

RoW, your analysis, or running-commentary as Yossarin described, is always upto the mark. You always find hidden meanings in the posts. Pray, how did you miss what i wanted to say?

  11. Niraj Patel says:

Sorry!! *Career chalu hone se pehle hi khatam ho jayega!!

  12. Right or Wrong ? says:

    Guys,

I can empathaise with your adverse reactions against Rahul Gandhi ! This is a manifestation of hopelessness – which often leads to extreme rections like this…

Don’t lose heart so soon ! Try to influence you party to take the right steps and consolidate its position, so that it can fight.

  13. yossarin says:

RoW – naah we want more of it,
from bankruptcy of accomplishment to cosmetic surgery its all good entertainment

    bring it on man !

  14. Murali says:

Right or wrong, know your facts, rahul gandhi cannot win in even a single constituency. Narendra Modis the chief minister for the 2nd time in India’s most prosperous state. Rahul gandhi has no vision and plays soft communalism and is more interested in his colombian girl friend than in the country’s poor. Narendra Modi might ditch 13% of the country population for larger good which is fine with me because these things have always happened in history. For sure he will improve india than the rest. And those 13% did not care for the rest when they ruled india. Why on earth should we care for them now. Congress goes behind them because even though they are just 13% of the population, they form 30% of the electorate, which is sadly not the case in gujarat. If entire India votes like gujarat, i am sure u congress supporters would leave the minority in the bin. And we know about congress politics, everyone is sticking up with sonia and her stupid games because the party has no future otherwise. everyone was willing to get out 5 years back.
Dude, just count the number if states congress rules excluding those small pieces in the north east.

  15. Gujjuman says:

    @Right or Wrong ?
Being manifestation of hopelessness is better than putting hopes on hopeless.

And yes, we will defend Right to center approach to things.

  16. Pooja Shah says:

    hallo!

I’ve been reading your posts since awhile and I’m so very glad that there’s atleast someone who speaks sense and holds right of centre views in this utterly woolly headed country of ours!

  17. Jyotindra says:

With an eye on polls, Rahul turns Gujjubhai – CNNIBN
    Some interesting excerpts:
According to a report in the Mumbai-based DNA newspaper, the first of these grand plans is speaking fluent Gujarati while on the campaign trail, so as to address the voters in their own language.

Narendra Modi calls himself the representative of all things Gujarati, and has used Sonia Gandhi’s Italian origins to make slurs on the Gandhi family — “Sonia Gandhi is a Jersey cow. Even shopkeepers are not ready to employ her as a clerk. Rahul Gandhi is a hybrid calf, and I will not even employ him as my driver,” Modi had said during the UP elections.

Rahul’s crash course in Gujarati-speaking will not just help woo voters, but will also be an apt answer to all the times Modi has raised the ‘Italian’ arguement.

It is believed that One of Sonia Gandhi’s closest advisors, Ahmed Patel, is believed to be the brain behind the move to project Rahul Gandhi as the Congress’ star campaigner.

The party is also planning a strategy to project young Gandhi as one with family roots in the land of Sardar Patel. Rahul’s grandfather Feroze Gandhi hailed from the state and spoke fluent Gujarati.

‘grandson’. How lucky Gujarat is, indeed!

  18. Gaurav says:

    Yossarian,

Is Bro RoW hired for comic relief ??

  19. Gujarat puttar says:

Gujarat ki Bahu came with accomplishment and that’s
why she was accepted. Similarly, she was kicked out
in 1974, remember emergency and Nav Nirman. Since then, Congress does not hold ground. It won election in 1980 by polarising state on KHAM theory-
    (Kshatriya-Harijan-Adivasi-and Muslim).

What happend in 10 years congress got uprooted completley from Gujarat. Now its coming back with son of father of KHAM theory–Bharat Solanki, son of Madhavsinh Solanki (Former foreign Minister of Rajiv Gandhi/Narasi Rao era) who was forced to resign?
    Does any one recall why?

Congress batallion in Gujarat is corrupted. People know that and so do these dissidents. Kesubhai had to loose the power because of Shankarsinh Vaghela and
Suresh Mehta. Now see who are joining hands.
Gordhan Zaphadia and Somabhai Ganda(Ganda means crazy in Gujrarati), both less educated and corrupt, could not get their pie undre NM.

Can any one question NM’s integrity? or his ability?
Not even Manmohan Singh or current Gujarat Governer(who was appointed by congress) Both of them have to say nothing but praise about NM.

Let’s see verdict in December. Gujarat is famous for making the history. Gujarat has taken lead in freedom fight, political movement (Nav Nirman and emergency). Now social, economical revolution going on.

