Mahatma Gandhi’s tragic assassination on the fateful January 30 1948 had sparked indignant and stunned reactions across the world but with his razor-sharp wit the Irish playwright and Nobel laureate George Bernard Shaw had captured the real mood . ‘The assassination of Gandhi in all its gory details shows how dangerous it is to be too good’ Shaw had observed in his cryptic reaction. There is also an age old adage : ‘it is good to be great but it is greater to be good’. But is it really so? There is a fundamental contradiction in the idea-goodness and greatness do not always go together and, much as greatness may be bereft of any element of goodness, goodness is no guarantee for greatness. It is all a matter of perception and highly relative in connotation.
Leaving aside the hair-splitting arguments over esoteric ideas, what are we to make out of the sad spectacle in the national politics of presidency?. Since a choice of the next occupant of the Raisina hills had become imminent the country has been witness to a bizarre drama with leading protagonists singing in different tunes and making conflicting postures . ‘Shivraj Patil is Sonia Gandhi’s first choice’ a newspaper headline had blared out as early as in the first week of May. The reaction it evoked was not comforting for a host of reasons. Shivraj has already proved himself as arguably the worst performer in the sensitive union home ministry, he has failed on almost all fronts but he enjoys committed backing and support of all-important Madam. ‘He has to nod so frequently and so heavily in approval whenever he is in the gracious and exalted presence of Madam Gandhi that he is all set to contract spondylitis soon ‘ reported a leading national daily , quoting as usual a highly placed source in the Congress ‘on condition of anonymity’. Shivraj also performed a ‘Yagna’ (sacrifice) in his Delhi home to propitiate malevolent supernatural influences so that his journey to Raisina hill and the pages of history became smooth . But all his initiatives ended in smoke as Madam thought otherwise.
Speculation ruled the roost as Pranab Mookherjee’s name was pitchforked into prominence as the choice of the UPA allies for occupancy of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Puerile subnationalism was at its height as the Calcutta-based dailies harped on the tune : first Bengali likely to hold the highest position in the country. Public memory is notoriously short but how people conveniently forgot or wrapped under carpet the same Pranab Mookherjee’s extremely dubious record as a major player in Indira Gandhi’s repressive regime , specially during the emergency days , shady record as finance minister and shameless promotion of Dhirubhai Ambani and his industrial empire-in lieu of suitable rewards , needless to say-will haunt many . Secularist Arjun Singh’s pangs of ambition had never really been articulated save by a few hangers-on but this fell flat on Madam’s reportedly avowed anathema to the man who had narrowly escaped gubernatorial exile by springing the reservation surprise on an unsuspecting nation . ‘Rashtrapati Bhawan can not be a rehabilitation centre for the physically handicapped and senile’-was how one of wily Arjun’s inner-party enemies was reported to have commented. Arjun by all accounts can not stir up even from his chair without leaning on a walking stick.
Having considered all the pros and cons ,therefore, Madam zeroed in on Pratibha Patil to pip the allies to the post by hijacking the gender sensitivity and compassion plank . A lady of hardly any consequence , Pratibha Patil may pose a problem of upkeep to the bureaucracy in Raisina hill on account of her considerably numerous family, as one newspaper photograph showed, but she is sure to be an eminently servile and accreditated custodian of 10 Janpath’s safest base camp in Rashtrapati Bhawan. Gyani Zail Singh had once thrown protocol to the winds and come forward to open the door of Indira Gandhi’s car after the lady had called at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, presumably to flaunt his undying loyalty to the dynasty . One should not be amazed at similar spectacles in future .
An apt and tragic epitaph on the president’s election this year is inescapable : a nation that fail to recognise and honour its noble sons is destined to languish in mediocrity. The solemn farce surrounding the election of next president has however spawned a striking reality to the fore : the majority of Indians-more than fifty three percent , according to one opinion poll-root for a richly deserved second term for Dr A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.
Since Dr Rajendra Prasad no central government has allowed a second term for a president but the majority of Indians wanted an exception this time. A man who personifies all that is great and noble in Indian civilization, culture and values Dr Kalam is far above petty politicking and power-brokery and it is good that he has refused to stoop to the level of contesting against a feather-weight though it is tempting to believe that his presence in the fray would have caused considerable jitters and a possible upset. The political posturing over the president’s election has however brought to the fore the fundamental disconnect in contemporary India between popular perception and political decision-making- never a healthy trend in a democratic polity. The lone consolation is that saintly Dr Kalam who in his all-sacrificing life-style and brilliant contribution to the development of science and technology in India reminds one of ancient sage Baudhayan will still be as creative as ever in his days of retirement. His ‘Wings of Fire’ will certainly propel him to produce yet another masterpiece with a few pages devoted to his days in the confines of Rashtrapati Bhawan. He is simply too good and too great to be of choice to the country’s political class.