Guys, worry about Lallu, Mulayam, Mayavati, Karunanidhi or leftist. Compare progress of UP, Bihar, Bengal, Orissa, MP, Maharastra(minus Bombay and Pune),Karnataka (minus Bannglore), Tamilnadu (minus Chennai)with Gujarat.

Gujarat made white revolution with Amul, Green revolution with agriculture, Narmada Project stands tall against all odds. All this done by Gujarat’s own sons- Sardar Patel, Chiman Patel, now Narendra Modi. Gujarat ki bahu put obstacles after obstacles,
tried to gor rid of Chiman Patel in 1974, she got uprooted. She put every obstacle’ on Narmada Project, Gujarat came with its own financing Narmada bond, just as they did with Amul dairy.

Gujarat is land of Gandhi and Sardar and will give birth to its own son. NM, son of Gujarat will shine and there will be another son but will not get fool agian by so called artificial son.

    Gujara puttar

  20. Bobi Sarkar says:

Rahul Gandhi is entirely a different kind of person. It will be foolish to compare Rahul or Rajiv with Narendra Modi.

However, Modi is not a hero. If BJP thinks so, BJP has to suffer. One can not live long just depending on communalism and devide & rule policy. One day he has to go, sooner the better.

  21. Nirmal Kumar says:

I agree with Bobi. Please don’t compare a hero with an evil.

Can anybody tell me if there was any kind of incidence in any other part of the world like putting a sword in a Mother’s womb to take out a baby and then torching the baby with mother? This was done by Modi’s rioters during 2001-2002. In fact this Modi himself is a BUSTARD who praised those rioters for doing so.

Does not matter if you are Hindu or Muslim or Christian. Remember all of us had to come out of a Mother’s womb andthen get to grow up, how can one politician support such barbarism???? Are these guys supposed to be CM?

  22. Basudev says:

Yes, I do agree with Bobi and Nirmal. Hey, people of Gujarat, please please do not vote for such a cruel and abnormal politician, doesn’t matter who will be the CM, but please kick Modi out definitely.

  23. gujarati says:

guys, how much u bark does not matter. NM is going to win hands down. u guys can just see godhra. go to gujarat and see the development. u will be amazed. Look at infrastructure, education system, villages, farmers etc. and then go and piss in u r pants to figure out why its not happening in u r state.

  24. Sami says:

Hello gujrati brother, what’s the value of the infrasturture and the developments, while you don’t have any peace? can you yourself peacefully stay there? NM is for you guys (if you support him…is that right?), what about ourselves, should you leave this place?

And don’t put your legs into two boats, you guys will try to capture the state for yourselves and then lots of you, your kins and relatives will immigrate to west or go to other countries to settle and make money!!!! so this is your hinduism….kill all others, make money at home and abroad and enjoy with muslim / chirstian blood and flesh????.

We know one great Hindu….Swami Vivekanandji…did he train and motivate you to fuck around like this?…..probably not.

  25. Aryan says:

    sami,

‘what’s the value of the infrasturture and the developments, while you don’t have any peace?’

There have been no riots in gujurat since 2002.

‘And don’t put your legs into two boats, you guys will try to capture the state for yourselves and then lots of you, your kins and relatives will immigrate to west’

Didnt know you HAD to stop caring about India if you went abroad, besides there are plenty of indian muslim immigrants in arabia, I suppose we should disown them ?

‘kill all others, make money at home and abroad and enjoy with muslim / chirstian blood and flesh????.’

by any measure you can come up with, hindus have been persecuted for a 1000 years now. Hindus had to pay jaziya ‘hindu tax’. I dont know which madrassa you were educated in, but anywhere else, this is accepted as a fact.

  26. Sami says:

    Hey Aryan,

“There have been no riots in gujurat since 2002″.

We lost our two distant relatives in the year 2002, not 2001. Go to relevant newspaper, magazines and websites……….you will get the details datewise, mothwise and yearwise.

“Didnt know you HAD to stop caring about India if you went abroad, besides there are plenty of indian muslim immigrants in arabia, I suppose we should disown them ?”

My point was about peace, prosperity in Gujarat….didn’t all of us including yourselves leave the place at least considering that reason as one of all the big reasons? nobody told to stop caring for India……..anyway how much did you care about India? a lot…….

“by any measure you can come up with, hindus have been persecuted for a 1000 years now. Hindus had to pay jaziya ‘hindu tax’. I dont know which madrassa you were educated in, but anywhere else, this is accepted as a fact”.

My brother, Gujarat heinous crimes, gruesome intentional killing of innocent poor people are also daylight FACTS…….while Godhra incidence and it’s source has n’t been proved yet!!!!

My MADRASSA WAS PROBABLY BETTER THAN YOUR SO CALLED HIGH SCHOOL.

  27. Aryan says:

‘while Godhra incidence and it’s source has n’t been proved yet!!!!’

So let me get this, according to you the train burning by a muslim mob was an ‘accident’ ?

are you willing to apply the same logic to the burnt muslim victims of naroda patiya ?

do u see how enraging that logic is ?

that’s definitely madrassa logic for you. you must have been to a really good madrassa.

and my statement, there have been no riots since 2002, means, there have been no riots AFTER 2002. I’m not sure what the argument is. 2002 riots were terrible, and its a sad loss of innocent, poor lives, hindus or muslims, I agree.

  28. Gujarati says:

    @Sami

Please talk some sense. You don’t see any value in development and infrastructure? You see no peace n gujarat in last 5 years? Please go and compare the data against any other indian state and then come and talk.

    >> NM is for you guys (if you support him…is that right?), what about ourselves, should you leave this place?

See this IS the BIGGEST problems with minorities, They never consider themselves as a part of the mainstream and India. For them its always YOU GUYS and WE GUYS. Such pathetic thinking.

    >> We lost our two distant relatives in the year 2002, not 2001. Go to relevant newspaper, magazines and websites……….you will get the details datewise, mothwise and yearwise.

You understood it the hard way. Did you ever give a damn about those innocents who are killed by terrorist attacks elsewhere in India? And please no one nor an Hindu, nor a muslim, nor a christian, nor a sikh NO ONE has ever given me a reason why most terrorists in the world are muslims? I need to know this even before I can support or oppose any religious bias against a particular community.

    >> We know one great Hindu….Swami Vivekanandji…did he train and motivate you to fuck around like this?…..probably not.

We know a few great muslims; Dr. A P J Abdul kalam, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Maulana Azad etc. Did they teach you guys to blow up innocent people?

Today an ex-moderate hindu, like me, is in such a situation because of people in your community who’s thought process is so impaired. I had a co-student in my Engg. school who is a muslim from Mumbai and according to him, these are his exact words, “Dawood ne Mumbai mai bomb phodke bahut accha kiya. Ab hum sab muslims safe hogaye”

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OUT FROM THIS? You guys NEVER, you guys DON’t and you guys WOULD NEVER consider yourselves as a mainstream Indian and you expect others to treat you as one.

  29. Gujarati says:

Not just this ONE but FEW similar incidents

    PLUS

The fact that most terrorists in the world are Muslims

    PLUS

The fact that religion comes before the country for them. Eg. the “vande mataram” incident where muslim organizations claimed that they cannot bow to anyone other than Allah, not even their motherland.

    PLUS

The fact that whenever there is injustice meted to the muslim community there are many hindu organizations or hindus who speak up for their cause but there are no muslim organizations who speak up for the hindu cause whenever their is injustice meted out to hindus.

    PLUS

The fact that even though the temple donations go towards haj subsidies to fellow muslims in the country, there are attacks by muslims on various hindu religious procession e.g. past incidents in ahmedabad.

The list goes on and on

Which are the reasons why moderate hindus are moving towards right-centric thinking more and more by the number every day.

  30. Basudev says:

    Hey Gujrati,

I stay in Gujarat too, I am also Hindu by birth, by blood and by enerything. It seems to me you are a great supporter of NM, are you also another hardcore BJP / RSS activist?

If you can say NM is going to win, then Sami didn’t do any mistake taking muslim’s side. Don’t forget we moderate hindus also suffered for him……heavily……..shame on you…….you probably are not aware or didn’t face that………

  31. Sami says:

    Gujrati,

When you mentioned “because of people in your community”, you are still putting some ghee in the fire, inflicting the communal sentiments…..

How do you say that you are mainstream Indian, better you say that you are mainstream hindu, who never desired to put off the fire in our own country….!!??

And don’t talk about militants / terrorists…..our issue was Gujarat….right? even if you want to talk on that, let me tell you there will be always some tit for tat…every action has a reaction……universal truth……you know that.

You said “The fact that most terrorists in the world are Muslims” ….now-a-days terrorist organizations are there in every part of the world…..first look around our country only…..LTTE, ALFA, SALFA, KHALISTAN and lot more to name….so how can you claim so? again putting ghee in the fire!!???………………….I am not surprised, NM trained you 101%….wah NM wah….

  32. Sami says:

EDITOR – FOUL LANGUAGE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED

  33. Aryan says:

    Sami,

hey buddy,do you know that Godhra incidence was basically dueto some electrical fault as per the reports so far……..

what reports ? the ones running around in your head ?
its called psychosis, there is medication for that sort of a thing, schizophrenia is not untreatable.