A GRAVE BREACH OF TRUST
A vast majority of citizens are watching helplessly at the spectacle of the election to the highest office of our Nation. We have a situation where an individual allegedly having a large number of charges against her, as being reported in the media, has been offered the support of the majority of the Electoral College by the UPA and several other political parties/groups. In this context an honest citizen of this country is left wondering about several issues of great importance for the long range political health of this Nation. Some of these are:
1. If even ONE of the alleged charges mentioned in the media is later found to be CORRECT, would it not be a lasting shame and stigma on this country and the Guardians of the Constitution of the Nation?
2. If the individual concerned is elected and installed as the President of India, can any impartial investigation in the veracity of the charges be carried out? And in all fairness even to her, every one of these allegations must be thoroughly investigated by an impartial body of unquestionable integrity to absolve her from these charges. But in the present situation the mere thought of the First Citizen of India being asked to appear in a court of law to be grilled leaves one totally dismayed. We already are witness to the denial of permission to prosecute a Minister in the Union Cabinet, and the Chief Minister of a State. The blanket support of BSP to any Presidential Candidate of UPA leaves one asking questions? We must have an individual as the President who would make each one of us to feel really proud of him/her.
3. The Prime Minister of India on Oath to safeguard the Constitution of the Nation has failed to do so while becoming a party to the selection of this particular candidate of UPA. As an expert on finance and a person of high personal integrity he is expected by us not to be a party to such a selection, and repeated attempts by him to absolve her of these charges through the media leaves us very dismayed. Or is it his way to convey a message to the large number of farmers on the verge of suicide due to pressure from banks for repayment of loans that they are in good company of a would be President of this Nation! Incidentally, these charges have not been trumped up after the selection of this candidate, but have been unearthed by the media and concerned individuals. By not exercising his constitutional duty to safeguard the Constitution on the day when the nomination papers of this candidate were filed when several of the charges were already in the public domain, and by not insisting on the withdrawal of her candidature on the last day of withdrawal when many more charges appeared in the media, the Prime Minister has utterly failed in his constitutional duty.
4. All Members of the Union Cabinet, All Members of Parliament, and the Leaders of all Parties, supporting this particular candidate have also failed to exercise their judgment and by being guided by ulterior motives are also in serious violation of the Oath that they have taken while being sworn to their respective offices. Drunk with the power of a brute majority of numbers on their side, this set of individuals have deprived this Nation of the services of a person of the stature of our present President for another term.
5. The Chairperson of the UPA is possibly the most culpable of all these Honorable individuals, allegedly keeping the choice of this particular individual to herself or to a very small coterie around her, and reportedly placing loyalty to The Family as an overriding criterion above all else.
6. We must appeal to the President of India, and the Supreme Court to take immediate steps to save the honour of this Nation. Every one who has even an iota of pride in being an Indian must raise his/her voice before it is too late. Or is it already too late?
7. The requirement of fifty proposers and an equal number of seconders from the Electoral College favors the ruling coterie, and is designed to prevent the nomination of eminent persons by non-political individuals for this office, and is in violation of the spirit of Fundamental Principle of Equality guaranteed by the Constitution. This provision is against the basic approach of the framers of our Constitution who by providing for a secret ballot for this election intended to make this office beyond petty party politicking to which it has been reduced making a mockery of our democratic credentials.
8. Thus the sanctity of the highest office of the country is being violated very blatantly, and we the citizens are being reduced to mere spectators by the people who rule the country on our behalf.
We must exercise our democratic right by making a stand, and convey a message to the politicians that we the people of India, in whose name and on whose behalf they profess to rule us, can not be taken for a ride on a matter of such vital importance for the Nation. They would not be allowed to play one group against another to perpetuate their whimsical ideas on us. Let us stand united and raise one voice for India.