  34. Sami says:

EDITOR: FOUL LANGUAGE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED IF YOU CANT ARTICULATE YOUR OPINION WITHOUT RESORTING TO ABUSES YOU BETTER GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND GET AN EDUCATION

  35. Ravindra says:

Gujarati – Comments no 28 and 29 – Excellent points

Basudev – Comment no 30 – I wish you had answered Gujarati’s specific points. I notice that you people, whenever you are not able to counter the point-to-point, you immediately attack the person as a “BJP/ RSS activist”. That branding according to you guys, becomes a sufficient point to dismiss all future arguments made by that person, however relevant and convincing they may be!

I can still understand the insecurities that Sami, as a Muslim, may feel due to the rise of NM. After all, the pampering they get from parties like Congress is under threat! But I just fail, simply cannot understand the logic, of the “moderate” Hindus as to why they are not happy with the strengthening of what they perceive as “pro-Hindu” parties like the BJP! What is their problem – what do they have to lose if BJP wins – what do they gain if BJP loses?

  36. gujarati says:

    @Sami @Basudev

Everyone can see the truth behind your mask.

IF YOU GUYS DO NOT LIKE SOMETHING then the person talking is either an RSS/BJP cadre or a hindu fundamentalist.

And I said, MOST terrorist groups and not all not all, are muslims. Please, u give out 4-5 names and don’t list those 500-5000 terrorist organizations operating in our neighboring country.

    >> And don’t talk about militants / terrorists…..our issue was Gujarat….right?

U still don’t get the point do u. You tell development and infrastructure is nothing without PEACE. OK when I spoke about terrorism and militants who oppose peace and had attacked gujarat, you say don’t talk about terrorism. PLEASE CLEAR UP THINGS IN YOU MIND FIRST.

Basudev, I am talking as an indian and has raised some point about some things going on in the country whatever the religion or community it involves does not matter. If these things would have been done by a hindu or a sikh or a christian I would have said the same thing. SO THERE IS NO NEED TO READ OUT YOU BIRTH CERTIFICATE ALOUD. Thats is exactly the reason why I despise people who carried out the attach on innocent people in godhra and elsewhere. Even the congress who carried out the attacks on Sikhs. But you guys are not raising valid points but DIRECTLY GIVING A VERDICT AGAINST A PERSON, read modi, please spare this job to the supreme cort.

  37. Bibek says:

DEAR EDITOR: I am following these comments for last few days, people seemed to be quite angry with the things happened or happening there. However, I noticed that you edited or erased language of one person, but some irrelevant comments raising the communal sentiments are still existing there, so requesting you to edit and erase those too.

Your topic was Rahul Gandhi vs. Modi, and that’s completely lost.

  38. Mihir says:

To all who want to treat NM as a pariah :-

well first things , i m NOT gonna support any violence of the 2001 riots . Ppl of boh relegions were killed in them & thats terrible . BUT dont u think there are reasons sas to why one CANNOT blame NM for the riots , here are some of them

    1. inspite of the vociferous anti-nm campaign by the media /activists , they havent been able to produce a shred of evidence against Him. The mch touted “mobile phone transcripts ” havent been much promising
    2. The congress govt has een at the centre since last 3 years & have always made their hatred for NM clear , yet they havent taken ANY action against him .Tell me , do you think the congress which is so well known for its vendatta politics , would have spared NM if they had concretet evidence against him?
    3. None of the commisions , courts so far have blamed him even in a word
    4. We have so many leaders like laloo, mulayam , etcc etc who have cases pending aganist them [multi million $ scams to rape ,murder & what not ] , BUT they are innocent as havent been proved guilty by SC . Still we treat them normally , allow them to become ministers , invite them into IIMs to share their VALUABLE ACHEIVEMENTS . Then y not apply the same yardstick to NM & give him atleast a BENEFIT OF DOUBT until we get the first peice of evidence/charge admissible in the court of law ???

He may have attracted FDI and may be the darling of Indian industry honchos because he offers investment opportunities, but please remember that India’s beauty lies in pillars like tolerance, acceptance and education.
A 4% growth rate instead of 7% is preferable and at least we will be secular.

Narendra Modi and his breed are hawks and they are dangerous.

Really? Being elected 3 times in a row is not democracy?
    Rahul Gandhi is a wimp!
He happens to be around because of Mummy and Daddy.
His debating skills/ knowledge is juvenile.
Subramaniam Swamy has mentioned about him being detained in the US whilst travelling on an Italian passport. Nobody would have given him the time of day if it hadn’t been for mummy.
    THERE IS NO COMPARISON!