2. Even though numbers are supposedly stacked up against Bhairo Singh Shekhawat, he has the courage to stand and fight it out which at least gives an alternative to electorate. All members of Rajya Shabha have publically admitted that he was impartial in his dealings and showed high moral values. I believe at one stage BJP was in arms against him for taking their side. In my opinion and may be in opinion of most Indians at this stage in Indian history the first choice for the President is His Excellency Kalam (that is the way to address him since he is our President). But with no consensus arrived for his candidancy the best next choice is Shri Bhairo Singh ji Shekhawat.
4. Does any one call General Carriappa or Field Marshall Maneckshaw or Maj Gen Jagat Singh or all the other stalwarts who were in the Indian Army and the civil service as traitors – NO – they were in the Indian Army during British Rule and the positive side is that since all those were in the Army or other services at that time and people like Acharya Kriplani, Morarji Desai were in Civil/ other services at that time that we had a semblance of some order/ system after independence. If all Indians had taken part in quit India the way it is being said now then would we have had trained people. Or should every one have stopped working? By this defination even a farmer helped the British and should be considered as traitor since even growing grain helps in continuation of the Raj.
5. There were trains runing at that time, Hospitals being run to treat the sick, electricity being generated, schools being run and that too English being taught (Its thanks to that now Indians almost control IT industry). So let us not judge others based on wrong perceptions which was necesary for continuation of and building India that we see now.
6. What is wrong is a section of society accepting Sonia as thier Leader. Congress supposedly faught for freedom and now Congress has to look up to a foreigner to lead them. Why because she is married to an Indian. By that defination how could we call all British foreiners since many of them were born and brought up here. I happen to meet some even now and some of them did consider India as their country. We nned to be maore mature.
7. Ignorance is bliss – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose had taken side of Japanese, who we know have been the most cruel and high nosed race. Read Chinese History and then you would know about the atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese. Rape was the last offence. They used to practice sword skills by chopping off heads of Chinese. I sudder with the thought of what would have happened if they had come to India. Indians by nature are very trusting and accommodative.
8. What is happening now probably happened in the initial days of British Raj in India. There were some people like some of our present politicians who two the line of Sonia Gandhi. Its power that these politicians are loooking for and do not care for India or the Indian public.
9. I would like to hammer at BJpP and NDA also for speaking against the President Kalam for having voiced his opinion about present day politicians. I think he was doing his duty by speaking about shortage of good Leadership and public looking up to judiciary. Once politicians get elected they think they are above law and have no responsibilty to the public.
10. One way to show solidarity and pubic opinion against Pratibha Patil is may be by switching off all house lights for 5 to 10 minutes at say 8 PM on 18th July and same time stopping all vehicles for just 5 minutes where ever the vehicle may be. Best is to park vehicle on the side at that time so as not to break the law, because we must obey the law and not break it. WE have to learn that an damage to public property is our property since Government is us and not to look at it some other body.

We had some so called “rubber stamp” Presidents in the past but none of them faced such serious allegations against him.
If all allegations against Pratibha Patil are true then her election to higest constitutional post would be a matter of disgrace for 1 billion indians.

Smt Pratibha Patil, I know perfectly and closely, is perfectly suitable candidate for the position of President Of India from all angles and requirements of the position. It is unfortunate that she is being criticised due to political rivilary amongst various political partises. I submit humbly that this is not the forun to settle the political scores and very earnestltly request all political parties and politicians to refrain from indulging in mud slinging and personal allegations against Presidential Candidates. I feel very disapponting when i saw the true picture of indial democracy.The persons who are criminals and involved in corruption at large scale will be the head of indian republic.It,s the same for whole the nation and for congress party who becomes the great patriotic party,Basiclly it is the cluster of feudalists and opportunists persons which has nothing to do with nation.
People dont know always truth. In the past when Dr Manmohan Singh’s name was proposed for the priministership and people of India thought that it was a sacrifice by Smt Sonia Gandhi, refusing the post of Prime Minister. But in fact Smt Gandhi was very much interested in became the Prime Minister of India.
The truth is that her candidature was refused by the president Dr Kalam because the three Army Chiefs refused to work under a candidate of foriegn origin. Most of the people dont know the truth. So in this election Smt Sonia Gandhi will choose a candidate who in future support her priministership. In future if Smt Pratibha Patil became president of India, it means that the way is clear for Smt Sonia Gandhi to become Prime Minister of India. This will bring bad luck for India. Time will tell the truth. After 10-20 years people will realise the truth.
This is the high time to combat corruption. It will be regrettable if such a controversial person become our president. That will be an insult to her predecessors.

When Shrimati Pratibha Patil, with the type of background that she is bringing with her, is elected President of the country, it would be inviting more trouble than what the country already has. While the numbers of elective arithmetic are in her favour, every person in the country and every elector of the electoral college needs to ask more questions about the candidate before voting her for the highest position as constitutional head of the country. More than anything else, it would be very appropriate for the candidate herself to do some introspection and withdraw herself from the contest and let any other person, a more suitable person, be elected.

I think it is not encouraging for Indian Politics to debate on the issue of President election.
Opponents are unneccesarily opposing Smt Patil. Indian constitution has been designed as such that the President acts merely as a rubber stamp. Emergency under 352, 356 & 360 are the only spaces for him to act spontaniously, that too with prior report of the P.M. & the Governor of the state respectively.
Secondly, Cooperative movement in India has experienced plenty of ups & downs in Maharashtra. The bank headed by Smt Patil is just a past of it. How an indivisual can be considered solely responsible for iniligible debts.
What is left with the left, when they could support Mrs Patil’s candidature as our next President.In the recent past both inside and out side the Parliament Left seems to be the only Political corruption/ scam free out-fit .The support to Mrs Patil must be taken by a few who are at the helmn of the party affairs for which entire Left block is going to pay heavy price infuture.

There is another angle. The president is also the supreme commander of the armed forces.In effect she or he is not only the first citizen but also the first soldier of the country.
